It’s all forced these days, I mean they even attack something like Cobra Kai because it’s lack of diverse characters. Which is funny because the main character is Italian and the legacy character who is treated with absolute respect is Japanese. It’s just a great well written show which respects the laws with a heap of characters from different back grounds and genders. But not enough diversity apparently. No one seemed to care to much about the gender or race of any character back in the day as long as they were well written and added to the story. Now it’s all about their gender and who they f**k.

I like Cobra Kai. Haven’t seen the latest season yet, but will watch it soon.
I haven’t heard anyone say that about that show but it doesn’t surprise me. Some people will take things too far. Happens both ways.

I really should be going to sleep now. It’s f**king late, but I’m enjoying the conversation.
My one year old doesn’t sleep well and is sick right now. I’m expecting her to wake up any time soon and instead of getting any sleep that I can I’m stuck here talking to you guys.

Well we can’t account for everyone. Some people just say stupid shit.
I used to say the same thing about Blade. That movie was awesome.

Those black actors you mentioned are all great, but you have to admit were a pretty small minority. Pam Grier was pretty much only in B-movie exploitation flicks, not exactly a star of big budget Hollywood stuff until Jackie Brown.

So when is diversity in a movie not ‘forced diversity’?
When it doesn't make any sense or goes against established characters and material. There is going to be a black Ariel in the Little Mermaid remake which doesn't make sense as it's Danish folklore written by a Dane. Snow White is now a latina and there was a black Anne Boleyn a couple of years ago. There was also a black King Arthur.

This is peak laziness imo. These companies like Disney and so on are multi billion dollar companies with endless resources to research all cultures and people to all corners of the earth, to come up with stories specifically about them which would be cast perfectly but instead they just crowbar these people into European folklore and pretend that it's always been like that. If I was a black person I would be embarrassed as there are many interesting stories from African folklore that can be told instead.

I remember when Disney made Princess and the frog which was the first black princess and it was acclaimed by everyone because it was an original story without forcing diversity in for the sake of it. They also introduced Moana and Polynesians to great acclaim. This is diversity done right not just race swapping characters for no reason.

Lol keep trying to twist my words. I’ve shown my brother this thread and he is overjoyed at all the straight people being offended for him. He wonders where all you amazing people were in the 90’s when it was hard to do what he did. It’s now cool and hip to be an ally.

Lol. For the 3rd time, I am not twisting your words.
I went to the Mardi Gras 3 times in the 90's in support of friends. It was a celebration back then just like it is now.
It was also an amazing parade and spectacular. It was fantastic.
It was and still is a show of strength and support for the LGBTI community. If your brother is gay, do you support the Mardi Gras to back his choice in life and support him?

I genuinely ask this because this discussion all came about from you stating you don't want LGBTI stuff shoved in your face.
If you know how difficult it was for your brother with his coming out back in the day, surely you would have some empathy for those that still struggle with that?

A Dane may have written the original story, but Disney’s version is not the original story is it.

They’ve changed the story for the cartoon. What’s the problem with changing the colour of this mythical creature’s skin?

The Snow White and King Arthur stories have been told so many times, usually with white people. I see no problem with using a black or Latina actor to portray them and see another version of these (once again) fictional characters. I also thought Denzel Washington was awesome as Macbeth which for some reason no one seemed to have a problem with. Or Morgan Freeman playing Red in Shawshank Redemption (who was a white man with red hair in the book)? Why one and not the other?

Stories are stories. If the colour of a character’s skin does not impact the story at all then can be played by anyone. Of course Black Panther can’t be played by a white person. Being black is crucial to his character. How is Ariel’s skin colour crucial to her character? Or James Bond? Or some random elf in Rings of Power?

It doesn’t matter.

It’s not just me it’s a lot of people, as I’ve stated my brother thinks it’s way over the top as well. The Mardi Gras was great but now it’s been hijacked by activists and SJW’s.

He doesn’t like so does that make him a homophobe as well like Hindy was labeled?? Or his partner and quite a few of his friends. He hasn’t been down for years and he said it’s been commercialised and the not the same. As I keep saying maybe he’s just a cranky old
Merkin same as his friends and I’m mainly going off his opinion.

It has been the case that being homosexual was something to be ashamed of for centuries
And now there's a bunch of other shit we're supposed to be ashamed of. So if we were wrong then why should we believe we're right now? In this brief moment in history?
including being illegal at times in some places.

We have reached a stage when they can finally come out and be proud of who they are (in some places). I see nothing wrong with celebrating that.

It certainly is an achievement, not a personal one but one as a society. I’m sure there will come a time when it will be so normal that it won’t need to be celebrated and just part of everyday life. We haven't reached that point yet.
I suspect you will never reach that point. Victims with this amount of power never let it go. "There is still more work to be done..."

And also like to point out that many do not consider their homosexuality as an "alternative choice". #bornthatway
"Lust is driven by the desire for sexual gratification. The evolutionary basis for this stems from our need to reproduce, a need shared among all living things. Through reproduction, organisms pass on their genes, and thus contribute to the perpetuation of their species."

