1. They were already well ahead of us
2. It isn't Shaun's Sharks - if it is they might sail backwards - although not past us
Thats out of the context of my post you were replying too. I was talking about the Sharks with Johnson and them possibly making the finals NEXT YEAR, which hasn't happened. Refer to my post below for PROOF (the one you replied to with your comment above).
If we go to a semi final next year then Kearneys three year process would be a success IMO. If we do not make the semis and have a below par season, then Johnsons departure will be one of the things that Kearney critics will look at. Especially if Shauns Sharks team sails right past us.
They can't be ahead of us if the race hasn't started. Thats a no brainer.

'Shauns sharks, the team Shaun plays for etc etc...' look whatever you want to call it. You should know what I mean. Its very pedantic to get hung up on semantics. What Im trying to say SHOULD be clear. SHOULD be...again, another no brainer.

.

Respectfully I disagree, clearly some teams have much better chances than others - they were better than us last year - we finished 8th and are probably a worse team going into this year - several others have improved...

We often look at a teams player list, coach and a bit of the clubs recent history to get some idea of how a team might go next season. Those factors aren't always reliable as we have seen in the tight and rather unpredictable NRL. Remember when we had the kiwi spine and everyone thought we were going to be a force in 2017...

Like I said before - the Sharks with Shaun, should do well and that can bring on some pressure. Yes he jumped out of a Toyota (us) and into a Ferrari (Sharks) to drive towards next years finals but in the NRL and as you know - we just never know!

Warriors coach Stephen Kearney insists he has no problems with former star halfback Shaun Johnson and praised the Kiwi international's contribution to the Auckland-based NRL club.

Kearney today broke his silence on the Johnson saga, speaking publically for the first time on the events that led to the No 7's bitter exit from the Warriors before joining Cronulla on a three-year deal.

But those hoping Kearney would return fire, after Johnson last week told Sydney reporters that his former club and international coach "didn't like me", were left disappointed.

Kearney did his best not to fan the flames on the ugly public spat which began in late October, as he reluctantly fielded questions about the perceived rift that had developed between him and the Warriors record-holding pointscorer.

The former New Zealand test coach denied he had any issues with his former protégé, who he introduced into the international arena when he handed Johnson his first Kiwis jersey back in 2012.

"I've got no problem with Shaun," said Kearney.

"I heard about that comment on the weekend and I can honestly say, after spending close to 20 test matches working with him and certainly at close quarters over the last two years, and we've got a pretty comprehensive review process at seasons end, with not only myself but other senior management at the club, and I've got an open door in the football area."

Kearney confirmed he first learned that Johnson was unhappy with the state of their working relationship, when the 28-year-old demanded a release from the final year of his million dollar per season contract at a meeting on November 27.

"The first time I heard about that was two weeks ago following a request for a release," he said.

"So it came as news to me but I've been around the business long enough to know that happens. It's unfortunate but it happens and we all move on."

A fortnight before that fateful meeting, upon arriving home after the Kiwis' end-of-year tour of England, Johnson complained to media that he had not heard from anyone at the Warriors about his contract situation, after CEO Cameron George had publically announced the club were in no rush to extend his deal beyond next season.

Kearney did not want to get into the detail around how negotiations between both parties broke down completely, but confirmed he had made an effort to contact Johnson while he was in Britain and explained his plans to help improve his game.

"I rang Shaun whilst he was away on tour with the Kiwis and made it very clear that we were very committed to Shaun in 2019.

"He had a contract with the club, however I was going to help him be better at his job. I was committed to making sure that that happened, but what's transpired has transpired.

"Shaun requested a release and after some careful thought we didn't want to keep a guy here who didn't want to be here.

"In terms of how much say [Kearney had], I'm not going to go into that."

Kearney paid tribute to Johnson's work over eight seasons at the Warriors and said the former Golden Boot winner should be remembered as one of the club's great servants.

"It's really important that we remind ourselves of the contribution that he made to our footy club," he said.

"He played 162 games and has provided a great deal of highlights to our members and fans and that shouldn't be forgotten.

"Amongst all of the carry on that's been out there, that should be remembered, and it's really important we do that. And again, as a footy club, we wish him well."

When asked how he thought Johnson would go slotting into the Sharks' halves under Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan, Kearney was optimistic, saying: "I think he'll do a great job there."

Johnson's exit has left the Warriors with a large hole to fill in their roster and the club has been linked with numerous potential replacement halves.

