don't about 40 to 50% of first year students drop out before the end of the year? I'm pretty sure that has something to do with it

What I was getting at when I said it weeds out the dummies.

Got my final exam results ever today, 85, 81, 80 and 78 to finish with. Hard not to be happy with that. Now into the real world (which sucks apparently).

well done

my sister got her results today and was particularly unpleasant about it, she decided she wants to quit uni apparently because she's not accustomed to failure. She chose to fail one of the subjects, she was very disappointed by getting two Fs, but the idiot is only first year. She was a real idiot about it for a few hours. It really showed me the mindset which leads to the high turnovers in first year uni, despite idiots being capable (she got better HSC results than I did). She is straight out of high school I also have a 21 year old brother in his first year of uni who got in through tafe somehow (he successfully completed one tafe semester last year and somehow that qualified him to get into uni), he doesn't even look at his results and he's happy. We're all surprised that he continues to go to university and that he ever went in the first place so we're just happy for him that he keeps going.

I guess the other reason for high failure rates in the first year subjects are because the study habits from high school that people use do not translate into effective university study habits. My friend who absolutely demolished every single uni subject she did (only 3 credits, everything else was a d or hd) but barely cracked an 80 UAI (course had a low 80*** cut off), whereas some people I know have gotten mid 90s and struggled with uni.

***I didn't actually remember this, we were talking about it today.

I also found, funnily enough, that the HSC courses for some topics didn't cover everything that was considered assumed knowledge in first year university. And university being university, if you're behind the eight ball to start with, you're screwed.

Tertiary education is only about 2 things. Firstly perseverance, secondly a willingness to work hard & get the work done. Both my wife & I decided to attend Uni f/t with 2 kids under 5, I had 3 part time jobs just to male ends meet. I remember one week we had the kids food sorted but we had to eat rice & chicken stock for 2 days. Certainly makes me appreciate the position we are in now.

Anyone can be a success @ Uni, the key is wether they really want to be or are they jut making all the noises to make it appear they want it.

Just MO of course. Congrats to those who have just finished.

All very true, especially in the position you were with kids. I am getting through law school doing three quarters of a full time load at present (considering doing full time from semester 2 next year), while working full time and with 2 children one of whom is only 6 months old.

If anyone is prepared to put in the work, sacrifice a few things along the way it's more than possible to do successfully. Having a fully supportive wife who appreciates that i have to spend a fair bit of time in the study working and not assisting with the family helps.

It's certainly tough at times and as a result i have a much greater appreciation of those who go back to study while working and with a family.

Being a full time student would be sweet though, some of them complain because we have exams that start at 8:30, that's far to early to be up and about apparently..

Lucky merkins

For you budding uni students, heed my advice: like at high-school, the majority of what you learn will have been forgotten five years out of university. I have courses on my transcript I don't even remember taking, let alone what we actually learnt in them. The key thing to get out of university is the capacity to learn on your own and to know how to find and adapt resources to the real world problems you will encounter. Don't worry too much about your marks. Concentrate on assignments where you are employing the aformentioned skills. Do a good job on them and you can present them to your future employers as solid evidence that you can work, rather than just presenting a number out of 100 in some course they don't know anything about.

Sharp advice. Anything over 5,000 words should be reworked and proposed for publishing. Even if you do not get it published, work with your lecturers after it's been marked to make it perfect to present to anyone (i.e., future employees, other institutions, etc) in the future.

Also, great story _Johnsy, and I agree.

I've been waiting for an acceptance letter and invitation to get my student card for so long. I had to resort to sending emails asking what was going on and I got responses of you're a strong candidate, we are definitely accepting you, move forward as if you will be doing this this year, you should get official documentation at some point. Today I got this email from the graduate research candidature officer (I censored out her details)
Dear Hala,

I have been informed by the Faculty that your Master of Philosophy (MPhil) application has been approved.

Could you please provide original certified documents by J.P and post them to me at stoopid address (attention to stoopid lady, myself) to issue your Offer Letter:
Ø Your academic transcript

Ø Your Birth Certificate

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions.
Best regards,

stoopid lady

I've just approached my former university (University of New England) about undertaking my Master of Education with them via correspondence. No word back from them yet, but that's typical of them over the holidays.

Half price public transport and cheaper sporting event tickets.

I'm never leaving uni :)

To be fair though.. It's not quite a 50% discount on public transport in Brisbane.

I don't find that.. It's the same every time on my bus..

Still save about 1k per year with the green card.

is that because after your 9th trip in a week, the rest of your week is free?
And some trips are about 20 cents, so just take nine cheap trips early in the week, and travel freely (literally) all across Queensland for the rest of the week

I've considered stocking up on student bus passes now that I'm finished... they barely ever check to see if you are actually a student.

Uni is easy. So far consists of waking up at 1, not paying attention in lectures because it's online and self-explanatory, then swimming and drinking.

I expect it's downhill from here.

I have a BA with a double Major in Geography and Sociology from Auckland Uni and a Certificate in Human Resource Management.

Currently living/working/travelling etc in Canada and am trying to get into HR or recruitment. If that doesnt work out, I plan on going back to uni next year or the year after to do my teaching degree.
