That's huge. This is as important as the money. We need the exact same thing in Victoria/SA/WA/TAS.

You know what's ironic? If we do keep the status quo in terms of timeslots in the next deal (which isn't unlikely) there will be more live AFL on FTA in NSW and QLD than NRL. Which is simply ridiculous if you think about it.

The NRL has got to get more live footy on FTA and it's got to get games in every city on FTA.

Agreed.

We're fecked. There's no way we will get anywhere near that. And we have club, Origin and Test rights to sell. Still won't get close. But this is what happens when:

a. The NRL is in News and Nine and Telstra's pocket. and
b. You ignore the major area in which RL can supercede AFL, ie international footy.

Both issues come back to a poor administration that is conflicted and doesn't care about the game as a whole.

WTF?

We get more FTA games of boggerball in NSW now than RL, who cares if it's live or delayed.

Could you ever see AFL states having more FTA RL games each week than their code?

No way, they'd burn down the TV stations, so why should we put up with it.

This must be seen as a personal challenge by Gallop and co. Their reputations are on the line now.

Sadly I think league is far too compromised.

It was kind of conspicuous that 7mate is running AFL in QLD and NSW

It leaves them perfectly capable of showing NRL in the heartland and on 7mate everywhere else.

We need to force whoever wins the FTA rights to show multiple live games in NSW/QLD and to live or near live games in the foreign states. And we need Fox to pay much more for less exclusive content.

It's going to be tough but the bar has been raised in terms of what an elite sport in Australia can get and for how much money, it's up to our management to get the same or close to it for our game.

If we want to maximise our deal, we MUST expand in PERTH and BRISBANE. Our next expansion after that needs to be looking at Adelaide and Wellington.

We must improve our national footprint, particularily in the OzTam cities. We can then justify pushing for better national coverage and bigger dollars.

To expand in Gosford is a seriously BAD idea for the future health of the game.

This isn't about "bringing back the Bears" or nostalgia. This is about maintaining market share and survival and prosperity of the game as a whole

Exactly. 7, if they have the budget, could show AFL on its main channel in the other states and Mate in NSW/QLD and vice versa for NRL. They'd absolutely dominate the ratings everywhere.

Id like to know what people think, from what we are currently getting, what do you guys realistically think we can expect and what are the main things we should be going for??

Wonder who has poached him?

Perhaps it's because he got forced into a deal he didn't think was good for the network - either by his own board and/or the AFL. Now he's fufilled his commitment, time to resign in protest and/or jump ship before the bad deal comes back to bite them.

That was a false rumour, see the footnote in the below article:

http://www.afl.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/208/newsid/112560/default.aspx

Footnote: During the hubbub surrounding the announcement of the AFL's new broadcast rights, a story appeared on afl.com.au suggesting that Seven Network's boss David Leckie was to retire following the conclusion of this historic agreement.

This story was incorrect, and afl.com.au apologises for the error.

A billion dollars, 3 FTA live games in every capital city in the country. Every game live on fox.

Leckie is 60 years old and has had some pretty serious health problems in the past. At one point he was in a coma. By the sounds of it he just wants to retire and had it planned for a while.

If we get the same % of the AFL deal as last time, we are looking at $940m. But we were undervalued, so something bigger than this would be expected.

$800m would be the absolute floor for the TV component without any competition between networks and the rights going to 9.

But we know there will be some competition, and the NRL will likely expand, which should see the TV component closer to $900m, plus whatever we get for Internet rights.

I think a realistic expectation for us based on this AFL deal is something greater than $930m. If we get what we are worth, we will be around $1b.
