Western Corridor NRL bid

Is there even an Official bid yet? Has anyone confrirmed it from within the bid team? Hopefully they're just getting things right for a big announcment soon. In saying that I still think it will be CC and Perth but hopefully the NRL more or less tells them they are in in 2017 if they can achieve set goals, they then have a few years to work on it. Same thing for Wellington, work with the NZRL to get a bid set up.

The only issue is, will the team represent more than just Ipswich, and if not would it gain enough support? Ipswich may be a growing area, but it's still way smaller than the Gold Coast and considering the Titans are going well on the field you'd have to say their crowds and the whispers about finances etc are a worry. I don't see how people in Logan or Toowoomba are going to jump to back a team based in Ipswich and playing at Lang Park. A few people in Toowoomba might go because it's a bit closer and other people in Brisbane might go because it's an extra game of footy at Lang Park, but I can't see people from Logan or Toowoomba having a huge interest in an Ipswich team, especially Logan, it's in Brisbane essentially. Calling them the Western Jets is a bit of a nothing, generic name and would hardly encompass Logan. But Ipswich is perhaps too specific. Maybe they need to consider South Queensland again. That would be interesting, having Brisbane, South Queensland and Gold Coast all back in the comp. It would be like 1995 again.

I think people are worrying too much about the name. What RL fans in Brisbane will know is that there is a second option for them to follow. A team which has a history in the QRL. A team where their season tickets/memberships will hopefully give them a vote in the running of the club. Etc.

Everyone loves an underdog, if the Jets play this right (creating a Brisbane-based silver-tails vs fibros rivalry) they could do very well. Just look at how many Cowboys fans there are around SEQ, and that’s from a criminally under-performing team that has won sfa and is further away from Brisbane than Sydney is...

Actually I've thought of a great name for them anyway.

GWB

Greater Western Brisbane.

The nickname could be the date-rapists.

Why not just call them the Jets like the dogs were a few years a go and play them out of Ippy and bigger games at Suncorp

Exactly, half the people here laugh at the GWS side and have used the - based in Blacktown playing out of Homebush - as one of the reasons for failure.

Playing a team out of Suncorp called, Ipswich expecting to unite and be embraced by the Logan/Ipswich/Toowomba/GDR/West Brisbane population is a little much...? :?

Ipswich at Suncorp would work but only because the Ipswich rail line goes directly to Suncorp. They'd be wanting their own Skilled Park further down the track though.

It's a pretty fair trip to the city from Ipswich, even on the train from Ipswich Central to Milton. I've only done that trip once but from memory it was between half an hour and an hour. Certainly not far for people used to commuting and those keen enough to travel but it's almost like expecting the Titans to play at Lang Park. I think a second Brisbane team should play out of Lang Park, but this proposal isn't really for a second Brisbane team.

By train, an hour to Milton from Ipswich?

Centre of Brisbane to Ipswich is 45 minutes with no traffic, but an hour 'normally' by road. A smash and name a time.

Less about the time, more about the attitude, think Geelong and Melbourne, which i'd quess are also about an hour away from each other?

It is 45mins from the Centre of Brisbane to the Gold Coast (driving). I haven't wanted to get a train down there to see the Titans or Broncos ever! Used to do it for the INDY but at least that was a whole day and there were boobs hanging off the balconies.

It wouldn't be a good idea, like playing Manly out of the CC each week expecting the Manly fans to travel every game.

The fact that it would be a new team wouldn't help the cause as there would be no huge amount of long term die hard fans willing to put in the effort.

Isn't it about 40km from Ipswich to Brisbane ie Blacktown to Sydney and closer than Penrith or Campbelltown to Sydney.

It might be a realatively short distance but how many people would go from Campbelltown or Penrith to the SFS every home game to see their team play? Some might but not that many. It's a 52,000 seat stadium. They're going to need a few dedicated fans to fill it, especially after the initial hype dies down.

They already do. But if it came down to Perth v CC, a team in Perth would result in a bigger increase in juniors. CC will continue producing juniors regardless of whether they have a team, RL is already popular there.
Who says? Can you tell me if Melbourne's juniors have increased to the point of actually producing some first graders?

