so you don't think that the name 'Ipswich' will deter those in say Warwick or T'ba, or say Woodridge from supporting them but 'South Queensland' [the name for the region as a whole much like North Queensland] would?

The Cows didn't call themselves Townsville Cowboys for precisely that reason [eg-few in Cairns would support a 'Townsville' team, but 'North Qld' gives everyone in the North ownership .

I don't think I made myself clear, I agree with the region thing but disagree that "Wests Jets" is too vaguefro the reasons I mentioned before.

A team based in Ipswich would last 10 minutes. Despite it's large population, there aint any $ out there. Brisbane's Campbelltown. The Broncos would schmooch all their corporate palm greasers and bleed it dry. It would be a worse case than the South Queensland Crushers because it has John Ribot involved. Everything he ever did turned to sh*t - even the last time he helped a player (Cameron Smith) it ended up stripping Melbourne of 2 premierships!

A second Brisbane team HAS to have a chunk of corporate support - meaning CBD. The Crushers had that link with the QRL.

Ipswich? Their biggest corporate apart from the local maccas would be Centrelink.

The Bears will still sh*t this in.

 That would be a fitting naming rights sponsor for the area "The Centerlink Ipswich Jets" It would probably attract a good slice of the Logan population aswell

Plenty of cash in Ipswich, build a stadium near Springfield and get Springfield Land corp as naming rights, yesterday paper had Maha Sinathamby worth $777 million so the money is there

100% Agree with Brutus. Broncos supporters suddenly get paranoid about their turf when there is a sniff of competition about them. Besides, once upon a time they hated Lang Park and couldn't wait to shaft the old girl.
I haven't come across one Broncos supporter that opposes the Idea of expansion in SEQ so not sure where you get that from?? My only concern is how it would effect the Titans. As much as I hate Ferkin coasties we need them to be strong. Especially with the inception of the GC suns AFL team.

So i didnt want to go through all the diff threads and stuff but is it my understanding the teams looking to get into the comp are as follows?

Ipswich
Perth
Central Qld
Central Coast
PNG
Wellington (havnt heard much in ages are they still keen)
Toowoomba (i know for a fact the Clysdales are preparing to apply)

So there is 7 that i know of who have i forgot? would Redcliffe or Adelaide apply? This could be a huge decision on who gets in. I think Perth is a certanty which leaves the rest battling for the one spot.

A 2nd tier comp may be needed to accompany the other teams that miss out with a few extra throw in as in Shellharbour and Newtown, Darwin perhaps?

What the???!

They're not even playing in the Q-Cup anymore!

And your point? you dont need to be playing in the Q cup or NSW Cup to gain admittance, They are still a very strong club when it comes to juniors and such, yes they may be behind the black ball compared to some of the others but im just stating which was informed to me the other day by someone tht works for the company willing to put the backing money in for them to move forward and apply

an earlier story re Gallop's take on the Jets bid

Ipswich 'vital to NRL future'

Chris Garry | 14th July 2010

AN NRL team must be placed in the Ipswich corridor to help secure the future of rugby league, NRL chief executive David Gallop has claimed.

