Did you know WA has two very famous Pirates?
Capt Black Jack Anderson was a scallywag who plundered ships along the Sth Coast in 1830,s. Living in a cave in Black Jack's Bay he spent a decade robbing ships and stealing women!

Even more famous was Capt William Dampier. Famous for exploring WA's Northen coastline he was also a pirate! Licensed by the British Govt to rob and plunder foreign ships he amassed quite a booty!

Thanks for the background - hadn't heard of the first bloke, and had heard of Dampier but didn't know he was a pirate!

Dampier was a privateer. Big difference.

A privateer is a chartered private ship by governments to act on their behalf - no different to Australia hiring private security guards in Iraq today. Privateers have to adhere to rules and laws - sometimes they are given a mandate to reek chaos, but they are NOT pirates.

A pirate is a criminal, a thief, answering to no one.

Not really, both do the same thing, one under mandate from law, one outside the law. A terrorist and soldier may both still be murderers.

An interesting opinion piece on the new name:

Last week two new football clubs revealed their name, logo and colours.
The West Sydney Wanderers will make their A-League debut later this year, while the WARL backed West Coast Pirates are odds-on to join the expanded NRL in 2015.
Two teams, two completely different brands. One attempts to be fresh and edgy; the other is staid and proper, at pains to prove it’s not another FFA flash-in-the pan franchise. One was sprung as a surprise; the other slowly teased out at public fan forums. One turns its back on the code’s local history and the stain of Super League; the other hangs its hat on a hundred year narrative. The Wanderers’ sure-footed heritage look seems to have struck a chord. What of the Pirates’ more fierce and flashy ensign?

In regards to the naming of Perth or West Coast, the WARL has some strategic initiatives to create RL hubs in Goldfields, Pilbara and SW. They definately want the NRL club to represent the whole state, I think it is a good thing not being called Perth.

I think the angst is on the Pirates name, rather than West Coast.

don't see why, it's unique to Australian sport, it's ultra marketable and it has a WA connection. Only critiscm I can have is that the fans weren't involved in the decision.

The article is right. The logo belongs on the cover of a preteen kids video game. Awful just awful.