They remain in a strong position to recruit another marquee playmaker, or could instead buy two or three medium-priced players to fill other positions, and look to develop and test drive their quartet of young emerging halves, Chanel Harris-Tavita, Adam Keighran, Paul Turner, and Hayze Perham.

"That's a process that we're working through," said Kearney.

"The next recruitment decision that we make, they're really important ones, and we're not going to be panicked into making any rash decisions."

He remains confident that a rookie half, operating together with veteran five-eighth Blake Green, captain and fullback Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, and hooker Issac Luke, can help the Warriors become title contenders next year.

"I think the young guys certainly have got an opportunity to be able to do that.

"It's not all placed at their feet, they've got some pretty handy people around them."

The Warriors will look to test out a variety of halves combinations in two pre-season trial games against Melbourne at Geelong on February 22 and Wests Tigers in Whangarei on March 2.

They open their NRL campaign with a round-one home match against Canterbury on March 16.

They might be sailing West if they can't get a major sponsor, cop a fine for salary cap breach and go bankrupt.

Feels like the high road.

But.....

Makes SJ look a little bad with Kearney saying he was in touch while in the UK and wanting to help him improve and SJ comments on coach not liking him.

... And SJ saying no one at the club had even contacted him. Anyway, we've been over this way too much, moving on etc..

Head coach Stephen Kearney has defended the Warriors' culture after former halfback Shaun Johnson complained he was left out of the loop by management while raving about the inclusive leadership style at his new club Cronulla.

After gaining a release from the final year of his million dollar Warriors contract and joining the Sharks on a three-year deal, Johnson last week told Sydney media he had been kept in the dark regarding the playing roster at his former club.

The Kiwi international also spoke with excitement about the prospect of contributing to the Sharks collective leadership, after having been left out of the Warriors senior players group this season.

Speaking publicly today for the first time since Johnson's departure, Kearney was confident the vast majority of his squad felt comfortable with their level of input into team decisions and other matters that impact the wider club.

"Part of our review process at the end of the year, in which I and other senior management personnel sit down with the players and get feedback, 99.9 percent said that it was a very inclusive contract where every voice matters in the footy club," said Kearney.

"That's one person's perception I guess, but we're happy with our culture.

"We've taken some pretty significant changes over the course of the last 12-18 months in terms of our culture and that's part of it."

"I hadn't had a conversation like that at the Warriors for the last few years. I'd been left out of those conversations.

"So to come here and be brought in and told 'you're going to be a in key position for us, you need to know what is going on around you', I was like 'ahh — thank you'."

The 162-game veteran was also enthusiastic about playing his part in helping to lead the Sharks, alongside co-captains Paul Gallen and Wade Graham, and the rest of his new teammates.

"I'm still in awe of the experience the Cronulla Sharks have within their playing group. I was thinking about the leadership group, and you're like, well who do you actually put in it? Johnson told the Daily Telegraph.

"You've got so many players that have played so many big games for their country, origins, grand finals, whatever it is, that it can be so important to a side.

"Talking to them over the last few days, everyone just contributes which is really exciting. I'll just be looking to do the same."

Green echoed Kearney's sentiments in paying tribute to Johnson's eight seasons at Mt Smart Stadium and the positive impact he has had on promoting rugby league in New Zealand.

"He's been a really big part of this club. He's obviously been a huge part in encouraging young kids in this country to put on a pair of footy boots.

"As a mate, I'm really proud of what he's done and the role he's played for our club and the game.

"People move clubs, that's what happens. I've moved them plenty of times. So I wish him all the best."

Despite their differences in opinion, Kearney too, remains open to clearing the air with Johnson at some point if the opportunity arises.

"We've been pretty busy here [training]," he said. "It may present itself."

Some telling points in the above article.
I think SJ is spinning a "poor Shaun" message to the media.
Maybe he had a guilty conscience about his lack of effort of late.
This whole issue wouldn't have arisen had he been giving 100% to the club.

Yep, and brand SJ has more social media followers than brand SK, so that poor Shaun message will be/is getting some traction

He is acting like the burnt/dumped ex-lover.
Everything is so much better in his new fresh relationship.

The club seems to be taking the higher moral ground, which seems to be part of the new culture. Showing as much respect as they can.

Flanagan's reign at Cronulla is teetering... pretty murky cast of characters at that club
