Stevie Wonder. Had 4-5 brilliant albums in a row in the 70s, where he wrote the songs, sang, arranged, played most of the instruments.

One of the most talented musicians ever. Light years ahead of Prince, Phil Collins and some others mentioned here.

Prince did do the same, y'know?

But I agree with Stevie-boy being in the top five.

But Stevie wrote good songs.

Personally I much prefer Prince's songs to Stevie's. Bit I guess that's because I grew up with Prince, whereas Stevie's stuff was mostly before my time (the only hit I remember him releasing was "(I just called to say) I Love You", while Prince releleased a whole string of hits during the 80s).

Yeah, I think it is a generational thing Spacie. Being old, I grew up in the 70s, and basically think there has been very little good music (or movies) produced since that golden age.

Brian May - Guitar, Piano, Vocals, songwriting, he is a class above most others and is far from being over rated.

What about Mark Knopfler?

Didn't we write, play, produce and sing on his albums.

Well not exactly sing...

I prefer to agree with the majority of answers, try as I might I can't make it a competition. Though my personal preference does lie with Phil Collins and Grohl, and Frank Zappa to own them all. You just have to read about him to understand, without ever listening to one of his songs; an insanely smart and aware person with an inhuman dedication to music.
Honourable mention to Michael Jackson if liberty is taken with 'musician' to include 'performer'.

You know just recently a mate of mine gave me 2 opinions:

1 - That Dave Grohl is one off the most successful musicians of our time. Why, I asked? and he pointed out he was in Nirvana, arguably the biggest band of the early to mid nineties and then swapped from drums to everything on CD and singing and playing guitar live to bring to Foo Fighters to one of the most prominent rock bands of today.

Hardly a small feat. I had never though of it like that.

His second opinion was:

That Coldplay are the new U2. A band that constantly brings out good songs and he believes they will grow to the size and status of U2. (personally ive never been a 'listen from start to finish' of coldplay or U2 cd's but do love a lot of their songs).

I just thought of that when I noticed those two popped up in a few opinions above.

Grohl? Coldplay? Oh dear ...

1) Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth)
2) Sting
3) Devin Townsend
4) Steve Vai
5) Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon)
