I watched The Longest Yard yesterday, and was pleasantly suprised.

Some lines were hilarious, and the football scenes were quite realistic. I thought the storyline might get overly sentimental at the end, but this was not the case.

I'd give it 8/10.

Madagascar - just your run of the mill kids movie with cute animal characters that will undoubtedly sell shedloads of merchandise. But I enjoyed it.

Saw Troy on the weekend, couldn't believe they shortened the length of the war to a few days. I was digging it 'til it stopped playing out anything like the Iliad, then it just lost me and I hated it. Especially the hollywood ending. Sure, babies being hurled off the walls of Troy maybe wouldn't have been totally appropriate but the film's conclusion was ridiculous.

Went to the movies to see Fantastic Four; knew it was going to be bad, but I subjected myself to it for purposes of socialising, I just wish it didn't have to cost me 15 bucks. Anyhoo, the movie was actually more watchable than I thought, the story just didn't go anywhere. It was like a pilot for a tv series, because it mostly focussed on the foursome adapting to their new found powers, and the conflict between them and the villain was pretty minor. I think a sequel to this, with everything put in place, could actually be quite good. Heck, the way it finishes practically demands a second movie. But that's all dependent on box office take, if it forever remains as a standalone flick it won't be remembered fondly.

Took my kids to see it on Sunday and thought it was amusing enough. Had a few references in it that I doubt the kids would pick up on though, most prominently a book called "To Serve Lemur" that the lemurs find left behind by the hyenas (at least that's what I assume they are). This is a reference to a short story called "To Serve Man" by Damon Knight and which was aired in the third series of The Twilight Zone. To cut a long story short, it's an error of interpretation and the book itself is a cookbook rather than a helpful guide to dealing with man (or lemurs in the case of Madagascar).

Watched Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow last night and wasn't expecting much. It was quite clever. A throwback to the old B-grade science fiction movies of the 1950s with a good dose of cold war paranoia. Reasonable story line with a good ending.

Saw Sin City yesterday, freaking amazing. Words cannot do it justice. Well, they can, but not the few I'll write here.

Have also seen Sideways, Blade Trinity, and Napolean Dynamite in the last few days.
Sin City: 9.5 out of 10
Sideways: 8 out of 10
Blade Trinity: 7.5 out of 10
Napolean Dynamite: 5 out of 10

what?

i'm now scared that you're ref for the pirates this round. lol. gosh

Well, if it's any consolation, I usually enjoy your articles. Napolean Dynamitr was poorly paced and not overly amusing. I've seen better comedy in first year theatre classes

i freakon love napoleon. it's pretty much the most quotable movie of all-time

I'd rate it behind Super Troopers and Anchorman in terms of quotability, but I agree it has a lot of good lines. My mates are currently obsessed with the 'You're just jealous because I get to talk to hot babes on the internet all day' one.

I saw War Of The Worlds a week or two ago, and I absolutely loved it. Halfway through the movie I was just sitting there with a big smile on my face thinking 'How good is this?'. Perhaps my favourite movie of all time, and I'm seriously thinking of going back and seeing it a second time (which is something I've never done before).

The strange thing is, I don't really know why I liked it so much. There's no one thing that really stands out to me as being brilliant. Something about it just touched me.

Also saw Batman Begins on Sunday, and while it wasn't quite as good as I was hoping it would be, it was still much better than any of the other Batman movies.

Just finished watching Paradise Road.

A pretty good film with Cate Blanchett, Glenn Close and Juliana Marguilles(sp?) about a group of women held captive by the Japanese in WWII. It's well worth the 3 or 4 bucks it'll cost you to rent, but you should probably stay away if you can't stand a bit of song incorporated into the story line.
