What if Jarryd Hayne doesn't make the 49ers cut? Will he return to the NRL?

Sets a dangerous precedent if he's allowed to sign on and play after 30 June.

NRL do need to secure his return to the game somehow, to avoid a situation like when they botched the return of Izzy Folau and he went to union instead. They were severely critcised for that.

And maybe this is to make it up to Parramatta who were dudded on this deal.

I think you will find that a major reason that Parramatta was over the cap was they were paying out players that no longer played for them. If Foran is walking away from the game then why should he count under the Eels cap anymore?

No club can sign players whether they are a registered player or not after June 30 or you'd have players signing on in grand final week to play in the grand final. Which takes me back to the question why NRL clubs are allowed to ignore rules that apply to every other level of the sport. As usual they are making it up as they go along.

Who are these superstars you're referring to? No RL contract but good enough to take someone's spot in the finals?

Genius stuff mate. Really good analysis.

Like, hmmm, a Jarryd Hayne say.

You made it sound like an epidemic. 'You'd have players signing in grand final week blah blah blah'

A team still needs to be able to afford the player at this point in the season. That automatically stops it from occurring very often.

If parra can, good luck to them taking the enormous gamble that he will be ready to contribute something in first grade after such a long absence from the game.

seems to be you're the one that is
It's a rule in every level of the game but the NRL decides it will just allow players to break the rule because it's the NRL

It should never occur. That's why you have a rule stopping it. Except apparently the NRL can just make the rules up as it goes so now it is entirely plausible that a club could sign a player deep into the finals to help them win the comp. If Hayne did want to win a comp in his life he'd be better off waiting till the finals and signing for whichever top four side had some money left in the cap. Wouldn't have to be much. And it would be all legal, unless the NRL changed the rules again.

Is there a rule that says you have to play a certain amount of games during the regular season at a club before you're eligible to play finals?

I know there is a limit for NSW cup etc to stop clubs stacking those teams with first graders.

I help run a rugby league club. I know the rules. We can't sign anyone after June 30. No one. Not from another club, not from another sport, not even some bloke who has never played a sport in his life. And the reason this rule exists is precisely to prevent clubs bringing in players for finals and grand finals. But apparently this is now perfectly possible in the elite level. If Ben Barba got hurt in the prelim final and was out of the GF and Cronulla had $10k left in the cap they could sign Hayne for one week and he could play.

Thats given me an idea East Coast.
They should bring in a pre finals draft. Each club in the finals can draft a player from a club that is not in the finals (on loan just for the finals). Team that finished first gets the first pick and so on.
Would certainly add some interest.

Lol enormous gamble.

If they have the space cap space with no one else to spend it on, its not a gamble at all
