I checked the tv guide and saw that the remaining 3 FTA AFL games for Round 1 - Richmond/Carlton, Hawthorn/Collingwood and Fremantle/Geelong - are all live on 7Mate.

Thankfully I have an older tv in my bedroom that doesn't get the digital channels, so I'll be spared from this rubbish

Incorrect. 574k is Melbourne/Adelaide/Perth combined, so it is 689k for 5 city metro. However, this is still less than the NRL's season opener of 710k, which was only shown in Sydney and Brisbane.

Therefore, to sum it up in a mathemtical equation:

NRL Sydney + Brisbane ratings > AFL Sydney + Brisbane + Melbourne + Adelaide + Perth ratings

My bad, still pretty poor ratings for a comp that pulls most of its numbers from the 5 city metro report.....

Mediaweek says Swans/GWS game last night got 82k Sydney, 33k Brisbane, for a total 574k (5 city metro) http://twitter.com/#!/mediaweekaus

So opening game of the year, brand new team, all the hype, and it pulls less than the Eels Penrith game friday that pulled 646k (5 city)..... I know it doesn't include Fox Footy but it also doesn't regionals.....

The NRL need to ensure that there is a Saturday night NRL game on FTA.... This is almost as important as the money. AFL have had Saturday nights to themselves on FTA in Sydney for years.... Now that the AFL is consigned to 7mate in Sydney, NRL on one of the main channels will suffocate the AFL.....

I think 30k of the 60-70k ppl watching swans games are ppl just bored on a Sat night and flicking channels looking for sport..... Take those numbers away from AFL and it will be a weekly embarrassing headline for them......

To be fair to the AFL the game was also shown on Foxtel where I suggest most of the viewers were.

Thursday night football rated 1.278 million nationally.

I can tell you now that the AFL's opening game on F2A nationally and Subscription TV nationally won't come near to beating that.

By the way Storm is 9 next Friday so we'll get a direct comparison.

That's because ALL FTA AFL games are now on 7mate in QLD and NSW for the next 5years.

All I am saying is that the FTA figures for the game are not a true indication of how many people watched the game on TV. It will be interesting to see the Foxtel numbers.

The figure nationally may not match the Knights v Dragons, but I never said it would. In fact I never even hinted it would.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that's what you were trying to say, it was more just a personal prediction.

You could almost write off the entire 88k ppl that watched on 7mate as being genuinely interested. Would have been tvs in hospital waiting rooms & nursing homes switched over to 7mate by the male nurses.

Fin Review had an interesting article today if someone has access

They said that Nine and Fox may be putting together a joint bid, which would make it harder for Seven and Ten...

My fear is that if this is true, that could lower the offer... Ten&Fox at war with Nine would have created this competitive tension, but it seems Fox think they could save money by bidding with Nine....

I'll move to Canada if Nine get the rights again....

I was one of them. My wife and kids were watching some teenage movie and I moved to the rumpus room TV but there wasn't much choice really. I watched it on and off, mainly to see how their crowd was...which was not that good imo.

I was under the impression that 10&Fox were going to take on Nine. Is this now not the case? If Nine roll over and allow Fox to simulcast everything there is no need for Fox to join forces with Ten.

Maybe not the right thread for it (el d move to relevant locationl if necessary)

But I was on my Xbox yesterday and noticed them advertising a "footy pass" for 20 a month which for the first time lets you get AFL games down through the foxtel on Xbox feature.

My understanding was that they had a similar deal to the NRL in relation to digital rights being owned by Telstra. So is it possible we could see something similar for RL?

Or is this something we would need to negotiate into our digital rights section?