Neither will being in new viewers, same argument as juniors. There would be another game, so more TV dollars, with ANY 2 teams. People in Ipswich and CC are already watching NRL. A Perth team would bring in new viewers.
Only if they are shown on FTA at a decent hour.

You could be waiting a while. The last thing the NRL needs is an eleventh NSW team. Even someone as dense as adamkungl could see that.
FFS dingbat lets move the border 200kms north and watch you flip out at there being 13 teams in NSW and far to many - and punt the Broncos and Titans.

You have NO F*CKING IDEA!!!!

WTF are you smoking?

Streaming live games from Perth into the east coast at 9:30 on a friday night would increase the numbers watching the second game eg. (Reds vs. Eels). Adverting will finally be sold as National rather than East coast and this should increase the price for TV networks.
WTF are YOU smoking?

Do you really believe more people would watch it because it's live?

First, you havew to get that game on FTA in Perth,
Second, you have to play a QLD game for one of the two matches. And if every Friday night was simply a Brooncos/Titans/Cowpats/Reds rotation, where do you fit the Friday Night blockbuster between Easts v Saints, Parra v Dogs or Tigers v Manly?

And inserting the word "Perth" won't increase sponsorship dingbat. If Perth gets 30k watching at home, and the CC gets 60k - the CC would be the entity that increased advertising dollars.

Anyway, we are already international - by your thinking that should make us more expensive already compared to "National" comps.

Perth has a population approaching 2mill and has far more growth potential than any other current bid.
Just having more people doesn't mean potential. You need to factor in desire and probability. There is far greater probability of a Test player coming from Wyong within the next 20 years as there is one coming from Cottesloe. Just as there is bugger all chance of come coming from Toorak - which has had 12 years already.

At the very least it will get league on at a decent hour in another state of Australia increasing the NRL's exposure, something Ipswich and the CC both get already.
Not necessarily. See Melbourne.

Perth needs to be in 100% no matter what. The other 2 can fight it out with the logical choice going to CC due to the progression of the bid. If the Ipswich bid got off the ground earlier it would be the favourite. We will just have to wait and see what they can do in 1year to convince the NRL to get a licence and if they do what can happen in the following year to get their bid up to speed upon entry.
No. Perth needs to convince the NRL that it will be far better than the Melbourne experience - 12 years and still needing to be propped up and with embarrassing crowds despite throwing Origins and Internationals at them for years. Not to mention money.

I would love for Perth to come back. None of the arguments listed here about "national" this and "potential" that will work though.

Using Train or car, there is no way anyone can get from Suncorp to Gold Coast proper, or central Ipswich in less than 50 minutes at a minimum. More like an hour.

On game day, the commuting would be so horrific, families would come once before Mum gave up trying to get the kids there again.

You're talking rubbish Loudy and you know it.

Perth's situation is years ahead of Melbourne's in 98 - There are already a few NRL players from Perth (Cory Paterson of the top of my head), Perth has entered teams in the NSW Cup and SG Ball, Perth already has a Rugby Union team.

When the Storm came in Rugby of any form was close to non existent in Melbourne.

Only if they are shown on FTA at a decent hour.

That's the gutless NRL's job, not theirs.

Embarrassing crowds? No worse than most of Sydney. The few thousand Parra pulled for the GF rematch was embarrassing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't Melbourne's crowds at their highest ever even with them playing for nothing? Melbourne are in for a huge year next year imo, it will be hyped as their big comeback and revenge on the NSW/QLD dominated NRL.

I am well aware of what the Reds have been doing recently with their juniors. Mentioning Corey Patterson proves my point - not yours. In the same wilderness period the CC produced the likes of O'Meley and Orford and a stack of others.

That's the gutless NRL's job, not theirs.
So what? If it didn't happen to Melbourne how is Perth any different????

One off - and you deliberately ingored the horrible weather. Happy to talk average crowds if you like

Average crowds at MRS are 11865, Parra Stadium 14572. Average crowd last year at Olympic was 11979

Wow. Only 2707 less then Parra....one team has had all their Premierships stripped, are deep in AFL territory and have played all year for nothing and the other are Grand Finalists, were favourites for the Premiership and are in the heartland of RL.

I think adamkungl is on to something, next year might be very good for Storm. Also, disappointing from Parra fans.
