Timana Tahu ends union nightmare by returning to Parramatta Eels

All this back ending of deals suggests a 2010 or Bust approach. Dangerous if it doesnt come off Big.

At this stage there would be three backended contracts going by reports and one of them ends next year. One of the others is dependent on how many games Tahu plays and the third deal belongs to Hindmarsh.

Doesn't look to scary given the players we have off contract at the end of next year either.

Parramatta CEO Paul Osborne believes Timana Tahu will assume his position as one of rugby league's finest talents when he returns to the code following two 'lost' years in rugby union.
The Eels are on the verge of signing Tahu to a three-year-deal, the dual international set to thrash out a release from the Australian Rugby Union to free him from the final two seasons of his contract.
Osborne, a close friend of Tahu's, has been instrumental in luring his mate back to the 13-a-side game after a frustrating stint in rugby.
The Eels boss says the 29-year-old has kept a close eye on the NRL over the past two years and has a burning desire to dominate in that arena again.
"Timana's a Ferrari. He's certainly a wonderful, wonderful player and it will be terrific for us as a club and for us as a game to have him back," Osborne said on Thursday.
"He loved his time at Parramatta and he obviously hasn't been very happy at rugby."
"Timana's acquisition will be a wonderful bonus for us."
"Should we get him back to Parramatta, he will go back to being one of the best centres in the game."
Osborne defended Tahu against accusations he deliberately misled the media and his employers - the ARU and NSW Waratahs - over his future.
The gifted centre has repeatedly denied he was disillusioned with rugby and wanted to return to league.
"He wasn't coming back to rugby league up until I got the job at Parramatta," said Osborne, who took over as Eels CEO earlier this month.
"All we've talked about is whether he is happy over there (in rugby) and clearly he's not - he wants to come back and play league."
"Quite clearly he could have made a lot more money if he'd stayed in rugby over in places like Japan."
"It wasn't money for Timana. He just wants to be happy in his environment and I'm sure if we get him at Parramatta he will be very happy."

it does if we are going after Thurston as well and Haynes increased money.

And I thought you can only backend existing player contracts not new ones.

You can structure contracts anyway you like. It's common practice in the NRL that a 3 year 900k deal can be done for say 200k first year, 300k the following year, and 400k in the 3rd year. As long as you're under the salary cap for each particular season it's all good.

It can get very messy, that's why in the past few seasons we've signed no-one but lost a stack of players. That was due to back our club signing players to back ended contracts several years ago.

That's the beauty of all this

That on the board we have a formal player agent who knows how to pull strings in regards to player negotiations and knows the true value of a footballer and knows what is a reasonable amount and also cut some 3rd party deals.

The fact our CEO was the Player Accrediation for the NRL, so he understands what player managers demand and knows how each one of them operate.

that like saying a second hand car dealer knows the true value of a car, it's their job to get the most for their client not what they are worth.

ANd it's my understanding only 2 players can have 3rd party deals to a max of $150k combined.

Not exactly, borny.

A player has every right to use their intellectual property rights to earn money. It becomes cloudy, however, when the Club is involved.

New Parramatta chief executive Paul Osborne admits he tried to convince Timana Tahu to consider playing rugby in Japan before luring the disgruntled Wallaby back to the Eels.
Osborne revealed Tahu had used him as a sounding board to voice his frustration at limited opportunities in the 15-man game just weeks before the former Canberra and St George prop had been appointed to succeed former Parramatta supremo Denis Fitzgerald.
Since then Osborne has managed to persuade the 28-year-old to return to the NRL with the Eels in 2010, the deal dependant on Tahu gaining a release from the last two years of his ARU contract.
Osborne said he told Tahu to explore the option of chasing the big money on offer in Japanese rugby, but was forced to quickly change his tune once he took over at the Eels.
"I know Timana and his family pretty well and I've been talking to them for a while about what he was going to do going forward because he hasn't been happy in rugby," Osborne told AAP on Thursday.
"We talked about going to Japan and then obviously I got this job and I had to change all that.

"I said `all that advice about going to Japan mate, I take it back'.
"He hasn't played a lot of footy, he's not happy and we'd welcome him back with open arms obviously.
"He lives five minutes from the ground - he's a very private person and he's very close to his wife and kids.
"If he's not happy on the field it's not good for him so I want to bring him hopefully to an environment where he's wanted."
Osborne was unclear just where Tahu stood in his bid to gain a release from his rugby deal, an ARU official confirming the dual international had yet to call their office to set up a meeting.
The ARU said Tahu would need to meet with high performance manager David Nucifora to discuss any release from his contract.
"He's in the process of trying to resolve a couple of issues with the ARU," Osborne said.

"Once he's ended his agreement with them then hopefully we can do something."
The addition of Tahu would cap a great recruitment drive by the Eels with NSW Origin prop Justin Poore and Sydney Roosters backrower Shane Shackleton having agreed to terms.

Osborne said his next priority would be re-signing the likes of Jarryd Hayne and Daniel Mortimer, who are amongst a host of players coming off contract at the end of next season.

Osborne denied the arrival of Tahu would impact the club's ability to hold onto Hayne, who has been in stunning form this season.
"We've got enough money floating around to sign Jarryd - Jarryd won't leave Parramatta because of money," Osborne said.

Everyone seems to be shifting INU! to the wing in their 2010 teams. I think it's a big mistake. Reddy would be shifting to wing if I had the clipboard.

You never know - it might work out better to shift Tahu to the wing.
