Todd Carney signing a slap in the face

By Dean Ritchie | March 26, 2009 12:00am

SYDNEY Roosters, you are kidding.

Signing serial bad boy Todd Carney is the most embarrassing and ill-conceived move in the club's history.

Shame on the officials who want to sign him, because the game doesn't need him. Carney has had ample chances to redeem his horrendous reputation but continues to reoffend.

The bloke can play football, no doubt, but he has alcohol issues.

Why would any club sign a player with these problems in the current climate? Is it not enough the game has been forced to deal with drunken players Brett Stewart, Anthony Watmough, Brett Seymour and Daniel Holdsworth in recent weeks?

If I was the chief executive of major sponsor Samsung I would be straight on the phone demanding answers. I would bluntly say: "If Carney signs, we take our millions of dollars elsewhere."

Quite obviously the Roosters do not care about the image of rugby league.

They only care about results. How selfish and self-centred. The game, and the Roosters' fans, deserve better.

im gonna ask the obvious question - how can they afford him? they offloading mini or something?

Maybe because we lost Tupou, Shillington, and Roberts last year and didn't sign a single player of note?

Anyway, why is my club so stupid. So many reasons...
I doubt Carney will even go this year without a f**kup.
Anasta at lock has been tried, proven to be a failure, and tried again. He's played career best form at five eighth for the past 2 years, and doesn't like lock.
And if because of this we lose either Sa or Minichiello, I will be spewing.

The roosters have a pretty strict drinking code as well. I think the players are allowed to drink once a week the night of the game or something.

As if Carney would be able to stick to it.

And referring to the article.. isnt Setaimata Sa signed till 2012? wtf
I thought he was too. Poor journalism

Its funny reading the Roosters supporters comments , I cant see him getting a friendly reception at home games either.

I hope he turns his life around I just cant see him doing it though.

Dean "bulldog" Ritchie didnt pull any punches did he, a very scathing attack all round, and your right kiki AFL gets away with blue murder compared to what our guys do in comparison.

Ritchie is a farkwit.

The "deal" is "in principle" and The Roosters have made it clear it won't happen unless he behaves himself.

Ritchie is either a hypocrite of the highest order or he is suffering from a medical condition where one's memory has been erased.

bullcrap...how many 400k superstars can one team have...what happened to not being able to afford mason so back loading his contract. How do they magically have the money to do this.

Roosters now from all reports have Minichiello on 400k, Anasta on 450k, Pearce on 400k, Myles on 350k, Mason on 400k, O'Meley on 400k. Thats 5 players on $2,000,000 between them. Add Carney on his huge contract and that gives you 19 players in a $1.6 mill salary cap (less than 85k per player). I doubt this very much considering they have Fitzgibbon, Soliola, Sa, Aubusson etc. in that mix who would also be on considerable money. Add to that all these superstars are on really long term deals.

this coming from a dogs fans who's team goes out and rapes the broncos and buys every player on the market, has a reserve grade team full of nrl players and still has to cheat to get 2 points.

[QUOTEThe Daily Telegraph has learned Carney and Roosters officials reached an agreement several weeks ago for the ex-Raiders ball-player to resume his NRL career with the tricolours.
]
That would be about the time he got busted for his latest criminal activity in Goulburn wouldn't it? He was charged with malicious damage to someones car. He only got bail by agreeing to leave town.

What a scumbag. That car may well have been the owners pride and joy only to have this serial offender desecrate it with his hoofs whilst heavily intoxicated (again!).

So the chooks have a player on a yet to be determined criminal charge who's not even welcome in his home town. Congratulations.

As for the "rorting the cap" "trying to buy a premiership" calls coming from the usual morons, i notice you all went quiet last year when we didn't sign anyone - in fact most of you were tipping us for bottom 4 as a result of not signing anyone. Rumoured to be signing one player and it starts right back up again...

Had Penrith got their way and signed him, i'm certain they would not be copping a fraction of the crap that we will from this.

