What should the Roosters do with their name?

I don't mind the Bondi Breakers idea, but maybe they should look at that a little further down the track. One name change at a time to ease the die-hards into it.

i dont think that was the reason...what a load of sh*te

the colours match the french colours and as such, the c**k was chosen as the emblem

It's believed it's one or the other I suppose.

And what a crappy call by Pretner(sp), the Breakers is a horrible idea.

Hate the Roosters, but they're here to stay I guess. But as a name, 'Sydney Roosters' (or its preceeding 'Sydney City Roosters') is stupid.

To those who came up with either East Sydney or Eastern Sydney - you guys are on the ball. Totally agree.

To those trying to compare 'Sydney Roosters' with 'New York Yankees'...what the hell have you been smoking? The Yankees are the only NY team in their comp (as are the Mets in their comp). How many Sydney teams in the NRL???

To those decrying 'Eastern Suburbs' as not geographically specific...again, what have you been smoking (and can I have some)? Wests Tigers...St George Illawarra Dragons (where is St George again?), as far as I'm aware, the Bulldogs are still the Bulldogs - they're just including the 'CB' on the new insignia as a nod to their history (correct me if I'm wrong). The poster who mentioned 'Eastern Suburbs' reminding him of the footy cards chewy, spot on. While the future is important, you can't brush your history.

Bondi Roosters? Pffft! What was that guy smoking?!?

Waverley/Bronte are definately Roosters territory. I live in Coogee and it definately feels like Rabbitohs territory, there are as many of those bunnies stickers on the back of cars here as there are in Maroubra.

As for Paddington, that's Waratahville

Coogee Rabitohs territory my arse. Its Eastern Suburbs through and through. Dont go getting any misconceptions just because they stole that territory baxk in the 60's

What ever happened to Bernie Gurr. Back in 1995, every interview he did, he would say:
“We are Sydney City, we are Sydney City’s Team”.

I don't like the sound of Bondi Breakers. I like emblems to be based on living things - I hate it when a sporting team has a mascot based on a weather pattern (Storm) or emotion (Fury) or some other such thing.

Breakers - what will the team mascot be? Instead of some guy dressed up in a furry costume doing pratfalls I guess we'll just see a bucket of water sitting near the touchline...

The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs name is indeed confirmed as being the name of the Bulldogs NRL club.

I'm sure there are better articles about this, but a quick Google search brought this one up first for me.

As for the Eastern Suburbs / Sydney City / Sydney / Bondi / whatever Roosters name, I was gonna vote for Eastern Suburbs or East Sydney or something like that, but the argument in that article for the 'Bondi' name actually swayed me. My vote is for Bondi.

Whenever I think of the tigers i think of....THE TIGERS

wests or whatever doesnt even enter my mind, I still dont know or care after they changed from balmain so there goes your theory.

As many have stated there a 2 chances to gain recognition here. Through the name and the mascot/logo e.t.c

Most teams are commonly reffered to as the tigers, knights, roosters e.t.c as its east to remember and creates an instant image in the recievers head as to what team a person is talking about, the name is usually the backup when geting confused between codes.

The use of bondi, like stated gives the chooks a whole nother dimension of advertising and recognition ability.

For anyone who even has the slightest idea about advertising "not" suggesting bondi over something suburbs has lost it.

In my personal opinion the word 'suburb' shouldnt even be associated with the game anymore. It sounds small, old an is reffered to an 'ouset' of a city.
Were not playing footy in our backyards anymore!
Its time for you oldies to kneel over and accept that the game is progressing and changing.
We are seeing the introduction of more teams, interstate/overseas teams with gradual expansion.

Bonda has grown as a major tourist and general Australia wide hotspot and would fir well with the flaps.

Most people arent as thick as you and know that a team from Sydney called Eastern Suburbs represents the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney.

Coogee is most certainly Rabbitohs territory, I'm a neutral so I have no particular care either way - but you come down to the Coogee Bay Hotel and I guarantee you there will be a lot more people watching a bunnies game than a Roosters game.

Yeah - I lived around the area for quite a while. Coogee always felt like a Rabbitohs suburb to me too.

Sydney Roosters name change

Thursday, 3 December 2009
Despite recent speculation regarding the Sydney Roosters a name change is not on our agenda.
The Sydney Roosters brand is strong and incorporates the long and proud history of this great Club. The Sydney name is known across the world and is a shaping factor in the Club’s identity.
As with any name change to a strong brand, a long and thorough process would be undertaken and consultation with the Club’s stakeholders, including Members and Sponsors, would be a part of that process.
The Club is looking forward to participating in the 2010 season with a New Attitude, and enjoying a New Beginning, as the Sydney Roosters

People talk about how 'Bondi' is such a famous name (which it is), but the ironic thing is that the name 'Sydney' is even more famous around the world still!

I favour the Roosters to stick to the name 'Sydney' as their territory actually covers the Sydney CBD.

Also, as a Newtown Jets fan, because the Jets are the Roosters feeder team the name 'Sydney' can incorporate the Newtown/Marrickville area which adjoins the Sydney CBD directly to the south-west direction and the Roosters could lay claim to the Jets former turf through their 'Sydney' name and their association with Newtown. Anyone from Newtown/Marrickville would immediately distance themselves from 'Eastern Suburbs' or 'Bondi'.

Also interestingly, I have read Sean Fagan's book 'The Rugby Rebellion' which came out in 2005 (I think). In chapter 4, there is a club-by-club summary of the formation of the foundation district Rugby Union clubs, and on page 57 it has quoted the 'Sydney Morning Herald' and 'The Referee' newspapers from March and May 1900, and this is an excerpt of what they had to say about the formation of Eastern Suburbs:

"...The name 'Eastern Suburbs' was once well-known in althletics and Cricket fields. About the most famous of the now defunct amateur athletics clubs was the old Eastern Suburbs club. Also in existence at that time was the old Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club. But since those days, until a month or so back, the name Eastern Suburbs had dropped out of the world of sport, and indeed, out of all others. It is now revived in football, but strictly it is a misnomer, for the area embraces a substantial portion of the city. That is however a mere detail..."

So even back then in 1900, it was acknowledged that the Eastern Suburbs name maybe wasn't quite right. And so it seems after all these years the 'Sydney Roosters' name is the correct one after all.

I know Sean is a regular poster on these forums. Perhaps Sean can elaborate and add to this further?

St. George is made up of roughly the Kogarah, Rockdale, and Hustville local government areas. Sure, there is no actual suburb or place called 'St. George' on a map because it's the name of a region/district. But everything is called "St. George whatever" in the area for e.g. the main hospital is called St. George Hospital, so in my opinion I think St. George is geographic-specific.

Same as Illawarra - there's no actual suburb or place called Illawarra on a map, but it's a region stretching from Helensburgh down to the Far South Coast.
