Wayne Bennett and future coach talk

Yeah Smiths comments to be posted here please? Haven't heard anything from the players yet.

Getting away from bashing him. Who coaches is next?

I love Stone but not a %100 sold. However I know players will play for him.
And strong rumors about Garth Brennan making a return? He's won a couple premise ups with penrith a lower grades and is a knight through and through.

It's between them both for me. If I was to make a choice I want Stoney given a good chance that he deserves.

As a Parramatta supporter living in Newcastle I will try to offer a neutral viewpoint.
Firstly I think Wayne Bennett is vastly overrated as a coach. Sure his record is fabulous but for 21 years as Broncos coach he had virtual carte blanche to the best footballers north of the Tweed. He would have had to have been a complete twit NOT to have won 6 comps and probably should have won more.
Even at St George he had 2009 parcelled up but when Parra and Brisbane turned up the heat he didn't have the answers. As a coach I think Newcastle was never a good fit and I believe the Knights will be better for his departure.
But to question the man's quality as a human being is both disingenious and beside the point. He hasn't left Newcastle in the lurch...this season has long been a write-off.
He has commuted from Brisbane throughout his tenure which some may say questions his commitment to the district; rather I think it confirms his dedication to his family's stability, particularly having to cater and care for a handicapped son.
I'll be honest , I allowed my initial view of the man be coloured by my criticism of him as a coach. But having met him at a local BMW promo , having seen his "Australian Story" episode , and read his biography , I respect him as a human being.
I am not a Wayne Bennett apologist , I just believe emotion and fact are two separate issues. And as I said , Newcastle are better off without him

Thanks mate, nice summary

I feel pretty much the same way. Its easy to attack the man for "dudding the club" etc but the reality is this season has probably taken a bigger toll on the man than any of us can understand. It seems he has come to the realisation that what needs fixing at our club is something that he cant do. Id much prefer for him to leave and give us a chance to find a coach capable of turning things around rather than him staying on for another year and getting nowhere

What were Jeremy Smith's comments guys? I'm curious. When Jeremy speaks I listen!

Experienced Knights forward Jeremy Smith said last night none of the players saw it coming.

?I?m pretty shocked. I think we all are,? Smith said.

?It left a pretty empty feeling when he told us because none of us saw it coming and I?m still a bit rattled to be honest.

?I thought after the season we?ve had, he would have been like us and looking for redemption next year but it?s not to be I guess. What can you do??

Hey no worries , the only problem I have with it all is that this didn't happen two weeks ago , when any destabilising effect would have handed us a win!!!!

It would so good to win the premiership next year to prove Wayne wrong (about it needing years to fix us up). But everyone would still say it was because if him.

If he had a 4 year plan when he came here, he could've just signed a 1 year deal and seen out that initial contract time frame. That would've proved to me it wasn't just about money.

I am just feeling so numb at the moment. How will we go this week and the rest of the year?
It's too late for the guys to want to win for Wayne (win the premiership anyway) and he's probably given them the feeling that they're not good enough.

He probably has a very good relationship with the players, but I really wonder how they will take this.

We simply can't sit around waiting for Bennett to sign somewhere and see what players are going to go with him.

We need someone to address the players and say that if anyone has any intention of leaving at the end of the year we'll release you right now. If not you won't be given a release for next year under any circumstances if you come wanting one later in the year.

We need to know what the squad will be like asap so potential coaches will know what they're dealing with.

As soon as he said it was a 5 year job , he was going surely he has 2 -3 years max left coaching

Also interesting to see St George say they have him, didn't the roosters say the same thing then he went to us? So if the same case is true then back home he goes to Broncos

Knights: Stars could follow Bennett

Newcastle chief executive Matt Gidley admits there's a risk star players could follow departing coach Wayne Bennett out of the NRL club, but he has faith a promising band of local juniors will form the Knights' future.

Fullback Darius Boyd has a clause in his contract that says he can leave the Knights should Bennett no longer be in charge, with reports suggesting the Queensland and Test representative is next to no chance of remaining in Newcastle next season.
Alongside Boyd, representative forwards Jeremy Smith and Beau Scott also won a premiership under Bennett at St George Illawarra in 2010, and all share a close bond with the super coach.

Aside from losing the best coach in the business, Bennett's exit means the Knights have also lost their No.1 recruiting tool, which doesn't bode well for a club already on its knees following the collapse of Nathan Tinkler's ownership.

Embattled boss Gidley says he isn't immediately concerned about the prospect of players following Bennett, but concedes it's an issue he must address in coming weeks.

"I'm not concerned at this stage but I guess it's a risk," Gidley said on Sky Sports Radio.

"Wayne's got a great relationship with a lot of those players (Boyd, Smith, Scott).
"I think we'll certainly establish that over the coming weeks.
"We've still got a little bit of work to do (on roster).
"The vast majority of our squad's settled for 2015 but we still have a little bit of work to do.
"That'll take shape over the next month or two."

Newcastle are coming first in the National Youth Competition and Gidley says the young players coming through are the priority - even if that means some short-term pain.

"Our greatest competitive advantage has always been our local juniors," he said.
"Our most successful years on the field have seen the team predominantly made up of locally developed boys and we will always have a bias towards our local kids.
"Moving them up to NRL level will take some time but we're comfortable with that position."

To help that process along, Gidley has indicated the Knights are looking for a coach familiar with the Newcastle area.
He confirmed former Knights coach and current assistant Rick Stone is a leading candidate to take over the reins from Bennett, as is highly rated Penrith reserve grade mentor Garth Brennan - who formerly coached and played in Newcastle.

With the NRL temporarily in charge of the club, an interim board featuring two NRL representatives, Gidley and Chairman Paul Harragon will decide on a new coach.
"Ideally, we want to make an appointment as quickly as possible but it's important we go through the process and find the right candidate," said Gidley.

^ well, we all knew it was money related at the end of the day didn't we? He would have won more admirers from the decision by being up front about it. He has disabled children and he was offered a lot less than what he signed up for under Tinkler. He should have just said that...not blamed the players...

So the NRL wanted Wayne to be a big part of Newcastle's future but not enough to tip in some money.

Sounds about right.

Bellamy is the best coach I have seen. he has won a comp in spite every obstacle placed in front of him. The 2012 title was all the proof you need of how good he is. I still would not write the Storm off. I believe come the finals they will be the silent assassins in waiting.

He also has the best spine the game has ever seen as his disposal and for a long time had a side significantly over the cap.

I'm questionable about Bellamy's coaching ability and I'm also not sure what legacy he's going to leave with the wrestling, chicken wing, grapple, etc.

Put Craig on an even playing field and lets see how much of his roster he actually would have kept over that era and what he actually would have won.

The NRL probably offered him what he was worth considering his record here, if other clubs want to pay overs good on them

Indeed. And the Storm won the GF 2 years after being caught cheating, the same amount of time the Bulldogs took to win a GF after they got caught. Basically winning with the nucleus of a team put together cheating.

We all saw how Bellamy went as a SOO coach. Didnt go down too well did he?
