Sydney relocations

Lets say you dropped the sharks back to NSW cup, they then become a feeder club as every club in both nsw and qld cups have a NRL club to feed.

The Sharkies stay alive and then we introduce lets say Brisbane two and Perth.

Perth will open up a new market, bring in juniors, sponsors, fans and over time a whole new TV revenue.
Brisbane will bring in another game in Brisbane each week, double crowds, have a massive Derby unlike anything Sydney can seem to produce lately grow crowds for other teams like Cows and titans by introducing more Queensland derbies, release the stronghold and waiting list of sponsors, grow juniors and shore up the Brisbane market.

Brisbane needs 3 teams. Wellington or auckland two need a team. The same effect will happen in NZ as will happen in Brisbane, it will create a whole new market for the code, and timeslots and close the market gap of only playing once a fortnight in our heartlands.

I am no businessman but that is bread and butter expansion right their, even a blind freddie on a deserted island could see the dollars and growth outside Sydney.

The AFL have already made the move to two teams in every city, and are collaring the market as the NRL dithers, dallies and acts like a amateur as ussual.
A team in Perth, shore up our heartlands and collar the market.
It is simple math.
I mean fair dinkum, the Sharkies cant even find a sponsor, these new expansion clubs have got billionaire companies lined up waiting, waiting for someone, anyone with half a nuccklehead peanut for a brain to grow and reap the rewards.

You still havent explained why the sharks need to go back to NSW cup. The rest of your post makes sense, but why do we need to get rid of a Sydney team?

Yeah I can come up with one.

Because even if we do lose fans in Sydney by cutting their clubs (which isn't necessarily true if we do it properly) we know that we can more then replace them in other areas!

We know for a fact that the Sydney market is over crowded so remove some of those teams and place two new teams in Perth and Brisbane.

Yeah a we'll probably lose a generation or two of the cut teams fans, but we'll more then cover our losses with new fans from Brisbane and Perth and if we play our cards right we'll still get future generations of the areas that's teams were cut.

If we move the Sharks for example and replace them with a new Brisbane team, it's not unrealistic to say that we are losing 15k of active fans and replacing them with 25-30k new ones. That's not a losing 15k fans, that's gaining 10-15k fans!

So average attendance numbers in fact wouldn't go down but up, and ratings in fact wouldn't go down but up!

Removing two clubs from Sydney would also have added benefits for the other clubs in Sydney (more sponsorship money to go around, more room for clubs to expand to, etc) which would make them more sustainable in the long term.

Put basically in the long term we'd be trading 9 weak clubs in Sydney for a strong club each in Brisbane and Perth and 7 clubs in Sydney that are stronger then they were before.

Why not expand and keep the Sydney clubs as well? That way you are not losing any fans at all.

And where do you get the number of active fans from? What makes some one an active fan over an inactive fan?

Read the article I've just posted with Grant saying there is unlikely to be any expansion due to the state of current clubs. Most of those in a state are the Sydney clubs. That's why the game cannot grow with the situation as it is.

the same clubs that are largely responsible for the massive TV deal we have

they are already bankrolling the storm at $5 million more pa than anyone else, why should more of their money go to loss making teams when they are the ones who earned that money.

good luck to them to get every cent they can get.

i dont think the people on here arguing for sydney clubs to relocated are being honest / realistic about how succesful the non sydney clubs are.

and how much they add to the TV deal.

newcastle are the only non sydney club which is at potential. warriors get a pass.

the rest are all one team towns and their crowds are frankly disgraceful.

and if you are talking about wanting to expand look at the basket case that it the gold coast titans, thats what you want to add to the NRL?

edit : am in actually in favour of expansion

The TV ratings are great but they need to put bums on seats.

after 4 rounds the NRL crowd average was 16,413

4 clubs got higher than that average the rest were below

3 of those 4 clubs were in sydney.

looking at the bottom of the table, 4 out of the bottom 6 are all non sydney sides.

sydney sides are currently averaging : 16,533

so sydney sides on the whole are slightly above the crowd average

Can anyone come up with a logical reason why you would want to reduce the number of sydney clubs when they average more than the non sydney clubs, and generate the bulk of TV ratings?

seriously are you people interested in seeing the game growing or just jealous that league is so succesful in sydney and want to take it back a peg?

Successful? After more than 100 years, crowds of 16k in a city of 5 million?

Exactly, im in favour of expansion; just not in the cost of a Sydney club.
We need to get out of this thinking that all clubs should be super rich and wealthy. All sports have both poor and rich clubs; it makes things interesting.

The game of rugby league earned that money.

end of the day guys you are watching the NSWRL competition.

thats what the NRL is. the NSWRL built the most succesful league competition on the planet and it was the one that expanded the game.

the heart of the game is in sydney, its been like that since 1908 and it will never change.

if you dont like sydney follow another sport.

if the sydney teams wanted to break away they would be fine and the rest of the comp would be stuffed.

