Trial v Parramatta

Our top team seems to have less mistakes and better defence. I don't mind the trade off though that's a subjective opinion.

The signs from that game weren't bad. We defended well with the weight of possession against us. The reserve graders got smashed by first graders. Not entirely unexpected.

By the 30th minute. Grant, Ellis, Sele and Fuimaono were on. Compare that to that Bulldogs trial last year where we didn't make a change that whole 1st half.

That game you could see we were going for fitness. Tonight we treated like a normal game and got found wanting.

Not the end of the world as it is a trial but given the changes off field you expect us to be further along if we are top 4 team

those that watched how long was our top team on for the game And of the injured players who will be back for round 1

Our starting side - which stayed on for 25 mins, was basically our top team, although it lacked Mansour, DWZ and Kikau. While our top team was on we held them to 0.

Our pack was all off by 30th minute. All except Kikau and maybe May will be back you'd expect those who didn't play tonight to be well underdone

The sad thing was our attack in the 1st set was as bad as the last set

Their defence would have been as fresh as a Daisy for most of the game.

It was a trial, and it was what it was. I wouldn't go over analysing it for what it wasn't worth.

I mean, except to see the players run around, who really gets hyped up about a trial match?

I'm happy as a pig in shit that there were no injuries.

Trials are a good guide to see where the team sits going forward. I agree mostly mean nothing.

That said watching both trials. I think my prediction of being around where we were last year looks about right.

Good news is injuries aren't out of control and we won't be near the cursed Premiership Favs

If anything, match fitness is what counts. And getting the body into on contact collisions, and getting the body into that "healing routine" is what it's about for all teams.

All about prep.

I totally agree.

Added to that this was Clearys first hit out since his surgery. As others have said the top team was holding the NRL Parramatta team quite well. The absence of DWZ, Mansour Leota didn't help either. The finishing of set pieces showed the lack of DWZ and Mansour.

Yep we looked rusty for sure.

The penalties at times early on were pedantic too. That doesn't help when your being starved of the ball, and the other team gets dubious piggy backs up field.

I'd say the paint of the dressing room walls might need re doing. Gus and Ivan would have had their say. The defence structure did look much better.

Time will tell if 2019 is our year or not.

The thing is with being starved off the ball. That is exactly what we did pretty much the last 2 years.

In Isolation can go it was just a trial. Too many bad habits still were in our game

What scares me most about that performance was the penalties. Last year was probably the worst year of football I have ever seen due to massive penalty counts.
I hope the refs put the whistle away, I don’t want to watch another season of 20+ Penalties a game.
The sin bin was getting abused as well and players were milking it for all it was worth.

Plays like deliberately throwing the ball into defenders and the quick tap and take a dive increased and getting sent to the bin for being in the wrong place at the wrong time ( Kade) was a disgrace.
We suffered more than most last year that needs to change quick if we are going to be competitive.

.

Gus should not be in the rooms playing at being coach. Either he is coach or he is the GM - he can't be both. That was half the problem last year. Of course, he other half of the problem was Hook, maybe even the bigger half. The sooner Gus realises he can't do both jobs, the better. However the behaviour is repetitive - I think he is blind to the problem.

You think Ivan will put our whole bench on at once after 30 minutes?

Didnt use the bench at all like a normal game.

4 minutes to go, score 20-0, Katoa makes a break, Fisher Harris tackled just short. Parra all offside to the left, the lot of them. That's the way the ball went and it broke down. Should have been penalty/bin. The game was over but Atkins could not find it in his heart to give a penalty. He's not a first grade ref on that performance. I know it was only a trial but this shit happens in premiership matches too.

I notice also this is the only game that stats have not been posted up on NRL site. Maybe they are embarrassed.

Atleast 7 or 8 occassions last night we should have got penalties and didnt based on how quickly soft penalties were blown against us.

If that shit happens in an NRL match It would be impossible to go under the radar. If we play like that in Round 1 though we are in for a very long 5 years. Just hope we didnt get anymore injuries to our starting side. We dont have the depth to cover them. No metres in this side with Mansour, DWZ and Kikau out.
