I think the most logical opportunity for South Australia would be to go into a dual - city representation with the Sharks.

Southern Sharks

8 games - Cronulla
4 - 5 games - Adelaide

Sharks desperately need to broaden their appeal and breadth.

Sharks is a flexible and attractive brand with relevance to the Adelaide narrative.

By creating an agreement with other Sydney teams they can retain games in Sydney, both in Cronulla and in wider Sydney whilst broaden their casual supporter base by a million.

Even if they averaged ten thousand fans in Adelaide, that would be ten thousand new fans with additional merchandise and corporate potential.

Given potential for investment from the South Australian government as well there is huge potential with limited risk.

To motivate such a move the NRL should provide an annual grant top up for ten years with a binding contract with the South Australian government, including forms of sponsorship.

Been done.

We had an 3 year agreement with the SA government in 2009 to take games here in the wake of that Four Corners hitjob and the Tony Zappia scandal and it lasted a year after our fans complained of losing out on home games so the club walked away from the deal and Canterbury temporarily stepped in to fill the deal.

The Roosters also had that deal to play a game against Melbourne at Adelaide Oval (I went to both games as I had already moved here by then) and they too decided not to renew that deal.

Like I said in this thread there will not be a current existing club in the competition that will relocate anywhere.

If we are to get a team here again it'll either be a reborn Adelaide Rams or an old club like Newtown that merges with an Adelaide consortium (like Norths did with Perth).

Adelaide Oval is now far too big now being twice the size it was during the Rams' days and Coopers Stadium is far too small capacity wise and the pitch is too small as it's primary tenant is football.

If you ever have watched Super League games their in-goals are far too small.

The big issue with upgrading Coopers is it is shoehorned in by Manton & Holden Streets and one can't move the road plus there's a heritage listed old church building behind the Southern Grandstand that Adelaide United currently uses as a storeroom.

Very highly doubt it.

Our current premier is all over the big events stuff (ie. AFL Gather Round, Adelaide 500 V8 car racing, LIV Golf etc.) but unless Adelaide United start packing out Coopers on a weekly basis I highly doubt we'll be getting a new rectangular stadium.

Plus they only just did a refurb of Coopers by extending the Eastern Grandstand for the recent Womens football World Cup.

Even if they did the same with the northern stand and southern stand the capacity would only be the same as some current clubs in Sydney.

Perth getting in may be the catalyst for us moving towards getting a team as there's the FOMO factor at play.

The big issue we have here that Perth doesn't is we don't have a very large NSW/Qld interstate expat (I am one obviously) community and we don't have the large English & Kiwi community that Perth has here.

We're still a city full of pensioners and public servants (the former still goes on the John Hopoate scandal when referring to our game).

Well, at the moment Souths are taking a game each year to Perth - and the deal has just been renewed for 2025 & 2026 - seemingly in anticipation of the Perth Bears debut in 2027.

So there's an opportunity there after 2026 to pivot from one big AFL city to another big AFL city, bring a game each season to Adelaide & help stoke the interest in NRL there just as they have over the last few years in Perth - running up to a team of their own in a future expansion phase.

Souths should be sounding-out the powers-that-be in South Australia and seeing if they're keen to get the ball rolling on funding/infrastructure for games from 2027 onwards, for a seamless transition after their Perth contract ends.
