The Bears are prepared to move anywhere as part of their bid to become the NRL’s 18th team — but there are some “non-negotiables” they won’t budge on.
Speaking to the Fox League podcast, North Sydney Bears legend Billy Moore opened up on the “very pragmatic model” the club has pitched to the NRL with the belief they can “de-risk the 18th team.”
However Moore, who is on the board of directors, also revealed there are elements that must be guaranteed like the Bears’ colours and two to four games to be played at the iconic North Sydney Oval.
“We’re the Bears — we’ve dropped the North Sydney part,” he said. “Obviously our history is the North Sydney Bears but our 114-year history is one of our big selling points (and) our 220,000 fans.
“We bring to the NRL a very pragmatic model where we’re saying ‘you’ve got 17 (teams), we know you need 18, simple as that, and you need it inside the next three to four years for the next TV rights deal comes into play. We’ve said ‘we want to provide you with a solution.’
“We are pragmatic and we understand our place in the game. We want to be re-admitted and we’ve got these very, very small number of non-negotiables: our colours; our badge; we want somewhere between two to four games at North Sydney Oval — one of those must be against Manly — and we want that the rights of the 18th licence will always sit with the North Sydney Rugby League Football Club.
“But other than that point us in the direction and we will move. No one in Australian sport has done this where we’re saying ‘we will go (wherever) to fix your problem, we will de-risk the 18th team’ because we understand our place. “We want to be the solution, provide the opportunity for the game to grow. We understand we can’t ask for money, we will cannibalise any existing club and we will make sure we grow grassroots, pathways football.
“Where we do that is, tell us what you want, where you need us to go and we will go. I’ll emphasise the word, we will de-risk the 18th franchise.”
It comes after Moore spent time in Perth in the lead-up to State of Origin II amid interest from the Western Australia government to merge with the Bears in a bold bid for the 18th licence.
He also revealed that the Rugby League Commission are fans of the bid given there’s a need for the competition to expand from 17 in 2023 when the Dolphins enter to 18 to avoid a team having a bye every week.
“They like the idea and why wouldn’t you?,” he said.
“We’re not saying we want eight games at North Sydney Oval, we know we can’t do that. We want somewhere between two to four and I can guarantee you everyone of those games will be a massive blockbuster.
“So we’re pragmatic, we understand the future of the game and we want to be a part of that future. Our 220,000 fans want to bolt back onto the game so we’re putting forward our best possible selling point and we have to wait and see.
“But the one thing we do know is that 17 (teams) don’t work, 18 is the future so they need 18.”
While an 18th team is still a long way off being rubber-stamped, Moore believes the successful bid could enter the competition in a few year’s time.
Asked when the Bears could join the NRL Moore said: “2025-2026, somewhere in that zone. “I think what will happen, that will be predicated on what happens with the Dolphins,” he added. “If they find it really difficult next year, (the NRL) will know they might have to slow down expansion, but they will need another team before 2027. Write that in stone.”
Wasn't sure where to put this but couldn't see a Just Bears Thread. Some obvious delusions still happening, the biggest being "the rights of the 18th licence will always sit with the North Sydney Rugby League Football Club." ROFLOL!!!