Gallop told The Queensland Times that the thriving region west of Brisbane was ripe for a team when the game next expanded, likely to be in 2013.
“For the strength of the game we need a team in that Ipswich area west of Brisbane,” Gallop said.
“The corridor around Ipswich is the fastest growing region in Australia and we need to be a part of it. We need two teams in Brisbane and having a presence in the Ipswich region is a must for our game’s future.”
Ipswich’s population is 170,000 but government forecasts state it will explode to more than 400,000 in the next two decades, providing a huge potential pool of footy-loving families.
Gallop said he had visited Ipswich twice in the past two years to explore its potential as an expansion site.
“I’ve spoken to Mayor Paul Pisasale a few times about the prospect of a team and I’ve met with Ipswich Jets officials as well,” Gallop said.
Adding weight to Gallop’s claims is the explosion in Ipswich’s junior league numbers.
The region eclipsed 2500 registered juniors for the first time this year.
In 12 months’ time NRL officials will formally decide on whether a new team should be introduced in time for the new 2013 television rights deal.
Those rights are expected to be worth more than $1 billion, providing the game’s hierarchy with cash to assist expansion.
Gallop said Ipswich, Perth and the NSW Central Coast were the three top contenders to house the next team, but stressed that Ipswich would eventually be home to its own club.
The Brisbane Broncos’ outgoing CEO, Bruno Cullen, said if there was to be a third NRL team in south-east Queensland, it should be in Ipswich.
Cullen said an Ipswich team would need its own stadium as Suncorp Stadium was already close to booked out during winter.
“There were more than 40 games of football in different codes played at Suncorp last year and getting an extra 12 games in would be difficult,” he said.
“Personally I would favour having a team in Perth, but as far as south-east Queensland goes the western corridor would work.
“It would not be easy to set a team up there but it I think it would work.”
Mayor Pisasale said he believed the team should be named the Western Jets.
Cr Pisasale said a stadium did not need to be built immediately to cater for the team.
“The team could play out of Suncorp Stadium. In Sydney many teams play out of Homebush and their fans travel from their home suburbs for it,” Pisasale said.
“With all the population coming to Springfield and the new rail line coming in it would not be difficult for fans to get to Suncorp.”
The NRL would want any Ipswich team to draw strong support from Springfield and the growing suburb of Richlands.
Mayor Pisasale added: “I have a lot of respect for David Gallop, he’s a smart man. He knows you have to go where the fish are to get a bite and the fish are in the western corridor.”

.....

Also - while there are many things to question about Ipswich's potential to be a success in the NRL, coporate support is not one of them.

The number of major national and international companies coming to the region is quite incredible.

The Ipswich to Logan area is the fastest growing region in the country. Engineering companies, property developers and many others are currently in a dog fight for the region's people and its government's heart and mind.

The Qld Gov have basically decided that if you want to buy a house in five years time in SE QLD it will have to be in the new developments in and around Ipswich.
An area called Ripley, cented just outside of Ipswich is planned to be a new city in its self. They are directing everyone here.

The Ipswich region is an infant western sydney and it needs a sporting team.

The region's rugby league juniors are exploding and the talent in the early teenage ranks is excellent. So many polly's are here also... they just need a team to support.

The Broncos would lose some support I think in the short term, but in the long term would not be affected.

Having a team in Perth may be great for expansion but who will meet the costs of travelling there. Taking your NRL and U20's squad plus support staff will cost a bit of coin.

Perth well maybe good for the game but it is AFL territory and always will be. Should have a current NRL club that is struggling for support have a defacto relationship with them.

QUOTE]

The same people who cover the cost of travelling to NQ, or NZ or ACT or anywhere else. Every other code in Aus can do it, so can the NRL!!!!!!!!

The WARL has been in existence since the 1950's

They have done the hard work with junior teams in SG Ball etc

Games taken there have had excellent support.

An upgraded NIB Stadium is perfect for RL.

There is a sh!tload of NSW/QLD expats in Perth.

Other codes had to start somewhere when they pushed into NSW and QLD . It is our turn to start taking a piece of the pie in non rugby league states. We can then grow on the market share. Yes it will take time and will cost money. There is definitely room for the NRL in he Perth's sport market.

If we could have our cake and eat it too, for the good of the game, the Sharks would die. CC, WA and SEQ in the comp 2013.

Just like people in other threads have said the game is bigger than the Broncos (biggest club in the comp) regarding monopoly on expansion, then surely the game is bigger than the Sharks (smallest/weakest team in the comp).

oh oh, bet the Bears are getting that deja vue feeling!

Who they choose will send out a huge statement of intent for RL in this country imo. if they go the two safe options, Ipswich and Bears they are holding up the white flag to ever being anything more than they are now, if they go with the reds it shows a confidence that the NRL is aiming to be the number one code in the country.

You don’t kill teams in a pro comp unless you want to deal with a massive backlash and negative publicity. You relocate them to an untapped area with potential or merge/absorb them into another team nearby.

Sharks to Adelaide, bring in WA and let CC and Ipswich battle it out for the 2nd spot. Whoever loses can join in the next expansion round. More competition for spots = better bids = stronger NRL.
