Warriors hit jackpot in Roto-Vegas clash
IN the dress rehearsal of their 2011 season-opening clash against Parramatta, the Warriors drew first blood yesterday, beating the Eels 24-4 in a preseason friendly in front of close to 9000 fans at Rotorua's International Stadium.
The two sides will meet in round one at Eden Park in Auckland on March 12 and if yesterday's trial match was anything to go by, Warriors fans would be well advised to book their tickets now.
Of course, while it might feel good to land the first blow, the reality is that trial games are just that an opportunity to try combinations and different game plans. Winning, for once at least, is secondary.
Even so, for the Warriors this was a performance to be fairly happy with.
In a one-sided first half, the hosts ran in tries to Manu Vatuvei and new recruit Krisnan Inu before the Eels manage to get across the line, with Taniela Lasalo bashing his way over eight minutes before the break.
Leading 8-4, the Warriors picked upped their intensity a notch in the second half and three further tries two of them to electric young wing Glen Fisiiahi ensured a comfortable victory, much to the delight of the Rotorua locals.
"There are a lot of good things we can take out of this game," a satisfied Warriors coach Ivan Cleary said.
"I thought we were pretty patient, ball control was a lot better than last week but there are a few things we can fix up. All in all, it was a good game.
"We've certainly got some competition for places, which is good.
"In the last two weeks I've actually learnt a lot about where we are at and what we need to concentrate on in the next few weeks."
In the back of Cleary's mind is his side's date in mid March with the Eels when competition points are up for grabs.
But despite the fact the Stephen Kearney-coached Eels would have been using yesterday's trial to scope out their rivals for weaknesses, the Warriors coach said he managed to pick up a few titbits of his own.
"Actually, that [thinking about round one] had no bearing at all on what we did today but you probably do learn a little bit about what they've worked on," he said.
"With Steve coming in as the new coach there was always going to be some changes there.
"It will also be a completely different looking two teams that run out on to Eden Park."
With just under a month to go before the season proper begins, Cleary said he had plenty of time left to decide on his starting side for the Eden Park fixture.
Twenty-year-old Fisiiahi who last week against the Knights in Greymouth also scored a double is one player the coach conceded was doing everything he could to push his case for the senior side.
"Glen's certainly a talent and he's doing everything he can to play in the NRL," he said. "He's been good but he's still pretty green. But he certainly gets you excited when he gets the ball in space."
Speaking of wingers, yesterday's hit-out also doubled as a return to the field for Warriors cult-hero Manu "The Beast" Vatuvei, who broke his right arm during the Kiwis' Four Nations campaign last year.
A sleek-looking Vatuvei played for the opening 54 minutes before limping somewhat gingerly from the field.
He later dismissed concerns of a possible hip injury but revealed he was in the shape of his career and was 3kg lighter than his regular weight of 112kg something sure to strike fear into the hearts of the other 15 NRL sides.
"This is the fittest I've been this early in the season. It was a real goal of mine to come back this year in good shape," he said.
Cleary, not one prone to exaggeration, said he was rapt with the performance of his superstar.
"I thought Manu was really good, actually. That was probably the best first game I have seen him have.
"He's had a pretty good preseason and he's in pretty good shape so I'm glad he's on our team at the moment.
"This is probably the lightest he's been at this stage of the year so hats off to him.
"It's tough for him at the best of times and he's just coming back from a broken arm where he hasn't been mobile for a while. It just shows how much he's matured."
The Warriors will head to Whangarei next weekend where they take on Queensland Cup side Burleigh.
Cleary said he hoped for a more disciplined effort from his side after they gave away a raft of penalties.
Yesterday's trial also doubled as the Parramatta debut for playmaker Brad Murray.
The former Roosters youngster, who has been implicated in the NRL's betting scandal after he was filmed on CCTV placing a bet on last season's controversial match between the Cowboys and Bulldogs in round 24, came on midway through the second half and played until the end.
