Today is the last time I will watch a Knights game this year. Sure it'll be on the big screen when I'm at work next Friday night, but I don't think I'll really bother to watch. I'll just let the sound of Cowboys fans cheering give me some indication of how the match is going.
Honestly, watching Newcastle play these past few weeks is more painful than watching David Brent dig himself deeper and deeper into a hole on 'The Office' or watch John Hewson explain the GST on birthday cake during the 1993 election, and I just can't take the frustration anymore.
To those of you thinking about going to the game- spend your money more wisely. You turn up to watch the boys play week in, week out whether or not the weather is perfect, and they continue to dish out garbage like today- it's about time you voted with your feet for this weekend and let them know that there comes a time when enough is enough. With the money you save going to the game, do something like what I'm doing and pool your money with a mate, put it on the Cowboys to win and then buy a case of your favorite booze with the winnings.
For those of you going to the game irrespective, I hope you've realised that watching Newcastle play is like a porno- it starts differently, but you know how its' going to end. For those of you who don't mind a spoiler, here's how this weekend will go:
1) Knights defend well for first set of 6
2) Concede a penalty
3) Concede another penalty
4) Opposition scores and converts
5) Knights lose ball on 2nd tackle
6) Concede penalty
7) Opposition scores again. Younger players drift off and start thinking about where they are going to get pissed that night. Older players start thinking about the glory days when Mini Bus would slap them on the back after a loss and tell them they'd win it next weekend because Joey was coming back from injury to do all the work while the rest of them could wander around the field and get paid 200K a year for it.
To any of the current Knights squad reading this- you are a disgrace. You could learn a thing or two from a team like Canberra who can stick together and win the unexpected despite being wooden spoon favorites year after year. You should all watch some tapes of Knights games from the early days. Although those teams were actually LOWER in overall talent than what you're playing with, they had buckets more heart and effort and everything else you have been lacking. They knew they wouldn't win every game, but they sure as hell kept on trying UNTIL THE VERY END OF THE GAME. Even listening to the commentary from the day, they talk of how much heart and guts are in those Newcastle sides, despite a lack of big name players that would later arrive at the club. You lot are a disgrace to those men who bled and broke bones for the red and blue, no matter what the scoreboard read.
To my fellow Knights fans- I will return next year, wearing my new Centennary of League Knights jersey. In the meantime, here's hoping (I'm sure on all our behalfs) that the team we love learns something in the off-season about passion and guts and never saying die until the final siren goes, instead of blaming it all on Brian Smith.
