I would also add Newcastle to that list. They seem pretty determined to gradually fight their way back into the big time.

Also, I hope the Coventry Bears go well, it's a sizable city, so who knows where they might be in 10-15 years?
Those clubs are in League One :)

Indeed. Was just adding a few to the list, places where RL already exists, not necessarily in Championship. And I believe Thunder will get promoted this season.

The legendary Nathan Hindmarsh once made 75 tackles in one match (v Melbourne in 2007).

I believe this is the most in either competition.

Not true. He made 69, according to the NRL. The 75 quoted comes from journalist hype I think. Michael Luck holds the record for most tackles in a game (it went to extra time though). Shaun Fensom holds the record for most in 80 minutes with 75.

That's NRL. Not sure about SL.

Great idea for Doncaster and Sheffield to stage double-headers. But does anyone know how they calculate their crowds? Because these were the two stated figures:

Doncaster vs Leigh: 1,602
Sheffield vs Batley: 1,358

I can only assume 1,602 was the total for the day and that Sheffield were free to make up any number below that that they wanted.

Can someone in the UK answer this. Why are super league clubs persisting with playing on friday nights when they are not on TV, there were 3 matches tonight. My understanding is they can request whatever day they want to play and then sky moves particular fixtures each round for TV before the season starts. Do they do it to sell more corporate seats on a friday night or another reason? To have 4 matches on what are working days coming out of winter is pure madness imo.

Clearly playing on a friday (and thursday) night in february/march is not popular for fans at the gate as we can see from this rounds attendances
Huddersfield V cas 5,257
Wire v leeds 10,075
Widnes v saints 7,772 (the exception, well above their average)
Wigan v hull fc 11,718

Thursday night probably shaved 2-3k from the huddersfield fixture, but the wire and wigan matches had garbage crowds for the respective matchups and well down on what we have seen for these games in the past.

Some clubs like St Helens, Wigan and Leeds always play home matches on Friday nights. I don't know why. A lot of other fixtures this year have also been moved to Fridays to allow to teams the chance to recover for the next week's Thursday night TV games.

They make more money through corporate avenues on a Friday night. That's the reason I understand anyway.

Workington 12-14 Sheffield, 682
Batley 19-26 Bradford, 2,223
Featherstone 6-40 Leigh, 2,695
Halifax 26-13 Dewsbury, 1,734
Hunslet 32-12 Doncaster, 498
Whitehaven 18-16 London, 689

Week's average: 1,420

Some close games this year. Another loss for London who are now floundering in 8th place.

That is the reason as far as I am aware as well.

Attendances in SL have been poor this season. No doubt they'll improve a bit when the weather improves but Thu night rugby on SKY does not help; RL fans simply won't travel anymore during the working week.

Reports that the Batley crowd was understated by at least 1,000.

does not help more than half the round is being played on a friday and thursday some weeks. The match of the round should be on friday night on sky and the rest of the games on a saturday/sunday.

It baffles me why the previously highest rating and attended games are being put on a thursday night by sky, up against the likes of darts which has a larger national audience, its just asking for faipure in the stands and ratings

Yes excellent night

Hulls crowd is very pleasing, if only they could find something close to consistent success they could average 14-15k

Cas should be pushing 10K for matches against neighbouring teams.
Not a bad figure against Salford (who wouldn't have had many traveling fans).

Good crowd at Leeds. 2nd highest figure for this fixture in SL and the best since 2008. Just a shame both teams didn't play that well.

16,000 sold for Hull derby
20,000 sold for Wigan/St Helens...

Let's hope for a sellout at Wigan and over 20k in Hull!

Thursday night crowds

Hull FC v HKR 20,507
Widnes v wire 7,768
Wakey v catalans 3,015

Yet more lunatic scheduling from the clubs. Fair enough one game for TV but Wakefield and widnes have chosen thursday night despite the games not being televised and have lost thousands at the gate compared to playing on Good friday. Wakefields crowds have been disgraceful the past 2 games, considering what bradford and leigh are drawing the championship this mob deserve to be relegated and are certainly playing their way into it.

Wigan v saints is sold out so should be around the 25k mark. Cas v leeds i am expecting 10k or so and huddersfield v salford 7k max

With another game on Monday clubs often play thursday. It's understandable.

Huddersfield v Salford will be lucky to get 5k.
