To be fair, from an Australian perspective, Super Rugby mustn't be a very attractive prospect - 80 minutes of stop-start crap, then (if the opposition is from across the ditch) 9 out of 10 times the NZ team wins.

Rugby is bigger than league in perth

How many fans will flock to Perth Oval to support a Perth-based NRL club?

Less than 7k turned up to Perth Oval to watch the Force play against the Rebels (6,885) and Pasifika (6,497). That's without competition from the NRL. Crowds aren't much better for the Queensland Reds in Brisbane and Townsville, but they've got competition from the NRL.

Surely an NRL club in Perth should be able to average 12k or more?

Perth won't average 10k

Perth won't average 10k

Are you talking long-term or short-term?

I think the excitement of having a new team will lead to the club generating strong crowds of 15k or more in its first few seasons. Whether the club is able to maintain strong attendances will depend on how the team performs on the field. If the club is abysmal on the field and spends its first few seasons at the foot of the ladder, then its average could dip below 10k. Conversely, if on-field results are strong then it could average 15k or more.

Unfortunately, we won't know until the team is up and running.

I think a lot will depend on how the Eagles and Dockers go. At the moment they're struggling. Now is the perfect time to add a team in Perth and provide it with a strong roster. The problem is the probability of a team from Perth recruiting a strong roster in today's landscape is very low. Especially at short notice. My guess is it will struggle like the Dolphins to recruit big name players.

Might actually be the opposite, if you are looking to earn a million dollar contract, but can't get ahead of the players at your club, look at souths, penrith roosters, brisbane, these clubs have multiple stars in the same team, a guy like jerome luai could leave penrith and move to perf then demand that 1.2 mill to be the marqee half... unproven team with lotsa money, sounds like the dolphins this season, problem with them, was the last expansion was the titans and they were seen as abit if a failure, so why jump your ship to test your value at a new franchise, now that the dolphins look the goods, other expansion areas will probably dismiss that trend

Perth will avg 15k overall over its first decade
12-15k in poor years
15-18k in good years

you all underestimate how may rugby league fans there are over here.

There are plenty of people from Brisbane, Sydney and New Zealand living in Perth. They'll definitely help boost the fanbase of a Perth team. Whether their presence leads to the club averaging 15k over its first five years is unknown. There's more rugby league fans on the Gold Coast than Perth, yet their attendances are often below 15k at a superior stadium.

A lot will depend on how well run and resourced the club is. Perth people get behind their clubs if they are well run. Nrl has huge potential here if the club is run right and is competitive. Our avg would be helped by stadium capacity increase to 25k. Theres3 or 4 clubs who we could sell out against, a bigger stadium would bring the avg up for those big games,

Tbf Gold Coast avg’d over 20k for first years and only dropped off due to club being poorly run.

Any bid hoping to rely on game day revenue will fail. After all these years still in needed of a backer..

Can't wait for AFL Red to whinge and blame everthing under the sun if the proposed Perth team don't get 12k a game.

All from the comfort of his fumbleball stadium seat.

In term of player participation - Rugby is now but that wasn't always the case and would reverse very quickly with the right pathways available for players 15-20.

In terms of fans League is bigger. The origin game smashed the Wallabies the other year in attendance.

By what metric is NRL bigger?!

What is the bid team doing about the upgrade? Any effort at all?

Weak as piss if not.
They’re doing a lot, or maybe nothing, no one knows, it’s all very behind doors at the moment.
Best chance of getting wa govt to fork out $100mill though is for the nrl to demand it as a condition of a license like afl did in tassie.

..& when teams having losing seasons?! Same strategy which made titans come unstuck
That’s why you set your business case at worse case scenario, not best. Business 101. Sadly some chook raffle cowboys running nrl clubs seem to struggle with this basic concept.
not to mention the nrl grant wasn’t $5mill above salary cap in 2015!
