I dissagree. The Bears v Manly local derby is a significant cultural events that has now been replaced by another codes local derby version. You have underestimated the loss of a longstanding local rival for Manly. This matters and this one of the main reasons that rugby league is on a downward slide in northern Sydney. You don't see it that way? I do. It's not justhe coincidence . Things like the elimitation of a club that's been around since 1908 does have an effect eventually. The decline of rugby league in this area can be partly attributed to the loss of a top flight club. I'm sticking with this logic. It does make sense.

The club isn't elimated though, they play in a second teir RL comp, but sure... these fans won't accept that but they're happy to support third grade RU... makes perfect sense

Lol. I recognise the facitiosness. (but that's part the course here) However the lack of rugby league presence in such schooling would have hampered rugby league growth immensely. No frIends in high places does count! Rugby league hadn't got the influence or connections enjoyed by union . They elite private school shunning of the code has a big part to do with this in my opinion.

Didn't Federal labour just show support for an NRL team in PNG? I mean you can't get friends in much higher places than that.

Maybe he applied for one of these schools and they turned him down and he's made it his personal mission to whinge about them on the internet.

No but I have encountered the NAZI like attitude from union blokes that deride rugby league. These union blokes/players were all from elite private schools.

Its does if understand the psyche of Aussie sports fans. They don't settle for 2nd best especially after being wrongly shafted in the first place (superleague 'peace' deal)

Who cares - their boring as bat sh!t sport is all but dead in this country. All they have to cling onto is a less than 1% of schools and a couple of 10k crowds in the Shute Shield. RL is king in Australia

But they'll settle for third best (Shute Shield)? Remember the Shute Shield was once the top teir of club Rugby in Australia and the whole comp (not just one club) got relegated. Why does this same logic not apply in RU?

All of PNG and elsewhere would be good!. Unfortunately bigger issues such as the lack of presence of rugby league in elite private schools should be addressed as well! You guys might not think it matters but others do.

I think RU has more issues with their fading presence on the Australian sporting landscape at the moment.

Because rugby league captured the imagination of the vast majority of the public! Very different scenarios. Rugby league is essentially popular culture spawned by being genuinely popular and attractive enough to attract many people. Union has been propagated by the elite private school system and its resultant contacts/friends in high places. Rugby league earnt and won the popular support within Australia on its own merits. Not propagated by any biased school system as with union. It won over support .Very different scenarios.

Not necessarily so! They have a booming local competition scene and unchallenged support in the wealthiest schools of Australia. Along with rugby league making poor scheduling decisions like not hosting the touring Lions team next year, rugby union is able to capitalise on upcoming events more so than rugby league which has virtually abandoned international relevance for the coming year. I'd suggest , despite being a crap product, union would secretly be content with where they are at in Australia. Remembering it is an undeserving sports product propagated by influential organisations and connected people.

Why is it a bigger issue? It’s a tiny proportion of the population.

The psyche of Australian sports fans is that the vast majority are glory hunters.

The continued insistence that Norths v Manly is some massive important derby is hilarious. The last three clashes in the top flight between the pair yielded fairly substandard crowds (15k) and while they attracted good support mid-90s, generally the crowds for the fixture haven't been flash.

They do like their place in the sun. I agree. And I'm one of them. If the Roosters were shafted I'd be devastated and disgusted. That's the way Aussies roll Pommy.

Dissagree. The local derby crowds have been healthy. It's moreso the local cultural relevance that is being missed. The chatter and banter at work or the pub. Things like that are gone. Localism is far more potent and all encompassing than some people think. Especially with 1.2million people in northern Sydney!

No. Your assertion that the Manly v Bears derby is hilarious as far as importance is concerned is your warped view/opinion. No fact in that! So I DISSAGREE. I believe that longtime rivalry is very important. We dissagree .
