I went to the game last night and this is how I saw it:
*Hayne very average at 5.8 but will get better over time
*Attack was fine, it was little knock ons that let us down and halted our momentum, 2 tries were bombed
*Defence substantially more solid, one try concded were from a stupid kick by Hayne
*Hauraki looked 5 times better then 2008 player
*Mannah looks very, very promising
*Line speed was very quick
*Scramble defence was excellent
*Grothe and Ben Smith defended excellently together
Overall, if we can fix the handling errors I think we will be a Top 8 side for sure this year.

Your defensive line speed was excellent and reminiscent of the Roosters in there former glory days.

I really hope that was the case. IMO our line speed has been the single worst part of our game over the last few seasons. It also would indicate that DA has been working the guys very hard over the break.

So...

Hayne went well @ 5/8th...no hang on, he was crap.
Finch steered the team well......no he was crap too.
But Grothe went well....... when he wasnt crap playing crap as well.
Keating was OK, when he also wasnt being crap.
Tautai cant pass.
Ben Smith limps.
Feleti was ordinary...when he wasnt being good?
But Hindy is a legend.

So the best thing out of the game was the final score.

FMD I cant wait 4 the Warriors game so I can get an idea.

  .... yeah i think that sums it up pretty well

The most impressive aspect was our defence! We didn't fall for any second man plays, we stuck solid and followed the ball and not the decoys......

The 2 Penrith tries were unlucky, their first try came off a forward pass then pure luck with the bounce of the ball and the second was off a Hayne error.

Mateo looked awesome, he made everything look easy! Kris looked very good when he was 5/8th and even beter when in half, imo Finch still lacks any type of execution, his passion, commitment and effort cannot be denied but his attack is very average for a halfback!

Hauraki was great i thought, some really good touches.

The attack was also a little stunted because we changed the halves a few times in the second half and it got a little scrappy i thought. It started to look better though when Hayne and Kris went back in to the halves, i thought they were both looking quite sharp.

It wasn't necessarily pretty or anything but there were some very god signs and i actually thought the intensity was great for a trial.

In the end we all need to remember it was only a trial no need to bag the hell out of the players for their first real hit out for the season, couldn't believe some of the comments on here when i got home at 2am!!

f/t Parra 18-10

Good hit out, Hauraki played well but hands let him down a little, running angles etc as he did before Hagan

At the end, Grothe forced error with big hit , Hayne picked up spilt ball and ran 80 mtrs to score.

Much more ball movement than under Hagan, coach has apparently told them to play what is in front of them a lot more.No injuries, Ben Smith moved to 2nd row when Jono Wright came on, defended with venom.

Will get a review from Stagger , he will no doubt update fully later. Did comment that we wouldn't have beaten a top four side, need to improve in final execution as splits made weren't converted.

NYC a little disappointing, won the games that mattered, NRL and the Junior reps that were for points, Stagger suggests that NYC could be a lean year, need to watch that grade closely as there is a lot of pressure on the coach.

Great news on Grothe's big hit and Benny's strong defence. I'd love to have a hitman in defence somewhere - maybe Big Ben is the way to go?

tbh, I dont think it made too much difference with two referees. There were times where they were quick to make a decision, but I suppose thats what happens without the use of a video ref. Lets see how it all goes in Round 1, however it wouldnt suprise if coaches starting complaining about it early in the season.

Just on Parra's performance, I thought their defence was quite impressive, especially out wide with Ben Smith and Eric Grothe. Tautai looked pretty good in the centres as well.

One thing was Parra's problem last year was their goal line defence, they would either stand back and let the attack come towards them or rush up too quickly. A lot of the tackles were timed perfectly.

I think they'll need to improve their attack, Finch look lost on occassions, in fact he looked injured, however it looked alright when Keating came off the bench and played in the halves.

Hayne played ordinary at 5/8, tried too much, however Im sure he might do better at another shot, but after last night he's not a 5/8.

I was quite impressed with Mannah, Hauraki, Broderick Wright and jonathon Wright. Does he normally play in the centres?

I agree they should give Jarryd another go.I think it is going to take more than one game for him to get used to his new role, hope Anderson will give him a few more chances, I also think they said that the role he would play would not be a typical 5/8 position,so maybe we will have to give him a chance and see how he goes.

Great to hear about our defence, which last year was rather woeful. Good to see guys like Hauraki,Mannah and Wright play well. If we do manage to make the 8 it will on the back of these young blokes stepping up.

It was a very sloppy game..

Jarryd Hayne didnt play well at 5/8...was a bit better when moved to fullback..He didnt pass when at 6..just kept holding it..not what we need in a 5/8. his kicking game was sh*te aswell..kicked 1 straight to Zammet who ran 60 to score.

Our last play opions were sh*te...twice in the first 10 minutes we gave it to forwards to kick on the last...once Fuifui put up the bomb and the other time Hauraki kicked through the line.

Ben Smith was limping from start to finish. But he did play the 80m. Must just have a permanant limp now.

Eric Grothe just looked lost on the wing IMO...virtually stood next to Ben Smith all game leaving his opposing winger unmarked. Lost the ball a few times as well...will surprise me if he starts on the wing. He stood in front of his centre while the ball was coming along the backline towards him.

I though the fat Number 16 played very well..and he is deceptivly fast. made a good line break. Is a lot fitter than he looks as well. Who is he again?? Should be in the side before Cordoba who did SFA.

The number 19 who came on did well as well in the centres..who was that???He looks a bit like Wagon.

I was a bit worried about the way we scored our tries. First was Jarryd Hayne from dummy half...not really the way u want to see tries scored in a trial where no points were on offer. Second try was Inu diving on a ball a penrith winger fumbled in goal...and the third was Jarryd Hayne picking up a lost ball from Penrith and going 70m to score..he did have a bit of work to do and did it well..

We didn't really create any of those try's by playing good footy.

Defence was very solid..again we looked a bit short on Grothes/Smith's side.

Inu didn't see any ball as Tautai doesn't know how to pass.

Burt played ok a full back and did one of his short drop outs succesfully.

Mateo is a lock and played well

Did anyone else see the small scuffly in the Penrith Black Zone area thing?

FAARRRKKK me.

Eric is doomed if he does and doomed if he doesn't. FFS. He let nothing in, put on some big hits, made a few small errors that he wasn't alone in making in the 80mins of footy played.
Jesus christ.

And Ben Smith limping for 80mins? What game were you people watching? He wasn't limping that I saw at all, and that includes seeing him leave the ground after the game.

Jarryd played just fine at 5/8, he was in everything and seemed to really enjoy that. He also made a few error's, but seriously......

IT WAS A TRIAL GAME PEOPLE. Lets not string them from their nuts based on the experiments last night.

f**k me. I don't know if I can handle being a member on here this year if this is how it is going to be every week.

there was absolutely nothing wrong with Erics game last night, in the first half he didn't drop back after a kick, but in all fairness the sort of critisism from his first game back in the top grade for about 9 months is laughable.
