I have to say, I've watched the preceding three seasons with mild interest, with flashes of 'that episode wasn't bad' here and there, but the current season is f**king excellent. Have they got better writers or is the story just more interesting at this stage of the show?

Last series and this one are taken from book 3, easily the best book in the series and the reason why the last two series have been the best.

What is it with best selling fantasy writing? I finally finished Lord of the Rings last year and it was excruciating. Endless descriptions of terrain, everything happening at a snail's pace, and wooden characters spouting stilted dialogue. I understand that people spoke differently in the olden days, but Middle Earth isn't Iron Age Europe, and even if it was, merkins spoke colloquially 3000 years ago.

A lot of the time it seems the 'story' is just an excuse to show off the amazing imaginary place the writer thought up. Like a travel documentary for nerds.