One of the NRL clubs was bound to get him, but with his current attitude I don't see him changing.

I dont know if this is still the case, but through out my sports-management based degree there were some interesting stories being bandied about with regards to the Australian Football League and positive editorial stories in major news outlets.

Now in no way am I implying that the positive editorial is with regards to washing over 'the negative stories', however it was noted that it could have a major influence on the manner in which they were reported. I am not so naïve to think that that senior management would be on the phone if said organisation was copping a bum wrap from a media organisation reminding them of their importance to their revenue streams. I’ve seen media accreditation been removed from journo’s who didn’t tow the line. They've continued their crusade in the short term, but have changed their tune down the line when they realise that their lively-hood could be at stake.

The NRL has allowed it’s competition to be run by the media, first by dictation of game times, days, competition rounds. Now while that is healthy and critical for survival, it has now allowed the media to become their moral advisors. Gone is the course of justice and presumption of innocence until proven otherwise, we have a bunch of hypocrites running kangaroo court sessions through the papers and airwaves pushing their moral crusade on us. The Brett Seymour incident was the straw that broke the camels back, how the hell being intoxicated illegal and immoral is beyond comprehension, anyone would think Fred Nile is the new editor at Nein. From the Sharks and NRL’s point of view, for them not to have the balls to stand up to the media and tell them to shove it beggars belief. Had it been another sporting code, I believe it would have been a very minor story, regardless of allegations made earlier the week. Look at how CA handled the latest Symonds story, non-issue, that’s how Seymours incident should have been handled.

While other leaders are out their spinning bullsh*t PR, our game has sat back and been too modest. Demetriou, Buckley, Levick, O’Neill and Sutherland are all out their skewing their figures and pumping up their sports while the NRL sits back and boasts modestly every now and then.

Its time for the NRL to stand up and not let the media dictate on how its competition to be run. The game creates an awful lot of revenue for these companies and outlets, its about time the game shows them who’s boss.

:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap: Well said!!

If the media didn't get these incidents and make them front page news they wouldn't hurt the game.

A lot of young blokes do make mistakes, and sometimes it takes a while for them to mature, other blokes are just plain d**kheads and always will be. Does that mean they should not be allowed to play the game they love and are good at?

It seems that when a footballer does something wrong, everyone knows about it and everyone is ready to crucify them. Yet when it comes time to buy memberships and attend games, most of these crucifiers are no where to be seen.

Who are the real villains here, the ones writing Carney off as a waste of space, or the club giving the bloke a chance to do what he does best, play football?

Another one of those announcements that make me glad that I am not a Roosters fan.

No matter how low the actions of a footballer and how poorly they are perceived by the public, the Roosters wade straight into the middle of the fray, cheque book in hand and sign the bloke no questions asked. I doubt there'd be a market for it anywhere but if one does exist, I wouldn't mind having a couple of $$ on them signing Greg Bird if and when he is allowed back into the NRL.

To all the sucky Roosters fans who are saddened by this news, harden the f**k up!

It sounds to me like you tow Dean Ritchies "all they care about is results" line. Well fancy that! In a competitive sport about winning a team is focused on results! Who would have thought it. As long as we dont break any rules then he can go and cry in his bowl of cereal.

Carney is no hardened criminal. He has screwed up a few times but that doesnt mean he shouldnt be allowed to earn a living doing the only thing he's good at.

I can't stand it when fans whinge when their club takes a punt and signs a world class player. "But but but, hes naughty!". This isn't the Wiggles League FFS. Give him a chance and stop whinging like you did with Mason. And if we do win a comp with him i fully expect you all to be tuned out and protesting as opposed to celebrating.

Bottom line is let us win a comp with Carney and Mason rather than have poor seasons like we have for the last 4 years. The best years weve had for over 30 years occurred when we were the most despised club in League because we were so phenomenally good. So if being hated by poor old Dean Ritchie and a few other jealous fans is the price to pay for winning then so be it.

Welcome aboard Todd Carney.
