Don't mind west coast, having coast in it links with the pirate thing and the sea. Only tenuous link with wa and pirates would be the Batavia mutiny.

I preferred the reds but I can live with pirates and the merch sales are going to be through the roof. Logo is going to look sick on my boat!

Thanks for the red beard idea!

As an adult, and I know I'm expressing a minority opinion here, the name really doesn't mean a lot.

It does take a little time to shift away from 'reds' due to it being the sticking point for a few years. But I'll manage hey....

Thinking about my boy who will be 4 years old in 2015, he'll love dressing up as a pirate when I get him a season ticket.

It's a lot easier for him to dres up as a pirate than an Eel or a Tiger.

Got no idea how one dresses up as a Storm, maybe like a certain QLD women and piss your pants......

Just because America did club names first doesn't make everything that follows american! My 8 year old nephew loves the name and has already been hassling me about a new ball, cap and sword!

What's American about pirates? The original pirates were English and plundered Spanish gold around the Caribbean.

Ancient Greeks, Persians, Egyptians, Carthaginians, etc. Poms were making rafts while these blokes pillaged the high seas.

The Mutiny or Mutineers may have been a good name but probably too complicated for the Kids. Mutiny could have played well into Western Australia's sense of independence and secession, plays an Us against Them mentality.

I hated the idea of the Brisbane Buccaneers. Pirates are campy/comical as a theme.

That said -

The WEST COAST PIRATES as a name actually fits/works. Plus the colours are right and I even like the logo.

And when I think about this list of sports club brands in WA from a marketing perspective -

WEST COAST EAGLES
FREMANTLE DOCKERS
PERTH WILDCATS
WESTERN WARRIORS
PERTH SCORCHERS
PERTH GLORY
WESTERN FORCE

I'd actually suggest that WCP is better than most of them and is in the top 2 at least, if not number 1 outright.

I just hope they treat the pirate aspect seriously. Treat it like the sacred iconography that it truly is.

PerthRed, just change it to captain perth or red pirate or captain red or perth pirate.

As for the the west coast pirates, it's a meh name but the strengths of the bid have been highlighted before when it was wa reds, nothing really changes therefore. Just the name.
