Participation numbers are rubbery as hell. If I trotted AFL participation in all formats out in oh lets say NZ. and claimed there were tens of thousands of participants when there was just a fraction of that in actual players, Id be rightfully laughed out of these forums.

15 years ago there were only 600 AFL players in NZ but after the spectacular success of the Kiwikick program in NZ schools by 2016 there were 35,000 registered players. It must be over 50,000 by now

(The really odd thing, no doubt due to the anti-afl bias of the NZ media, is that a google search for “Kiwi Kick” mainly returns results about a cocktail containing rum, midori and a kiwifruit)
I know. It's why I said it.

Agree about origin as a national event not just an RL one, a bit Melbourne Cuppish.
My strange Brother in law who is prone to make statements like “My family have been Essendon supporters since 1898” watches SOO as his only RL experience each year. He likes the passion and says its the best of the best in a sport he otherwise can’t stand.

Its also susceptible to competing television programming - as demonstrated by the goddamned ratings for every other program in Perth.

Because thats how Oztam choose to publish them. The raw data used to come to us slightly differently, but the average rating is always rounded up to the thousand for publishing.

Already showed the published - and previously linked - the 4100 actual registered league players.

Your point about Auskick might even be true except Touch Football Australia counts program and event participants, school delivered programs, and even f**king volunteers - its numbers could be even more f**king rubbery than anything the AFL produces for Auskick. Like who the f**k counts volunteers - except soccer.

Your problem here is that the 2022 Touch Football Australia Annual Report is like available to be read by all and sundry.

This year the total number fof active adults in AUSTRALIA was 83,451 (64,895 in QLD/NSW alone) and 83,490 juniors (77,389 in QLD/NSW). This leaves 18,556 registered adults and 6,101 juniors for the entire country outside of NSW and QLD. That almost certainly means that these 24,000 folks arent all in WA.

Mine is backed up with decades of data and annual reporting from industry bodies and sporting codes. Your source appears to be your posterior. Yours appears to be based on a "well it cant be true, I dont want it to be" philosophy

In fairness to touch & soccer there's a hell of lot more informal social games than for contact sports like afl etc

Wookie is dropping the tactical nukes

I know one day he’s going to use one of them against me but I’ve got my (nrl) bunker ready to hide in

The fact these numbers aren't shown in regular matches is a pretty good indicator.
Or could it be that they draw fans from across the spectrum of the game, not just for the two clubs involved in a regular nrl game???
I’d question how many people are willing to drop $150-350 for a ticket to a sport they have no interest in. If you’d been to a RL game in perth and seen how much nrl/origin merch the fans are wearing then you might think differently.

Dude I didnt invent the term "theatre goer" as it applies to these things, but it definitely applies here.

This didn’t age well lol

Sage, worth $800 million through 13 mining companies, emerged from the meeting upbeat and ready to start compiling a business model.

"David thinks very highly of Perth, which is good for me," said Sage, who also owns the Perth Glory A-League side.

"We will now go away and quietly do our numbers.

"We are confident the model we've got, which is similar to the Nathan Tinkler model, will make us a front runner."

Elias, meanwhile, reiterated his desire for Ricky Stuart to be the prospective Perth franchise's coach.

Bears updated proposal

Proposal:
Reintroduce the Bears as the 18th commercially viable team and inject 220,000 avid fans and members back into the NRL, whilst also engaging with rural and regional heartland.

Summary:

The Bears national brand have a rich 113-year heritage and heartbeat following of die-hard Rugby League fans. A re-introduction into the NRL will engage the loyal club followers to invest their support back in the NRL after 20 years without a home team. Tribalism runs deep at North Sydney Oval with fans from Mt Isa to Wagga Wagga breathing red and black, with the chance to attract new fans nationwide. With such a strong brand and following, there will be obvious excitement for all Rugby League fans to hear the Bears aim to be in the NRL ranks once again.

This NRL goal has seen the structure of the club change, with the above model and astute group of people ready to deliver the NRL’s greatest story in the last 20 years. All the stakeholders have been considered and the time is now to bring all these passionate, loyal, and absolutely “tribal” fans on the journey.

Proposed on and off field season structure:

1. 24 games – 4-6 at NSO (grass roots tribalism), 12 games away and 6-8 games at regional destinations (Wagga, Tamworth, Dubbo, Coffs Harbour, Central Coast (as examples). The NRL to assist with direction to target large regional areas for Rugby League development.
2. Develop and initiate a clear program for country player pathways.
3. Marketing plan to target 220,000 avid Bears fans to attend games and get involved.
4. Media strategy to reintroduce well-known former playing legends to the Rugby League community.
5. Appointment of key social and cultural leader to shadow and guide players, whilst also having a strong presence in the public and player mentoring.
6. 2-4 players per year/per region to be awarded a scholarship to live in Sydney for 12 months and play football after school to further their Rugby League career.

220,000 avid Bears fans

Seriously?
In their last season they averaged 8,500 people at NSO and a lot of those people are no longer alive
