Considering no DWZ, no Mansour either. Attack looked more than a bit ho hum. Whether Panthers were keeping their powder dry so to speak in round 1 who knows.

Penalties were big issue in the first half. Hope that can be sorted out soon.

And of course the elephant in the room. What happened yesterday. That would have had an impact too.

And refs should ref how they will in the season proper so the players can get used to it.
Ref one side for 60 minutes then put it in your pocket once the result is decided.

Maybe the plan is to get the media talk off player behaviour and on to refs.

I don't mind players being binned in a trial - it is good practice for defending with 12.

I was at the game and we didn’t play with 12 after the binning. As soon as Maloney went off Katoa came on and we continued playing with 13. I assume we were able to do it because it was a trial.

This was a masking performance, besides having ourselves short of starters.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the Parra coach after realising those two injured players wont be playing against us in a fortnight.

Now tell me who really won.

Things that seemed evident to me from watching the game at the ground:

- we look much bulkier than last year. Almost everyone has put on a lot of size. Players like Luai and Phillips are almost unrecognisable physically compared to last year. Even players that used to be more rangey like Yeo and RCG have filled out compared to the end of last season.

I suspect that means we have traded size for a bit of the cardio endurance we used to show last year.

I also suspect it means we will start games better but we won’t come home super strong and over come late deficits like we did last year. We therefore better hope we can stay in games.

- We look much better drilled in defence. Our defensive structures are much better. Our scramble was good. We are approaching tackles in an organised way and our wrestle was better. Even our warm up looked significantly more organised than what it was last year.

- Our attack was directionless and did not look any better than last season. When both Cleary and Maloney were on the field Cleary was the one calling the shots and our attack was flat.

- I am not sure why but we also didn’t offload. I only remember two offloads from us in the entire game.

The size would be because all our guys are so young and filling out and it will also help in defence as they'll be individually stronger.

Ivan's teams don't offload. Defence and mistake free and scrap out wins

I'm 100% sure we held a lot in reserve seeing as we play them again in two weeks. Doesn't mean I expect much from our attack with Cleary at the helm, but it'll be a lot better than this. I think this result is useful if it causes the Eels to get all over-excited.

Your description was very sound, and it reflected what I saw on the broadcast.

We did look bigger, and defending for most of the game wasn't ideal if you wanted to do some ball work.

Take nothing away from Parra, they played what was put in front of them. We were ill disciplined, predictable from dummy half or one pass off the ruck, not to mention the odd dropped pass.

It will be a different result in round 1 as we'll be fielding a much different line up, and we'll be more than ready for them. That, I am very sure of.

A team like this who thrived on a piggy back penalty count of around 19-4,should have won by this score, and even more.

They won't have a dog in the next fight.

could we all tweet at Gus for us to wear black shorts with the white jersey? that full white was really off putting and didn't look too nice

Parra are ordinary. They will be bottom 4 a better team puts us to the sword.

They just held the ball or rolled it ingoal. It was basic and we handled very poorly

Or is it all that ball work over fitness? Too early to know yet but the signs point to a long season

Our top team seems to have less mistakes and better defence. I don't mind the trade off though that's a subjective opinion.

The signs from that game weren't bad. We defended well with the weight of possession against us. The reserve graders got smashed by first graders. Not entirely unexpected.
