Good audience figures on Fox for Sunday nights game. This only strengthens Perth's positioning as that slot is ideal for a WA team with it being 4pm KO and a game day in Perth, with a 6pm KO in Sydney and Brisbane. I can see Fox being very keen.
Don't West Coast and Fremantle home games get shunted to the Sunday twilight timeslot in the AFL most weeks.

So crowds will struggle if they are competing with them in the same Timeslot.

10 of the 25 weeks for afl perth clubs were at home on a Sunday afternoon. I doubt they will impact crowds much, different crowds. will make the trains busy though lol

What a waste of effort, over 2700 pages on talk of WA and the NS BEARS, when PNG was always the target, i still reckon West Coast Bears would kill it, they should still persue it and try to land licence no.19, by then no.20 will have NZ2 ready

you say it as if anything that’s ever been said on this website has actually mattered in reality anyway. Lmfao.

The Bears will go anywhere for the NRL bid... but these are their ‘non-negotiables’

Staff Writers from Fox Sports
July 22nd, 2022 11:47 am

The Bears are prepared to move anywhere as part of their bid to become the NRL’s 18th team — but there are some “non-negotiables” they won’t budge on.

Speaking to the Fox League podcast, North Sydney Bears legend Billy Moore opened up on the “very pragmatic model” the club has pitched to the NRL with the belief they can “de-risk the 18th team.”

However Moore, who is on the board of directors, also revealed there are elements that must be guaranteed like the Bears’ colours and two to four games to be played at the iconic North Sydney Oval.

“We’re the Bears — we’ve dropped the North Sydney part,” he said. “Obviously our history is the North Sydney Bears but our 114-year history is one of our big selling points (and) our 220,000 fans.

“We bring to the NRL a very pragmatic model where we’re saying ‘you’ve got 17 (teams), we know you need 18, simple as that, and you need it inside the next three to four years for the next TV rights deal comes into play. We’ve said ‘we want to provide you with a solution.’

“We are pragmatic and we understand our place in the game. We want to be re-admitted and we’ve got these very, very small number of non-negotiables: our colours; our badge; we want somewhere between two to four games at North Sydney Oval — one of those must be against Manly — and we want that the rights of the 18th licence will always sit with the North Sydney Rugby League Football Club.

“But other than that point us in the direction and we will move. No one in Australian sport has done this where we’re saying ‘we will go (wherever) to fix your problem, we will de-risk the 18th team’ because we understand our place. “We want to be the solution, provide the opportunity for the game to grow. We understand we can’t ask for money, we will cannibalise any existing club and we will make sure we grow grassroots, pathways football.

“Where we do that is, tell us what you want, where you need us to go and we will go. I’ll emphasise the word, we will de-risk the 18th franchise.”

It comes after Moore spent time in Perth in the lead-up to State of Origin II amid interest from the Western Australia government to merge with the Bears in a bold bid for the 18th licence.

He also revealed that the Rugby League Commission are fans of the bid given there’s a need for the competition to expand from 17 in 2023 when the Dolphins enter to 18 to avoid a team having a bye every week.
“They like the idea and why wouldn’t you?,” he said.

“We’re not saying we want eight games at North Sydney Oval, we know we can’t do that. We want somewhere between two to four and I can guarantee you everyone of those games will be a massive blockbuster.

“So we’re pragmatic, we understand the future of the game and we want to be a part of that future. Our 220,000 fans want to bolt back onto the game so we’re putting forward our best possible selling point and we have to wait and see.

“But the one thing we do know is that 17 (teams) don’t work, 18 is the future so they need 18.”

While an 18th team is still a long way off being rubber-stamped, Moore believes the successful bid could enter the competition in a few year’s time.

Asked when the Bears could join the NRL Moore said: “2025-2026, somewhere in that zone. “I think what will happen, that will be predicated on what happens with the Dolphins,” he added. “If they find it really difficult next year, (the NRL) will know they might have to slow down expansion, but they will need another team before 2027. Write that in stone.”

Wasn't sure where to put this but couldn't see a Just Bears Thread. Some obvious delusions still happening, the biggest being "the rights of the 18th licence will always sit with the North Sydney Rugby League Football Club." ROFLOL!!!

"and we want that the rights of the 18th licence will always sit with the North Sydney Rugby League Football Club."

and that is why Perth should not consider them any further. Others we could live with, the license must always sit with Perth or we would be back to a Northern Eagles farce in a few years. Good luck in NZ lol

No.. no one should take those bottom-lines.

The Bears could EASILY do what Manly did to them.

What we really need is an expansion team in red & black that's NOTHING to do with Norths, and doesn't have a Bear mascot.. and then it's settled.

(Perth next, then Adelaide or Christchurch in red & black as team 19)

Fortunately we have at least one other bid option for Perth, possibly three. Hopefully they can tick the NRL's boxes and the unrealistic Bears can wallow in the NSW cup and reflect on their stupidity before they get another chance in a decade or two when we look for a 19th club!

As for this comment 'No one in Australian sport has done this where we’re saying ‘we will go (wherever) to fix your problem' , I guess he's never heard of the Swans and Lions? lol. Difference being they actually relocated properly, not just took some games to another city!

Correct, but in hindsight the bears aren't wanting to be northern eagled by perth either..
They went thru it, no one else did, they have every right to pull that card..
But yeah as long as they remain away from NSO or NSW really, if perth somehow fails, and bears get the license to carry on then move them to Adelaide, or NZ etc

Absolute nonsense, for one, the bears are the club, perth will be nothing but a location, so for them the license is basically theirs, if the WA pirates merged with the bears, thats a different story, but just like stgeorge and illawarra, one is top dog... the whole bid will work if they play atleast 10 games in perth, simple stuff.. hell with the amount of away hames in sydney they could rake in money with 12 home games in perth, and use NSO as an Manly home game, make a deal of sorts, a donation, for the dodgy f**ks they were regading the NE merger..

It still looks set to fail to my eyes - and with Norths holding the license, Perth has everything to lose in the worst case scenario.

Even if the NRL stipulates the licence can't be brought back to Sydney, Norths could threaten to move it to Adelaide, Christchurch, heck where-ever if they get fed up with Perth.

If both sides are so weary of EACH OTHER "doing a Manly", then maybe this whole idea is just rotten?

I mean, how can ANY partnership survive, let alone excel when it's a "marriage of convenience" with so much distrust?

Hmm... that scenario sounds familiar....

There is a reason the NRl don't want NS back in. Not engaging the WA fanbase and corporates because they are a sydney club playing in perth means its doomed to failure. Perth can stand on its own, Bears can f**k off to Adelaide or christchurch or Rockhampton that cant sustain an NRL club on its own.

That's easily solved by ensuring the NS LC holds the copyright control over the brand. Sure Perth could in theory dump the Bears brand for something else in years to come but why would they if its working well? Worse case scenario it goes tits up, the club closes its doors, NS LC keep the Bears brand rights, NRL decides what it wants to do with the license. That's their safeguard, it doesnt need them to own the club.

it cant, it wont, it shouldnt. Time for NRL to invite bids for Perth. If Bears want to bid on their own they can, lets see the quality of WA bids alongside theirs.

Lmao this thread should be funny for the next week or so

can’t wait for the epic meltdowns

go bears !
why? Its nothing most of us sensible people predicted would likely happen. In fact I think Great Dane probably stated this would be the outcome on page 1! Getting confirmation from the Bears is good though, we know where they stand and can move on now without them.

Heard Billy Moore plenty of times on ABC radio where he is often guest commentator, trust me the bloke ain`t the sharpest tool in the shed. The idea of having him anywhere near the running of a club would make me run a mile.
