Christian Chivu (AS Roma) Real Madrid CF for €18 Million

From what I've seen of him, he is a very elegant defender with excellent technical ability, so he should fit in quite well IMO. Although we do have a pretty poor track record with former Serie A defenders for some reason. IMO he is a far better player than Heinze (who we were previously linked with) although it's important to remember that noone will be quite the same as Roberto Carlos. :(

Hopefully hybrid will fill me in a bit more though. There's no doubt in my mind that we spent maybe a little too much, but only because Barca and Inter were also heavily interested...

As for out backline next season:

Casillas

Cicinho--S.Ramos--Cannavaro--Chivu

Backups: Miguel Torres, Metzelder, Helguera, Marcelo, and Salgado(?)

To me it looks like a backline capable of challenging for the Champions League.. although I'm a bit biased.. What's everyone else's thoughts?

My thoughts are the Arsenal will have backs than Real Madrid:
Emmanuel Eboue, Kolo Toure, William Gallas, Gael Clichy as the back 4(Right-Left).
We have back-up defenders, who can get the job done if needed in Phillipe Senderos, Justin Hoyte, Johan Djourou, Matthew Connolly, Kerea Gilbert, Joe O'Ceauriall and Armand Traore. :D

Nigel Reo Coker - Villa :)

That's a hit to the ego for him that no club that's any good wanted him...

chivu is a top line defender, excellent replacement for roberto carlos, but they play different styles, madrid fans wont recognise that and will demand roberto carlos style runs

We have the heir to Roberto Carlos' position (for both Brazil and RM) already in waiting. His name is Marcelo (18 y.o.): http://youtube.com/watch?v=Mwol2ws-8Jc

Besides, Cicinho is no stranger to making blistering runs up the touchline himself ;-)

LOL.. Your first choice Back 4 is only decent at best. As for your backups.. well Raul Bravo would stand out from that lot

There are many many games in a season so Metzelder is guaranteed to get his chances. Don't call it a "bad move" until it is one ;-)...

What I don't understand is: Why did we bother selling Woodgate only to pick up Metzelder?.. They're both as injury prone as eachother :?

£20M ace Tevez: I'm joining Man Utd
tribalfooball.com - July 04, 2007

Manchester United have sensationally agreed a £20 million deal for West Ham United striker Carlos Tevez overnight.
The Daily Mail says the move will be completed next week, subject to any challenge from West Ham, who still claim to own the registration of the player who saved them from relegation last season.

However, West Ham have no contract with Tevez and his owner, businessman Kia Joorabchian, which has left the player and his representative free to negotiate a transfer with other clubs.

The news, breaking in South America last night, means that United will take their summer buying past the £70m mark, confirming them as the biggest spenders in world football.

Tevez was once fined when playing for Brazil's Corinthians for turning up to an official press conference wearing a Manchester United shirt.

He will fly from Argentina's Copa America base here to join United's pre-season programme.

"He just cannot contain his excitement at the news," a source close to the Argentina camp confirmed. "Tevez has been concerned about his future, worried about where he may play next season and now he is joining the biggest club in the world! This is massive news."

Tevez is best friends with United's Argentine defender Gabriel Heinze and was a guest at their end-of-season title party in a London club.

This is going to get messy.. He has to be contracted to West Ham or sheffield would have been able to prove one of their points...

Looks like the Chivu  R.Madrid deal has hit the rocks, with a disagreement in regards to salary: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=443540&cc=5739

Personally I'm not too flustered which way this deal goes.

Other signings expected to be completed in the next week or 2:

Bernd Schuster - Manager
Arjen Robben (Chelsea)
Royston Drenthe (Feyenoord)
Jose Antonio Reyes (Arsenal) - possibly

Hmm... it seems we have a thing for left-footers.. :?

so a year out from euro 2008 as your nations #1 defender you'd walk out on guarenteed first team spot for the chance to play copa del rey and the last 10 minutes when real are up 4-0?
