It's all about the wordingPerth & Adelaide bring next to no new fans. Look at ratings in Melbourne a much bigger city. Game would be stronger with more Brisbane clubs. Crazy to see ppl dispute this in year ratings are tanking with poor broncos season.
Actually no - when wanderers brought in Sydney fc actually saw increase in members & attendance. Thid with new team matching those numbers. Same will be case in Brisbane as derbies draw attention. Perth & Adelaide won't bring muchIt's all about the wording
- New brisbane teams would likely bring in no new fans, just the same fans maybe watching/attending more times
The couple thousand odd supporters who would follow perth/adelaide would be brand new to the game ei. growth
- Perth and Adeliade would bring in new fans that otherwise would not be watching/attending any games
the thousands who would support the new brisbane team/s were likely already attending/watching ei. no growth
IMO a bye should be avoided at all costs, it makes the compition even more unequal than it already is with a "half-ish" H/A schedule. Who gets the bye the week before finals? etc.
for sure memberships will go up, but those people who bought wanderers memberships would of likely been following soccer and watching/attending soccer games already - they wouldn't of been brand new fans who started following the sport because of the new teamActually no - when wanderers brought in Sydney fc actually saw increase in members & attendance. Who knows really?? Broncos won't decline because has never happened elsewhere which means you're picking up new ppl as members & going to games that weren't before. Well yeah thats the debate I guess, because there's no way to know if someone going to a brisbane 2 game used to go to broncos games, or is also going to broncos games, or watching broncos games on tv etc, theres noone asking these questions and even if there was polls are never usually that accurate unless everyone is asked.Who knows really?? I can't see a 17 team competition lasting for long, precisely for those reasons. A weekly bye is unfair, commercially stunting & unsustainable.
The times that the top tier has had uneven numbers has been pretty short-lived (mid 1980s after Newtown went broke but before 1988s expansion, Mid 2000s after Souths got booted but before the Titans joined).
Since the NRL is dead keen to keep the current 16 teams afloat, I predict an 18th team will come very soon after a 17th. No way will they add a team then cut one to bring it back to 16.

I agree Brisbane definately 100% needs another team, and it will be the next team, and they probably deserve a 3rd but the issue with that is who misses out to achieve this?, theres too many slots already taken up (looking at you Sydney)
Because they are a top team!!!! Melbourne average about 20k on FTA in Melbourne. St George actually the highest drawing away team. Canberra & Gold Coast both cities of considerable size don't draw at all. It's traditional teams & rivalries which draw. Redcliffe is apparently one of the most well known brands in qld sports - they'd boast numbers against those teams.Melbourne are one of the most watched teams in the NRL. You seem to not be able to understand that most fans who are watching NRL on TV are neutrals, not fans of the particular club in the particular city the club is from. A multitude of factors go into TV audiences, form and style being two big ones. People watch Melbourne because they are good, they score exciting tries and the idea of big city v big city is more appealing to many than suburb v suburb.
throw in the 20k average that actually attend in person and thats 40k fans that likely would have not much to do with anything NRL otherwiseBecause they are a top team!!!! Melbourne average about 20k on FTA in Melbourne.
Perth isn't dissimilar, there is currently around 30-40k active RL fans in Perth by my experiences at games. A WC Pirates team will convert many of these into regular attenders.
More than likely Brisbane2 will pick up th emore casual Broncos fan who only turns out for big games or when Broncos are doing wekll, or non Broncos fans in Brisbane who either don't follow the broncos on principle or who follow a different NRL team and adopt Brisabne2 as their second team/ If they can get 20k plus (and they'll need to our Suncorp will look as bad as ANZ or Allianz!) then doesn't really matter. They wont be new fans to the game though, as you said they'll already be RL fans who hopefully attend more regularly.
You will be hard pressed to find anyone who is against a second Brisbane team - its definately a mustThe rivalry between the Broncos and B2 will be one of the biggest in Australian sport and that will create more fans and more passion in existing fans in Brisbane.
Brisbane is the only city in the country that does not have a rivalry of this type and it would be by far the biggest city with a 2 team rivalry.
It will definitely create new fans for the game up there.

Its the 3rd team at the expense of somewhere else that is more of an argument

Perth needs a Sydney team to take 6 games a year there (Western Panthers) and they need to turn out in big numbers and convince that team to relocate full time.
Auckland2
we really don’t. We need a team we can call our own and build a following for and that kids can aspire to playing for. No one is going to care too much about a fly In fly out Sydney club.
