What is your most unpopular opinion about the NRL?

Which appeals to the bogan element that make up a large slice of RL's fanbase.

You get it now?

Oh ok, so a broadcast team will happily show a game where one of the commentators has literally zero idea of the modern game to appease *checks notes* a minimal bogan amount that continues to hate watch the game?

I don't know why they don't get some celebrities like Andrew Denton or Anh Do or Russell Crowe in to do commentary.

I doubt they even know who their audience is or what they feel about the production of the game tbh.
RL still has a perception as a bogun lower class sport andTV probably just believes it to be true and keeps following that route.

I can live with Cronk, he's early in his commentary career, he's got great player insight and is clearly an intelligent bloke. Probably just needs to work on some personality and develop a more 'natural' flow.

The real crime against rugba league is that Andy Raymond was let go by Fox while potatoes like Gordie, and Blocker remain employed.

Don't forget Kevvie CTE Walters

Yeah you took my post and made it better. Mine was probably just a reaction to having to listen to him all weekend. But yeah he's entitled to get better, would be an imposing gig to get into and over time his intelligence for the game will (hopefully) come out. Although his voice is grating.

Blocker is awful. He could very easily be replaced with a digital Blocker who just says certain pre-programmed comments at certain times, because that's all he does now. Or just you know, not have a Blocker at all.

State of Origin would have to end for an expanded club competition to thrive around Australia. That's partly why the AFL didn't try too hard to keep theirs going: the top product is every round.

Agreed, there’s too much focus on it. What happens if we ever get Victoria and WA developing a good number of juniors? Do they just miss out, or will there be an expanded SoO series with 4+ teams?

Too many boys club - Every media outlet has them
30% of players are polynesians - Not one Maori or Polynesian is a commentator or media personality in Australia. This hurts the game in more ways than one. The RL talk is all Aussie larrikinism and tribalism, not much indepth analysis.
Think this is pretty fair to be honest. I think it's entirely possible to have a good mix between light hearted content and in depth league focused content.

The peak level of tactical insight generally doesn't surpass "Yeah the forwards have made good metres allowing the halves to operate!"...not exactly thought provoking or insightful.

I don't mind having shows dedicated to piss taking (Matty Johns/professor etc are great for their purpose) but I think there are smart league minds out there who deserve a platform to actually delve into games and tactics.

On your first point - I think the game would certainly benefit from a bit of diversity in the media.

When some young guys try, they're stunted by the same media. Denan Kemp - Kempy - The people's beak - started doing some of that but then NRL wouldn't give him rights to comment on the videos while showing the videos.

Channel Nine were smart enough to keep Roach on the sideline 20 years ago.

Why Fox have decided he can contribute more in the box I will never understand. From telling clearly concussed players to "get up because their team needs them" to saying Townsend's send off was harsh "because it was just a simple shoulder charge".

Anasta and Tallis are morons, but Roach promotes a dinosaur attitude to the game.

I was thinking today that for some reason, Roach isn't as annoying when he's on Matty John's podcast. I think its because his role on the podcast is to harken back to how the game was and contribute anecdotes and history. When he's put in a role of commentating on the game of today, his history becomes a liability rather than an asset.

That the warriors are not hero's for doing their job, getting paid really well in most cases and being put up in a resort. Also, the players who left should not be paid.
