Time for Moylan to 5/8

Graham? You mean the guy who passed it into the 5th row in the stands...? Great halves game...
Yep the same Graham who put Tedesco away down the left only for Jennings to knock on and the same Graham who followed through on Maloney's bomb and had the brains to get foot to ball for Fafita's try. Are we talking about the same Graham?

Put "Us" in a position to win? That's the funny thing about assumptions. There is only an "us" when players run out in Panthers colours champ.

Yep, 2 on 1 they probably should make that tackle but we've all seen Jennings run over bigger men. And surely Jennings is close to if not over 100kgs? He is a solid bloke.

I thought it was a poor miss that led to Ferguson's break not necessarily the final ball that put him away. I'm probably wrong on that. In my opinion he proved he has potential in the position but overall had an average game. I think both Maloney and Graham played better halves games than Moylan and one of them is not a half. Anyway, I stand by what I said.

Wow.... I realise that you have every right to have an opinion, but Wow... IMO, your opinion is rubbish.

SO he kicked a ball off the ground and put Teddy through a big hole which means he played a better halves game than Moylan?

Moylan put Jackson through a hole wonderfully in the first half only to have Tedesco bomb it. He broke the line and almost put Farah over in the second half when Farah was tackled without the ball. He put Ferguson away which led to the winner and he would of had another clean linebreak from a twenty tap if Teddy had passed him the ball.

Graham was good I thought besides throwing a ball into the 10th row. I thought he really stood up when Fifita got binned and lifted the defensive intensity but no way he created more than Moylan imo.

My point is, the bloke wasn't perfect which seems to be what you expected from Moylan.

I think Moylan had a solid game. He was certainly not dominant in defence but he made his tackles under a lot of pressure.

He started to grow in confidence in the second half and made some nice plays. He just needs more time in the position and a half who compliments him which he certainly didn't have last night. Cleary has the kicking and organizing chops to allow Moylan his game. I think the other part is Moylan thrives with welp structured play. It will be harder for him coming into a new side as he needs other guys to do their job to be effective rather than a Bird who can make an impact with his physical attributes alone.

He showed enough to switch him for the rest of the year. Its an experimental year now so might as well give it a crack and if it doesn't pan out Martin can start R1.

My issue with running Martin off the bench if Moylan switches is that we will need to be blooding a hooker next year to be ready to step up when Wallace is done or injured. We can't carry say Martin and Katoa on the bench.

Why not experiment with TMM at hooker? He is pretty well built for a kid and can defend very well for a kid.

I Would like to see Griffin move toward making this our top 17 next year... starting with Peachey subbing at hooker. Moylan moving into the halves and Cartwright getting a run at lock.

1. Dallin Watene-Zelezniak
2. Dylan Edwards
3. Peta Hiku
4. Dean Whare
5. Josh Mansour
6. Matt Moylan (c)
7. Nathan Cleary
8. James Tamou
9. Tyrone Peachey
10. Reegan Campbell-Gillard
11. Trent Merrin
12. Isaah Yeo
13. Bryce Cartwright

14. Chris Grevsmuhl
15. Leilani Latu
16. James Fisher-Harris
17. Te Maire Martin

Obviously I am assuming Peachey gets a run at hooker and shows potential. That may not happen in which case you have Wallace at hooker and need to cut Peachey or TMM.

An awful lot of things would have to go right for this to work out.

Indeed. But that would be our best 17 and the best way to fit them all in.

Peachey at hooker is the key though. Like Moylan to the halves I doubt Griffin will consider it.

I'm still yet to see where Griffin has said he's not considering it. I've seen one article Billy put up saying he wasn't bringing Hardaker in specifically to put Moylan at 6 but that's it...

Hook to keep Moylan at fullback

CHRISTIAN NICOLUSSI, The Daily Telegraph
July 13, 2016 9:23pm
LAURIE Daley was happy to move Matt Moylan to five-eighth for an Origin dead rubber on Wednesday night — but Penrith coach Anthony Griffin maintains fullback is his best position.

The only other time Moylan played in the halves this season was a forgettable trial game where he was injured against Canterbury.

He will wear the No. 1 jumper for Penrith when they host Parramatta on Sunday at Pepper Stadium.

“Fullback is his best position at the moment,’’ Griffin told The Daily Telegraph ahead of Origin III.

“He might come out and have a blinder at five-eighth and prove he can play there, and I hope he does for NSW’s chances.

“It didn’t surprise me (Daley’s decision). I just hope he handles it OK and gets through the game. He’s a confident kid and he won’t die wondering. It’s certainly a big ask.
“There’s no doubt some day he has the ability to play five-eighth, and it’s the same for most fullbacks. You could put Darius Boyd there, and Billy Slater there. There’s no doubt most good fullbacks play five-eighth, it’s just a matter of whether it’s the right thing for them and the team at the time.’’

The Panthers had Jamie Soward as their five-eighth before he left for the Super League, while Bryce Cartwright has been doing a handy job. Rookie Te Maire Martin is also closing in on a return from injury.

“Bryce is doing a really good job, like all of our team the last couple of weeks, the execution has not been quite right, but Bryce is a great kid, I have a lot of faith in him and he’s doing a really good job there at the moment,’’ Griffin said.

Moylan spent time at five-eighth over the summer months, and often been compared to a young Darren Lockyer, who successfully made the switch from fullback to the halves midway through his career.

Cartwright is NOT doing a really good job there at the moment. I realise it is a press interview, which are 90% PR bullshit, but if that is what he really believes, then f**k me, he's a plank.

Griffin made the decision almost immediately after getting here for it not to happen and isnt going to change his mind. He seems deadset against the idea.

I don't like to admit this, but I basically agree with you :). I think that the best answer is from Gus's twitter feed - in answer to a tweet asking if the experiment with Bryce at 5/8 was over and stating that he should be in the back row, the answer was;

Phil Gould ‏@Gus10Gould Jul 10
Phil Gould Retweeted Ali Chahrour

He is doing a job for the team at present ..

I think that it is an indication that it is a stop gap measure until TMM is back.At least I hope it is!

Tom.

Frankus, only one player in either side created 2 line break assists. Moylan. A line break and 3 tackle breaks. He wasn't the next JT but he had a good solid game by any measure. Wade Graham made 1 more tackle than Moylan. The trouble is he missed 4.

Cartwright and Latu were the only two who looked like creating tries against Cronulla. And they were. Another half a one if not for getting the pass slightly wrong.

Not that it matters, Cartwright to 13 and Moylan to 6 won't make a difference in attack as they're both playing as 5/8s as it is. Cartwright to the edges would make a difference, it'd make it harder for him to play both sides of the field and give him one less edge forward to work with.

The difference is kick returns and having a fast fullback following Moylan around the middle of the park. This issue has gone way past the point of debate, Moylan is a 5/8 and if you disagree you are simply wrong

Have felt for a while that Moylan's lack of pace is costing us at the back , you need to be able to hit the line fast & hard.

Have seen his stats and he hardly has any line breaks , something which fullbacks have become known for.

It's a win win , we can strengthen both spots if the selections are done right.
