Unveiled ... the proposed team's logo.
THEY are still a mere twinkle in the eye of the ARL Commission, yet the Western Australian Rugby League still generated some interest yesterday when it launched its logo and revealed a brand new identity: the West Coast Pirates.
The quips about one-eyed supporters and the like came quickly, yet the bid team's chief executive John Sackson maintained a more serious decorum when he addressed the future of one of the potential new NRL teams. ''Like all the other contenders, we're in a bit of a holding pattern,'' Sackson told the Herald, after announcing the new logo and moniker. ''Everything is hinging on the commission's strategic vision for the game, and that vision is hinging on the TV deal. Once that TV deal is done and dusted, it will put them in a better position to articulate with more clarity [their position].''
The departure of ARLC chief executive David Gallop had clouded the expansion landscape slightly; the commission is yet to truly declare its hand on the subject. But Sackson, along with his chairman Richard Campbell, have still been active. They held a conference call with acting ARLC chief executive Shane Mattiske and the director of league integration and development, Andrew Hill, last week. Yesterday's announcement also illustrated officials at the WARL were ploughing ahead with their bid.
Sackson said market research was carried out that showed that while many people in the state had a positive affinity with the old Reds moniker, many others did not. ''We see this as an exciting brand,'' he said.
They decided against using Perth because they did want to limit the club's reach. ''This team, should we get the opportunity to enter an NRL team, will be based out of Perth but it will be representing Western Australia,'' Sackson said.
