The communications minister will hold the power to decide the events that go into a "quota group" of three NRL games and five AFL games that will be shown on free-to-air TV in each round of the football competition.

I don't follow

Am I a tard?

I thought Seven have 4 AFL games a week, where is this 5th one coming from? Seven don't want the 5th one, Fox want it

It might as well be in Swahili.

Let's say Melbourne play St George-Illawarra and Nine broadcast it as a FNF game....it can go to Gem or Go if it isn't on main channel? That's how I'm reading it given Conroy is saying "local" teams must be shown on FTA.

it could but 9 would never put the FNF game on a multichannel.

not in Sydney or Brisbane anyway

As a fan of both codes who talks to people from the biggest AFL hating NRL fans to the biggest NRL hating AFL fans and everyone in between (the normal people), there is one thing that unites everybody. Their hatred for Stephen Conroy.

I cannot fathom how a man with his lack of talent can get such an important ministry.

Bet he finds a way to f**k this up in an epic way.

an excerpt from here http://beta.afr.com/p/business/marketing_media/live_tv_bill_causes_concern_tJCKqaCNwkA4cCw3jSxZwL

Channels Seven, Nine and Ten have been keen to preserve an extended list of sporting events that are off limits to pay TV to boost their ratings and reduce the cost of, and competition for, sporting rights.

But in what might be a boon to sporting organisations and the pay TV industry, the legislation also reduces the so-called anti-siphoning list of sports that free-to-air broadcasters have to themselves.

The number of broadcast rights that can be contested by the pay TV industry is increased, holding out the prospect of more auctions and higher prices for those rights.

And docbrown, regarding your point about QLD Cup matches being shown to boost the Brisbane metro ratings figure for the 4pm match, if that's the case, I'll be very surprised if the Broncos get any Sunday 2pm matches on Fox in order to avoid a clash between the matches. If the Broncs get any Sunday games, it will have to be the Ch9 match.

That would assume some kind of coordination between the different parties...

Luckily (or unluckily) the Broncos will have a Friday night game almost ever week so it's probably not going to happen.

With 4 QLD teams they could set it up so that the two Brisbane clubs alternated between Fridays & Sundays so that every second or third week there's a Sunday game at Suncorp whilst still maintaining the Brisbane presence (home or away) on a Friday night.

Cowboys home games should be Saturday night with at most 1 home game in the first 5-6 rounds. Cowboys away games typically on a Sunday arvo/night or Friday night if a derby or potential blockbuster.

Titans home games typically Saturday night or Sunday arvo/night. Away games similar except if a derby or blockbuster, then Friday night.

Schedule the draw so two home games in Queensland each week and two away games. Only one game in Brisbane itself a week at most - so most weeks either Brisbane & Townsville or Brisbane & Gold Coast.

A QLD derby match on a Friday night every two to three weeks. A few weeks before the first origin have two QLD derbies in the same round (akin to a QLD selection trial) featuring the new rivalries - Brisbane II v Cowboys, Broncos v Gold Coast. Leave the bigger derby games (Broncos v Cowboys, Broncos v Gold Coast, Broncos v Brisbane II) for the non-origin period.

Play all derby games home and away (12 total per year) with each QLD club having 3 home games that are QLD derbies.

The NRL have insured inflated ratings for this season. The problem being, can the broncos play every Friday night forever?

Inside reports suggest that the networks are bargining an apparent $1b deal, but what's the cost to clubs like Canberra and the Riff? They don't see a great deal of Friday night, but will they ever!!!!!

The NRL must negotiate for all clubs not just the broncos, I fear money being lost on the Tits will also be a factor going forward.

Penrith? We just had a Fri game and despite mostly being trash usually have a decent amount of FTA games.

Mediaweek says Swans/GWS game last night got 82k Sydney, 33k Brisbane, for a total 574k (5 city metro) http://twitter.com/#!/mediaweekaus

So opening game of the year, brand new team, all the hype, and it pulls less than the Eels Penrith game friday that pulled 646k (5 city)..... I know it doesn't include Fox Footy but it also doesn't regionals.....

The NRL need to ensure that there is a Saturday night NRL game on FTA.... This is almost as important as the money. AFL have had Saturday nights to themselves on FTA in Sydney for years.... Now that the AFL is consigned to 7mate in Sydney, NRL on one of the main channels will suffocate the AFL.....

I think 30k of the 60-70k ppl watching swans games are ppl just bored on a Sat night and flicking channels looking for sport..... Take those numbers away from AFL and it will be a weekly embarrassing headline for them......

Incorrect. 574k is Melbourne/Adelaide/Perth combined, so it is 689k for 5 city metro. However, this is still less than the NRL's season opener of 710k, which was only shown in Sydney and Brisbane.

Therefore, to sum it up in a mathemtical equation:

NRL Sydney + Brisbane ratings > AFL Sydney + Brisbane + Melbourne + Adelaide + Perth ratings
