We're not on the same page merkin. The quote reminds me of how politicians lie and take opposing views, not for the good of the country - just for the good of their party or own political aspirations. Both sides are guilty. Shits me.

I'm not going to get involved in the protectionism debate. However I do think that Abbott has dropped the ball on this one. Losing Ford, Holden and Toyota in the same period of time will hit VIc and SA hard. They should have thought it through and continued a program of assistance so to staggered closures over the next decade. Then workers could be re-trained and not just thrown onto the dole queue in their 1,000s.

Back to the lying merkins, Hockey is tight lipped over the pre-election promise of $16m to Cadbury and $10m to a Vic paper mill. How is it different, people asked? It just is he said.

What the punters want is truth and transparency from both sides of politics.

Pretty sure I encapsulated the point in the second and third lines.

I don't care if pollies lie. What they do is more important than what they say.

It goes beyond lying. It's actions for short term political gain rather than long term benefit for the country. Policy is drafted based on agenda. Very tired of the "you say it's black and I'll say it's white" lies of the two party system.

Climate change, NBN, Mining Super Profit Taxes etc are being rolled back not because they are necessarily bad policy, but because the opposition felt the need to take an opposing view.

When there is a change of guard in one or two elections time (history says that it will happen) then labor will roll back and act like children just as this mob are. Idiots.

Gronk,the need to take an opposing view is only the argument of the Chardonnay lefties who live east of Victoria Road.The majority of people who live outside that rule of thumb and don't vote "green labour nonsense" , see that those policies were pretty dumb and werevthere to favour a green view of the world, and don't get me started on the leaders of the labour in NSW and Canberra, they have all the answers when they did nothing and knew nothing when in power

At least Abbott is doing what he went to the election with, but then again I don't like Midnight Oil much either :)

Most people are too stupid to vote for someone who tells the truth.

Most politicians are smart enough not to tell the truth.

<start rant>

Abbotts speech today "Closing the Gap" stated that he listened to Paul Keating's landmark Redfern speech in 1992 and "it was my job to disagree with everything he said".

What's wrong with a partisan view on some matters when you're in opposition FFS ?

Tony Abbott, in my opinion, was the absolute worst opposition leader I have ever observed. His absolute primary school-level tactics brought the Australian Parliament to a new low. The lowest point I've ever witnessed.
I think it would be a great idea if the party who is not in power was no longer called 'The Opposition'. I believe it's fair enough for the second party to have as one of its main goals that they should keep the government honest (otherwise we have little more than a dictatorship).
But to disagree with everything a government proposes, totally defeats the purpose. Wouldn't it be lovely if we had a 'second party' that was content to remain the second party and try to work with the government for the good of the nation? I wonder why that can't happen?