The great thing is, if we call sexual attraction "love" we never need apply scientific rigor to it. #loveislove

Or that imbecile Jennifer Lawerence telling us all she was the first female lead in an action movie. So glad the awesome Sigourney Weaver set her straight.
This whole "Men hate strong women..." bullshit. No, we hate you lumping us all together and telling us what we hate ffs. Vazquez was the coolest character in Aliens, and Ripley was the star. That's been my favourite action movie for over thirty years ffs, and now I hate strong women? I just hate anyone who uses their platform to demonise an entire gender. Unless it's Bill Burr.

So when is diversity in a movie not ‘forced diversity’?
When it looks natural. In the real world, people tend to gravitate to others who are like them. So this perfect little Hollywood gang where Monica is black, Joey is deaf, Phoebe is Muslim, Ross and Rachel are lesbians and Chandler is in a wheelchair just looks incongruous. Like, where are their real friends ffs?

I met plenty of gays in Sydney in my 20s but lesbians seemed to not exist. Then I finally found them one night when I wandered into a party in Coogee. Nearly everyone there was a lesbian, and the few who weren't didn't seem very close to any of the lesbians. And it made sense. What use did they have for men or straight women?

Later on I joined the army and found the rest of the lesbians. With zero sexual tension, they are fun chicks. Similar to hanging with super hot chicks you know you'll never smash (and they know you know). Or like hanging with your sister (mine are both cool).

Anyway my point is that people like being with 'their people'. Like how backpackers and international students tend to gravitate to their countrymen (or pseudocountrymen, e.g. Aussies/Kiwis or Scandinavians) or bars full of gay men. It makes sense.

Because those guys weren't cast to promote diversity, they were cast because they are f**king awesome. Nobody read f**king Shawshank Redemption so they didn't know the character was race-swapped for the film. And a black Macbeth was just cool, like a black Mercutio. They weren't cast to promote an agenda, it was just a cheeky little twist. It was artistic.

How is Ariel’s skin colour crucial to her character? Or James Bond? Or some random elf in Rings of Power?
I wouldn't have minded if they'd made all the elves black (like Drizzt) but to just have this random black elf there was jarring. Like were his ancestors shipped there by the white elves as slaves or whatever? How about the multiracial village of humans he was helping, or the multiracial harfoots, or the multiracial Numenoreans? Multiracial communities form for actual reasons based on things like slavery and (recent) immigration. But over enough time they intermarry, and they are no longer multiracial. They become a singular 'race' where everyone is physically identifiable as one people.

And this bothered me a lot, because overall I liked Rings of Power, and Arondir (the black elf character) was f**king cool. But the cast resembling a random sample of 21st century Londoners just looked thoughtless, which is not what Tolkien is about.

Who on here is saying that’s fine?? Big difference from people saying they are sick of all this stuff being shoved down their throats and it’s being ok to abuse someone because their sexuality. I’m pretty sure no one on here thinks that’s ok. Hasn’t stopped people on here labeling us all bigots and homophobes.
So what is homophobia? It seems you think it’s a very narrow definition, your definition. In reality you seem to be very vocal with your range of negative attitudes. Coincidentally, wiki says …

Homophobia encompasses a range of negative attitudes and feelings toward homosexuality or people who are identified or perceived as being lesbian, gay or bisexual. It has been defined as contempt, prejudice, aversion, hatred or antipathy.

It's been infested by people like Gronk. Who hate straight white men and anyone who is normal.

Maybe the actual phobia at play here is directed at anyone who wants to be treated as special? LGBTQI who support having parades in their honour can't pretend they also want equality. If you want to be put up on a pedestal expect a backlash. Notice when Spacey got exposed he didn't say "Go easy, I'm a white man!" No, he played the gay card. It's a moral pedestal and merkins love the status.

Similar to how people only started hating 'strong women' when that strength manifested itself as smug arrogance. But merkins hated men like Trump, Sheen, Crowe and Wally Lewis for the same reason. They just didn't have a gender card to play.

And merkins like Gronk allow this shit to go unchecked. Because he gets to signal what an ally he is. Allies are special too.

I never said that anyone was fine with things like that.
Was just saying that it wasn’t so long ago that it was just ‘playground banter’ to say shit like that, but thankfully it is now seen by most as disgusting behaviour. I look back and am horrified at some of the shit I used to say, and I wasn’t even close to what some of my school mates were like.

Having said that, there are some people out there who wish that we could all go back to a time when ‘people could take a joke’ and you could say whatever you wanted. We just had @hindy111 saying that he loved growing up in the 80s…I’m sure he did, because he’s not gay.

Yeah I was also teased for eating salami and being short. I had forgotten those negative things and moved on.

As I said earlier. The neighbours I go and have a beer or dinner with are Gay/Lesbians. None of us talk about or mention it. We just don't care about each others sex lives. I just see them as my neighbours who are friendly to me and not snobs.

Should I wear a rainbow shirt when I visit them so they know I support them?
