Western Corridor NRL bid

Living in Springfield currently, I would get season tickets if they got a new team in Brissy just to spite all the dickhead broncos fans in this joint. Will always be a cowboy but I would try and support anything that is a direct rugby league competitor to the Broncos. I even got a name picked out for them......

Yeah if we got a team Id support them as a second team. Would be even better if they built a stadium in springfield.

Who cares if Broncos support is diluted? Would Be be fantastic for people to jump ship from the Broncos to prop up a new team. The Broncos will manage just fine

Not only that, it would start an "arms race" for fans which would massively boost interest...

Broncos have been in cruise for way too long.

Are you suggesting that the Broncs might stop taking Southern Qld for granted ?

I would love to see that.

Council’s $8.5m pledge for NRL franchise
Joel Gould | 13th Apr 2015 5:00 AM

SUPPORT for the Western Corridor NRL bid has taken another massive step forward with an $8.5 million commitment from Ipswich City Council towards a new training and administration base at Springfield.

The funds will depend on the bid being granted a licence, but a meeting between Western Corridor NRL bid chairman Steve Johnson, Ipswich City Council CEO Jim Lindsay and council sports supremo David Morrison has given the bid extra impetus.

The council has $3.5 million set aside to enhance the training field, land which it owns and will provide rent free to the NRL bid and - if successful with its royalty to the region's funding application to the state government - will commit another $5 million of its own funds.

Mr Johnson hailed the meeting as a historic day for rugby league.

"We are reclaiming the land we had originally earmarked through the council to be for rugby league, which momentarily the Lions and AFL aspired to take sole ownership of," he said.

"The funds go towards the green fill itself, turning it into a quality training and playing venue. Like the Broncos, we need to have a training surface that is the equivalent of any. We will actively seek extra funding from the State and Federal Government with the support of council.

"The council is helping us with the financial modelling and conceptual planning and they will assist us with the grants."

Cr Morrison said it was vital "not to put the cart before the horse" and pointed out the NRL had not called for expressions for interest to expand.

However he is keen to take NRL CEO David Smith, who works at the Queensland Rugby League offices in Brisbane one day a week, out to inspect the site.

"We want to keep this before the NRL so they don't forget us when expansion comes," he said. "We would like to meet with Dave Smith and show him the ground, and the statistics of the whole growth of the western corridor which is the heartland of the growth of junior rugby league."

Mr Johnson said he envisaged a playing stadium to hold 10,000 would also be built.

"It will not be a base to play NRL games, but it will be a base where local clubs can come and play on a first class surface and hold events," he said. "Any community group that needs a quality playing surface and boutique stadium to host events will be able to... along with the QRL for representative games.

"We will have our state-of-the-art training facility there with educational rooms to be utilised by the University of Queensland. The cost would come in at less than $20 million."

Ipswich City Council is committed to bringing a national sport to Ipswich.

"We just hope it is for rugby league," Mr Johnson said. "All we need is a licence.

"We have no doubt that we have the playing talent in our district to fulfil our dream of having a largely home grown side in a short period of time. We have shown we can do that at the Ipswich Jets."

What name should we call future Ipswich NRL team?
Georgia Brown | 27th Apr 2015 5:00 AM

AN $8.5 million commitment from Ipswich City Council towards the Western Corridor NRL bid and a new training base at Springfield has attracted interest from QT readers and suggestions for a team name.

When QT Facebook users were asked what they would call the potential NRL team, many readers believed connecting the team to the city's defence force links was the way to go.

Ashley Clarke suggested the Ipswich Hornets for a team name.

"It symbolises the FA18 aircraft so prominent in the skies around Ipswich, and our Amberley Air Base heritage."

Lliam Parslow agreed with the theme.

"The city prides itself on its defence force links.

"So maybe, Western Hornets, Western Aviators or Western Defenders."

Facebook user Taf Martin posted: "Great idea... Will further enhance the area.

"As for a name, given the links to the air force, how about Ipswich/Western Flyers."

Hailed as a historic day for rugby league, there was also positive feedback from Facebook users about the impact the NRL development would have in Ipswich.

Travis Reardon commented: "Think of the money this would inject into the local economy.

"Think of the jobs it would create.

"It would give the youth a place to go and keep out of trouble.

"And local talent an opportunity to play in the NRL. It would give the locals a team to be proud of.

"I can only see positives to come from having a team."

The funding for the superior playing venue is proposed to be injected from the State and Federal governments with the support of council.

However, some are not convinced this is the best use of $8.5 million and are and doubtful of the placement in Springfield being beneficial to Ipswich.

Kay Mcallan showed her disapproval, posting: "I think that kind of money could be spent on better things for the city and community."

Ross Turner commented: "If they are based at Springfield, we might as well call it Brisbane West."

No.. Springfield is not western brisbane. I know brisbane would love to count springfield as its own due to its grown and economy.

I like ipswich Hornets, hornets are a fairly new addition to ipswich though and it's not guaranteed there will always be hornets there, but it is probably the coolest name.

I think it should be the Ipswich Jets, although having it affiliated with a QLD cup team might reduce its capacity to gain fans outside of ipswich.

Drop the name Ipswich as it alienates too many. Hornets is a great name. Sounds like the Ipswich community is right behind the RAAF so any name along these lines will sit well, unlike that stupid Brisbane Bombers name

Toowoomba's new airport is called Brisbane West and Springfield is part of the Brisbane metro. Wouldn't rule out Brisbane being in there somewhere.

Think Ipswich is too narrow for drawing a big fanbase, they need a much broader appeal than being called after a local town/suburb.

Springfield is a suburb of Ipswich. Ipswich is a separate city to Brisbane. Toowoomba is well and truly not Brisbane regardless of the name of the Airport.

If the team is based out of Ipswich and holds a Brisbane name the community wont embrace it as much as a 'Western' or 'Ipswich' name.

I'm not saying they should, just saying they might. City council boundaries are pretty meaningless.

I don't get why people don't want the team to use Brisbane in the name.

There's nothing wrong with calling the team the West Brisbane Hornets or the South Brisbane Hornets (or whatever), the Broncos don't have a monopoly on the word Brisbane and it's not like they wouldn't be representing those parts of Brisbane.

So why not something as simple as that?

Exactly. You see Manchester United/Manchester City, AC Milan/Inter Milan, New York Giants/New York Jets.
