2nd worst name in Australian sporting history. The Melbourne Demons will forever hold the top spot. Pirates? Seriously? With the pirate skull and swords in the logo. That's not kid friendly, it will scare them if anything. Also west coast? Why are they copying the AFL? What's wrong with Perth Reds? It's perfect.

You are a deluded fool if you think the name is the second worst in Australian sport. They are not copying the AFL for f**ks sake

Do the people of WA refer to themselves as living on the "West Coast"? I'd be shocked if they did. I always assumed they would refer to themselves as West Australian or from Perth. Not from "the West Coast".
Yes we do. Maybe not as much as 'Perth' but it is there

Yep, because knights are so Australian and emblematic of the Hunter region, and Steelers is in no way American...

Knights - Play on the name of the town, newCASTLE.

Steelers - Wollongong/Illawarra region is big steelworks region.

How can you not understand he was simply stating he preferred there to be some relevance to the name or region?

West Coast Pirates doesn't really do this.

RL is built on tribalism. Western Australia is viewed as outsiders. Giving the team a name that provides the view of outsiders raiding in take what they want at the dislike of the locals (east coast folk). This is the perfect type of name for an expansion team. Read in to that what you will

Love It!!!

Finally a team name and logo I really love. The best team name in Australia. Colours are fantastic too. Hope the jersey is designed with no white in it and with a big V on the front and then everything would be perfect.

If I lived in Perth I would most definitely be a massive supporter.

In years to come the kids support will be massive and will create rust on supporters. The marketing of this team is going to be huge and easily will become the envy of all the other NRL teams in the comp.

Oh and Perth Red, how about changing your name to West Coast Pirate?

P.S.
If you think about it, I'm sure that when the Balmain Tigers were first created, there would of been many old timers nay saying them too. I mean what the f**k has a Tiger got to do with anything in Balmain, right? So for most of you drop kicks that are simply just old fart haters out there....Suck it!!!

I am so keen for this team to get in.
like, i was pro perth reds. legit. they should never have been booted.
the TV timelot alone makes too much sense.

but when you add pirates into the mix. with all their pirateness...all the play on words, puns and potential for pirate ships, wenches and loony fans in patches with swords...

i cant wait.

And considering there is lots of gold on the west coast and Pirates are treasure hunters the name I think is very relevant, maybe i'm clutching at straws but i'd much prefer the name over something like the kookaburras or quokkas.

Fuggen stupid name that has no association with the west coast of Australia at all.
Unless they are talking about DVD pirates.

All the great things there and they pick that?

Bad or even worse than the titans if that is at all possible.
If they were on the west coast of Jamaica then yeah great name.

Why not call them the Kimberleys or the Kimbies for short? Who cares what the name is, just get a team up and running over there.

I agree the name Pirates has little to do with anything WA except perhaps the Hancocks, Alan Bond and the Americas Cup and I also agree that the Titans is one of the most inappropriate names in Australian sporting history PLUS I am an old fart but you know what? ... I don't care, the name or the even the friggin' owner don't make the club ... it's all about the players and the fans. Bring on the Pirates!

Don't like it.

What ever. Make it cool and not cheesy and it will be pretty cool.

It is spelled out in the release as to why they went with West Coast not Perth. They dont want to limit their support to Perth but the whole West Coast. Great Idea !

Why would someone from say Fremantle or Broome support a Perth team?

Is there anyone from Perth/WA who dislikes the West Coast name? I ask because i'm not sure if it is popular with people over here. I know personally that I've always told people I live on the West Coast whenever I was over East even in NZ as a lot of people don't know where Perth is I always just said the West Coast of Australia. I think the name is appropriate considering they want to represent more than just Perth and it at the very least is a term people from WA actually use. It would be another thing using a name that no one uses, for example the 'West Side' Pirates. WA just doesn't roll off the tongue well for me and Western is too vague especially with the Wests Tigers now in the competition and the western corridor bid in the picture.
