GOOD FRIDAY CLASH FLARES UP
As Canterbury fans were at their worst on Good Friday, crowds across the other side of the globe were also making headlines for all the wrong reasons during the Widnes-Warrington clash.
Referee Robert Hicks led both sides from the field after a flare was thrown from the crowd onto the pitch, with play only resuming after ground stewards had removed it. Vikings boss Denis Betts took a dim view of the halt in play.
“Have we gone absolutely stark raving mad that we can’t just grab it and throw it in the stand back at them?” Betts said, after his Widnes side produced a comprehensive 30-10 win.
“It was health and safety gone mad in one sense, in another sense, you can’t do those kind of things.
“But are we trying to prove a point to the fans or do we take the smart option and just get it off the field?”
While reports suggest the flare was thrown from a section of the crowd made up of predominantly visiting Warrington fans, it’s not the first time Widnes have been in trouble for poor crowd behaviour.
The club was hit with a ₤20,000 fine (₤10,000 suspended) last year after a pitch invasion in which disturbing images emerged of Vikings fans kicking the Castleford Tigers mascot in the head.
