TV rights thread part 4

As for 2SM, f**k Graeme Hughes the whinging, whining, negative prick. He deserves nothing from anyone involved at the NRL. Gallop's decision on the radio rights was wrong as far as I'm concerned but Hughes whinged about it for years. Every time you turned the radio on, he was whinging about it again, so I stopped listening to 2SM, period.

He's right up there with Mike Gibson for mine, utter merkins the pair of them and both as bad as any turncoat.

I hope upon hope that they drop exclusive rights but ban 2SM from calling games, just to piss him off again.

Given some time to think about it I'm less annoyed. They got a bunch of cash, and have effectively wiped their hands of any control Nine and Fox can have from 2018.

Provided IPTV rights are available to all and not just those with Foxtel connections it's not that bad. Still not happy about seeing Nine for 5 more years but the money should put the game in a better position long term.

Now if the IPTV rights are restricted in some way I'm going to be upset.

Don't think people realise how cash strapped the game has been.
Reality is we needed the money this time to sort ourselves out. Yes more FTA live games would have been nice, yes a new commentary team would have been nice, yes live on Fox every game would have been nice (fricking brill in fact!), yes more day games would have been nice, yes less Broncos would have been nice, yes a ninth game announcment with two new exciting teams coming in would have been nice. Reality is none of those things are essential over the next 5 years, cold hard cash is as the game re establishes itself and gets its house in order. It needs money at this point in time far far more than it needs FTA live games.

M2D2 I am sure Cronulla will take a $2.5millgrant increase over more FTA games any day of the week!

You don't post much, or anything, worth reading generally.

But congrats on this one.

And thank you for calmly considering a response. Just because someone has an opposing opinion to yours doesn't mean that they are blind to the situation.

No it apparently means that asking questions is flying off the handle.

Exactly my views.

In fact I'll actually be happy if IPTV rights are available.

I don't think 2SM are interested this time around.

Thats like telling a prisoner that hes no worse off because he had his jailterm extended.
We the fans have to deal with the same shitty coverage for the next 5 f**king years.
One live FTA game a week is criminal. We were in a shit situation since super league, this was our chance to move away, have the fans back, but instead its "f**k the fans, we got a billion dollars, maybe next time chumps".
No marketing on the f**king planet can sell the game like the game can itself.
Grass roots will be neglected and mistreated like it has before.
They wont subsidise memberships. in 5 years time memberships/tickets will be more expensive then they are now, not less.
The only people this deal will help are the rich clubs who will get richer.

Weve just had the rug pulled out from under our feet and sold out for more money.
f**king money. Weve been complaining about the broadcasting of channel 9, foxtel and news limited since super league. Yet now here we stand willing to suffer with it for the next 5 years for more money.
As somebody has already said earlier in this thread.
The more things change the more they stay the same.

We should be united as one that we, the fans, just got hoodwinked so certain people and clubs got richer and the fans spat on from a great height. But instead, "Its a billion dollars".
What a disgusting day.

I honestly think some people were never going to be happy no matter what was done. At least we have a huge pile of money and contractually RL is free from any clauses. Its more than any other contract has offered in a long time. Gallop screwed both the money and the scheduling.

Channel 10 has just confirmed with Hughes that they offered Fri night live, Saturday night live, Sunday arvo live and Monday night live on FTA.

Now you're putting word in my mouth. Flying off the handle refers to the tantrums in this forum, not the "asking questions".

for a lot less money and 9 and Fox still had first and last rights options this time and would have had them next time too

To the whingers - it's only a matter of time before the full details of what 7 & 10 had offered are leaked out.

Sure, you may have wanted certain things that you didn't get but you need to realise that

a) they might not have even been on offer or
b) they would have come at a significant financial cost

It's easy to know what should have been done in hindsight but there are practical considerations to be taken into account during negotiations such as these. There is always give and taken and you have no idea what was being offered and for what impact.
Too true.

But I think ultimately what the other networks offered wont be that important. We went with 9 and fox this time to get rid of the bid rights.

While I am very disappointed in the coverage, and the missed opportunity to shake up the status quo for the better, what the Commission has done is removed the hold of any broadcasters over the code, at the cost of favourable coverage for the next 5 years. We are paying down the last of the debt from the SL war.

The next deal will be the first of the new generation of deals. When we can split rights how we like, sell the game in any way we see fit, and TRULY set the game up for the future.

This deal is the last of the old, the next will be the first of the new.