So 6 Sydney clubs are below avg, the majority? Good we cleared that up.

Last season SIX of the seven lowest attended clubs were Sydney clubs!

It's not 1984, the world has moved on, it's time the NRL did as well.

It is clear from what Grant keeps saying that they will not expand and grow the game whilst there are so many problem clubs, the obvious place to reduce that is in the city with nine teams. Otherwise I wouldn't care and would just let the slow inevitable decline lead to death for those clubs that are never going to be able keep up as the others grow.

the NRL just got 1.2 billion for its media rights deals.

the game just banked $50 million dollars, a figure its never had before

The NRL pretty much got the same media rights deal as AFL

this is despite :

1. not having teams in perth or adelaide like AFL
2. AFL expanding having 2 teams in qld and nsw
3. AFL having an extra game than NRL.

How the hell did we do it?

You always got the feeling with that deal, channel nine felt it had ripped off the code for long enough, and AFL ,Union and soccer as well as Cricket were swamping the game in Sydney, as you said is where the game has grown to, hardly any further, been the whipping boy since 1905.

As every other code has expanded and thrived, the NRL now finds itself even fighting for it's own heartland.
Penrith were only just brought back from their deathbed, the Tigers the same.

This code really offered the fans not a lot to cheer about. From outside looking in, the game offered little, even the bush was dying.

We have 4 short years to get it right, move forward or die you bitch, die hard league and let the long suffering be free.

Because the current setup is not sustainable in the long term, we're spending too much money on clubs for too little return.

To fix that we need to remove some of the pressure on the clubs that are struggleing and the best way to do that is to remove their competition.

Sydney has 9 RL clubs, 2 AFL clubs, 2 A-league clubs, 1 Super Rugby club and heaps and heaps of other forms of entertainment, the smaller RL clubs can't handle all that competition so the best move is for us to remove some of that competition so the other clubs have the best opportunity to strive.

And where do you get the number of active fans from? What makes some one an active fan over an inactive fan?

My numbers were rough estimates.

An active fan is someone that actively engages with the club, i.e. they're members, buy the clubs products, watch as many games as possible, go to games, esc.

Where a casual fan is some that identifies as a fan of the club, but doesn't actively support them.

the same clubs that are largely responsible for the massive TV deal we have

they are already bankrolling the storm at $5 million more pa than anyone else, why should more of their money go to loss making teams when they are the ones who earned that money.

Wow you've got that all knotted up.

So because there has always been a majority of Sydney clubs there always should be, even if it would be more profitable to have less clubs in Sydney and more in other cities.

That doesn't make any sense at all.

i dont think the people on here arguing for sydney clubs to relocated are being honest / realistic about how succesful the non sydney clubs are.

Well actually clubs like the Broncos, Storm, Cowboys and yes even the Raiders add more to the TV deal then your average Sydney club as they add access to different TV markets then just Sydney.

The TV deal would be worth jack shit if the broadcasters couldn't get exposure for advertisers during a popular program in the Brisbane, regional Queensland, Melbourne, southern NSW and ACT and Auckland markets.

If we were selling the rights to a comp with teams only based in Sydney our rights would be worth less then the A-leagues, our program would still be more popular, but the lack of direct exposure to markets outside of Sydney would kill our TV rights value.

How can there be an average for the Raiders this season when we've only had one home game?

Which BTW was against the Titans whom bring a whole three away supporters to Canberra games.

end of the day guys you are watching the NSWRL competition.

thats what the NRL is. the NSWRL built the most succesful league competition on the planet and it was the one that expanded the game.

Firstly the NRL is not the NSWRL anymore, not matter how much you wish it was.

Secondly sure WE built the most successful RL competition in the world, that was almost killed in under five years, by a rushed and badly planned rival!

the heart of the game is in sydney, its been like that since 1908 and it will never change.

if you dont like sydney follow another sport.

if the sydney teams wanted to break away they would be fine and the rest of the comp would be stuffed.

The heart of the game is not in Sydney and it hasn't been since the early eighties.

If the rest of the competition wanted to break away it's Sydney that would be in trouble.

Imagine if a new competition came along and took the Broncos, Storm, Knights, Raiders, Cowboys, Titans, Warriors and two Sydney clubs with them, maybe the Rabbitohs who behind all the smoke and mirrors are struggling to make ends meat and the always ambitious Bulldogs. That's 9 clubs, maybe more if things went down differently.

Then add to that Brisbane 2, Perth, Wellington and the second coming of the North Sydney Bears (giving us one team each in the north, west and south east of Sydney) and you've got a league with very strong foundations and most of the superstar players already on contract, maybe more with some sneaky brown paper bags here and there.

That'd leave what's left of the NRL with 7 clubs, maybe they rush a Hunter Mariners style club in to fill the comp out to 8, and nearly all are based in Sydney.

The only things that the NRL would have that we'd want is SOO, the Kangaroos, a handful of players and a few clubs.

Tell me again who'd be "stuffed".
