West Coast Pirates Bid News

I don't think this affects the WA bid at all. The Bears need another team to be ready - I can't see them entering only one team. Now its turned into a 2 team contest between WA and CQLD and WA are the favourites. If they are going with a safe bet heartland area in the Central Coast, I'd be surprised if they didn't go for WA as a higher risk/reward strategy. That last sentence is just my opinion, but based on 1 year of noting all expansionary comments by the NRL, where the Bears AND Reds have been constantly referred to. Certainly Ipswich, competing with the Bears for the hearland bid, is out of the race - Annesley didn't even rate them a mention.

Thanks Champ.

100% agree.

Imo the decision has 95% been made. Bears and Reds will be in for 2013.

Seems that way doesn't it?

I think they have been leaning that way for the majority of the past few months but lately its gone that extra step.

It's exactly the same thing, unless youre saying Sayer is lying about what Annesley said?

not suggesting he's lying but I have learnt to take third party quotes with a pinch of salt. Maybe he said "your membership numbers are superior to the other bids" and that has become what Sayer interpreted?

Anyway mute point as I agree there will be two teams and barring some very out of left field event it will be Reds and Bears.

NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley to describe the bid as "superior" to rival claims

Mortgage House managing director Ken Sayer said..........................

not exactly the same thing!

A quote from the Daily Telegraph isn't exactly relaiable. A person quoting someone else in a quote in the Daily Telegraph.... even less reliable.. ;-)

Daily tele quotes are reliable, the spin the journalist throws around those quotes aren't or the quotes the tele leaves out.

As a side note (while on the subject of Anneslly). I assume he will no longer be the COO of the NRL when he takes up office as the Member for Miranda in March? Would that be correct?

Correct. Assuming he wins in his electorate.

Graham Annesly gets how many votes in regards to expansion? 0

Now of course supposing the quote is even true he would have insight but the bids have no yet even been tabled so the judgement is made on limited bid information.

In actual fact in a simple Bid regard I would agree that the Bears are clearly the strongest Big BUT this is not going to be as simple as that, something most would agree here.

Calling this a 'two horse race' when in actual fact only a while ago most of the NSW Clubs opposed the Bears is somewhat premature. Only time will tell who will cross the line first (and second) and that is remembering that 'line' might well be slightly different for each bid.

He would have 10x more idea/information/insight into all the bids (and what stage theyre at) as a whole than anybody on this forum.

In saying that, this isnt new information. The CC Bears bid appears to be much further along than any of the others.

The exciting thing for CC Bears supporters and the bid is that someone as high up in the NRL and in the know as Annesley has labelled the bid superior.

Most of Sydney clubs are for the Bears, only one Sydney Club is against the Bears.

1 NZ club is against the Reds

2 SEQ clubs are against Ipswich

1 NQ club against CQ

The NRL are as one on this, in fact G Annesley was one of the more sceptical re the Bears going back 1 year! The quote is true. You're right that the Bears bid had to be/is stronger than other bids to be succesful. What's frustrating the NRL is that the others are so far behind. And thats no-ones fault, just the Bears have been at this for 10 years so they should have worked out the way to go re approaching sponsors, a business model, dealing with the NRL etc etc

The Clubs opposition is the biggest furfey of the year. As previously mentioned on many posts, what happened at Byron Bay was that there was a warmer attitude to expansion than in the past, with most clubs hoping to wait till 2015. 2 strongly against the Bears, 2 strongly against Ipswich, 1 mildly against CQLD and 1 mildly against WA. It was misreported that most NSW clubs opposed the Central Coast. People there laughed at the article you referred to. And given Newcastle's news today, strike down 1 opponent against the Bears.

As News and the NRL select the IC commissioners, and expansion will be voted on by the IC and an NRL committtee that will include D Gallop and probably the CFO, the interests of the game, not an individual club is the criteria. Am sure we all agree thats great. The NRL are aiming for 2013 or at worst 2014 for expansion. The WA Reds would be favourites for the 18th license, especially if they can get it ready for 2013. If 2014, CQLD come back into the frame.

A sensible poster such as yourself should know that the opinions of a few self interested clubs (read: Manly) are entirely irrelevant to what the IC will decide. Nobody cares what clubs think and nor should they. The clubs will almost always go for more money in the short term.
