Do you think a board containing some of the best business minds in the country would not have a long term strategy to which money will be directed? You can't base future performance on the past performance of a separate entity. I swear that hysteria was outed as nonsense years ago.

But don't let that stop the people in this forum from thinking they know better...

But with capable hands and knowledge of the past, the cycle of failure can be broken. Lets give them a chance to prove themselves before writing them off. After all, they're the experts, not us.

9 and Fox weren't going to stump up a billion without some of the conditions favouring them. They seem to to like it the way it is and were prepared to pay more than double what they were paying to keep it as is.

That the ARLC have accepted that but were able to get rid of first/last rights is win/win for mine.

I'd take a billion for what we have now over 800 million for 4 live FTA games each week every time. 40 million dollars per year will fix a lot of problems.

The fact is that the code needs the money, the ARLC can't fix the juniors drama, the bush dramas with a pat on the head, they need $ to do it.

I don't like that we're stuck with 9, they're well past their use-by-date, but all in all it's a bloody good deal...

It can't be ONLY about the money though. Yes a billion dollars is good but this agreement is going to drive people away from the game. As I already said, I can't afford Foxtel and like most people I hate the delayed games so I'm just not going to be able to watch that much footy. I don't live near Brookvale Oval and taking a 2 year old to night games just isn't feasable. My options are pretty limited and I'd imagine plenty of supporters are in worse situations than me. the ARLC has dropped the ball. More money means nothing to the fans that do not get to see their teams play.

Why? It might not attract as many fans as it could, but it's not like fans are leaving the game in droves at the moment. The game is growing on pretty much any scale you'd care to measure.

It's not perfect but anyone ranting that the money is meaningless (aware that you specifically aren't doing that) is an absolute idiot.

There are two types of people docbrown.

Those that ask questions.... and those that follow blindly into the furnace.

Forgive us for asking questions. I shall now blindly follow you to wherever you shall lead me oh superior one.

In all seriousness, the fans of the game have been pouring out concerns on all forms of media since the announcement today with legitimate questions.

Is this deal the best we could have hoped for from all aspects?
Is this deal only such a great deal because of the monetary avenues it opens up?
What are the plans for those in the country who cannot obtain foxtel? Or do they not matter? You know... those grass roots areas they bang on about.

I think that the money is brilliant, really it is. It will give them a great chance to compete with the AFL and grow the game to what it could really be.

But surely even you as a fan of the game would be somewhat disappointed with keeping the status quo in relation to live games and the exposure of the game.

As always, time will judge this deal, as we all recall, the last deal was also heralded as a magnificent deal.....at the time.

Surprised NEWS let this get published.

http://www.couriermail.com.au/sport...g-the-nrl-rights/story-e6frep5x-1226454849344

FANS have reacted strongly to the news the Nine Network and Fox Sports will retain the NRL rights for the next five years. Here's what you had to say.

Omoz of Newcastle wrote: "Terrible news for the game. Channel Nine have shown time and again their disrespect for Rugby League. Their general coverage of sport is pathetic, just look at the Olympics and their disgraceful coverage of Rugby Union in the last two years. The station is out-of-touch with what fans want. The use of Ray Hadley as a commentator is a joke on TV. Only one Friday night game is required, plus bring back a 3 pm Saturday arvo game. Also the Sunday game should be live. The NRL has erred in their decision. The AFL is streets ahead in terms of coverage. AFL fans have greater access to their game on free-to-air TV, plus a dedicated channel on Fox. Oh well 5 more years of Nine's coverage and the AFL's domination should be almost complete. Sad day for the Greatest Game of All!"

Disappointing deal of NSW wrote: "What a shame... the commision has stuffed up with this deal. we need to provide more exposure for the game and needed to get as many games as possible on free to air. at least 4-5 games and one of the saturday night games needed to be on channel nine. rugby league will never catch afl at this rate and now have to wait another 5 years to do so with the afl showing alot more then 3 games on free to air. until now the commision was doing a good job, real shame."

Paj of NSW wrote: "The money amount is good. Could never of competed with the AFL having 9 games and over double the ads per live game. I think it is a poor decision keeping Monday football - the crowds are always shocking? If channel nine is not showing the games live with increased pre and post game coverage then it will be a bit of a joke."

Daz of QLD wrote: "Well there goes any chance of a fair competition for the next several years. I am truly disappointed in this result, I was hoping that Nine would lose the rights & suffer for their arrogance. I just hope that the Commission set down a few ground rules such as all teams getting an equal share of Fri, Sat, Sun & Mon night games. How can this competition EVER be fair when Bronco's get something like 18 Friday night games & Sharks get 1?? No wonder Sharks are struggling with sponsors & Brisbane made a million this year. If channel neins reign over NRL continues in its current format then I think its time to change the sport I have lived & breathed for the last 40 years & watch something else."

Kane of Brisbane wrote: "Well I just hope that we get a very thorough explanation as to WHY they chose channel 9 and Fox over the other offers... If there is a method to their madness, then lets hear it! Hope they haven't sold their soul. The COMMISSION needs to schedule games etc and be in charge, NOT the official broadcasters!"

So they supposedly signed a confidentiality agreement but instead of just saying that he couldn't answer the question because of said agreement he chose to look like and A grade dick instead? Or did he sign a confidentiality agreement about signing a confidentiality agreement hence why he couldn't mention it?

It's very easy to say (or not in this case) there's a CA in place to give an excuse to deflect the inevitable questions that were always going to come in regards to rival bids. I doubt there's anything stopping 7 and 10 from announcing/leaking what their bids entailed so i'm sure that'll make for some very interesting reading.

$92 a month according to foxtel.

I'd rather pay my house off faster than spend $1104 a year on foxtel. It's also a lot of money for some people, keeping in mind that RL has traditionally been the game of the working class.

Spot on. $92 a month is f**ken expensive when all you really want is the sports channels.

Buy Foxtel you whinging cant's.

Spend the time you spend in here whinging on a paper route or whatever to afford the whopping 18 bucks a week.
Foxtel sports package cost $81 a month.
You can go f**ked if you think were going to spend $81 a month for 5 f**king football games.
Doc Whore shows where his priorities are in life.

Don't think people realise how cash strapped the game has been.
Reality is we needed the money this time to sort ourselves out. Yes more FTA live games would have been nice, yes a new commentary team would have been nice, yes live on Fox every game would have been nice (fricking brill in fact!), yes more day games would have been nice, yes less Broncos would have been nice, yes a ninth game announcment with two new exciting teams coming in would have been nice. Reality is none of those things are essential over the next 5 years, cold hard cash is as the game re establishes itself and gets its house in order. It needs money at this point in time far far more than it needs FTA live games.

M2D2 I am sure Cronulla will take a $2.5millgrant increase over more FTA games any day of the week!

Looks like another network offered live FTA footy on Fri, Sat, Sun and Mon. Methinks this was Channel 10.

And thank you for calmly considering a response. Just because someone has an opposing opinion to yours doesn't mean that they are blind to the situation.

But fans are no worse off, in fact if the money gets used well they may be a lot better off. Clubs will be a lot better off, marketing will be better, grass roots will be better, the game can expand, we can grow new markets, we can subsidise memberships, we can offer free hotdogs if we want!

I think the deal gives the game the money it needs to do something different, I will judge the outcome of it on what the ARLC uses the money for.
