I didn't think The Lone Ranger was as bad as everyone says.
It was definitely to long, but I thought it was fun enough.
The ending with the trains was pretty well done (but once again, a bit too long).

I thought Pacific Rim was some good brainless fun too.

Finally got around to watching Guardians of the Galaxy, gotta say I was disappointed

Its not a bad movie mind you, one of the better Marvel ones
But it didn't live up to its 8.7 rating on imdb and the glowing reviews everywhere

You could almost add an extra imdb mark on all the Marvel movies due to fanboy influence
Of the lot only The Avengers was the only really good one for me

GOTG started out great, completely different style to other comic book movies with interesting diverse characters and the promise to be a true space cowboy movie.

But the pay-off just wasn't there, after they figured out what the orb was the movie took the safe route and did nothing new. The villain ended up your typical generic goon while the heroes played out the usual 'gang of misfits comes together' arc. All grey characters quickly turned black and white.

It was made out to be hilarious too, but thought some jokes were great while others fell flat and were too goofy. Chris Pratt didn't really nail it either, he's ok but he's got nothing on Harrison Ford or Nathan Fillion who did similar characters.

7/10, good but expected much more

Watched transformers: age of extinction tonight.

Yeah, it was bad. Terrible story and characters. But I didn't watch it for them. I watched it to see giant robots blowing shit up. Which they did. So I wasn't too disappointed.

As someone who has been watching him for years, I think Pratt is better than both of them.

What did he do wrong as Star Lord?

What did he do wrong as Star Lord?

Its subjective, but to me Pratt came off as a bit douchey and random rather than the rogue maverick type character he was going for. He fell somewhere between the anti-hero we can all root for and the comic relief sidekick.

As I said a young Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Nathan Fillion (Firefly/Serenity) or funnily enough even Bradley Cooper would have better pulled off the flawed but likeable lead who could carry the film.

Not entirely his fault as the Star Lord character was written inconsistently, one minute being a resourceful and womanising lone ranger and the next a goofy oddball spouting pop culture references and doing dance-offs. He does a sudden 180 halfway through and forgets about money etc. and discovers heroism out of the blue. There was no depth or transition to his character arc here.

But pretty much all the characters were written badly imo

I thought Chris Pratt did an excellent job. I'm not sure about the whole 180 thing, I thought the character was pretty consistent and always had that random sense of humour.

He suggests after seeing the collector that they cash in the orb.
Then ten minutes later he saves Gamora and comes up with a plan to stop Ronan.

It was a pretty sudden change, I see what the movie was doing but it didn't really develop why he cares for Gamora or why he isn't money driven anymore.

I think its clear he wants to tap that fine alien ass

It got great reviews because the vast majority of people, most of whom are not Marvel fanboys, absolutely loved it.

I remember seeing the preview for it and thinking that I would give it a skip. Then some free tickets came my way so I went along and enjoyed it from beginning to end.

It was easily the best Marvel Comics based movie released by any studio so far.

Transformers - age of extinction.

Forget about the plot, just good old fashion guns with lots of explosions.

everytime that girl was screaming "daddy" to Mark Wahlberg, I kept saying to myself "who's your daddy??"

Thought I've give Alien and Aliens a re-run after not seeing them for nearly 30 years. Both movies have stood the test of time reasonably well.

Both get about 7.5 - 8/10 from me.

I just read that the creator of the Alien creature concept, H.R. Giger, died in May this year. He apparently received a well deserved Academy Award for Special Effects for the first movie.

It might be a good idea if there was a LU's Favourite Science Fiction Movie poll. No fantasy or horror stuff like LOTR, The Hobbit or Nightmare On Elm Street - just pure sci-fi. I reckon both of the above movies would feature highly on most people's lists.

I suppose the poll shouldn't happen until LU's Favourite Comedy and Worst Movie polls are out of the way, both which have seemed to have died in the arse.

Alien is set in space but for mine it's more horror.

Actually, we're both correct. In most of the commentary I've just read on these movies, they are described as "sci-fi/horror". One description (which is quite apt) said it was a movie about the human condition.

Alien and Aliens are quite different from your typical slasher movie where some creature tears apart a group of teenagers staying in an isolated log cabin for the weekend. There's no sci-fi in that - just pure gore.

Alien and Aliens are different movies in themselves although sharing a similar theme. Both are great as Alien has great suspense whereas Aliens for mine is one of the best action/sci-fi films there are

Not calling you (or anyone) a Marvel fanboy at all! But it seems like their movies get a huge amount of IMDB love, it was a catch all statement from me. I did a quick scan though and a lot of them have dropped down to the low 7's, high 6's which is about right... so I take that one back.

I still don't think GOTG is anywhere near 8.6 or belongs in the imdb top 250, I expect this rating to end up in the mid to high 7's.

Good movie which started out *great* but had too little plot and too many throwaway/undeveloped characters to really make it outstanding. Comments such as it being this generations Star Wars is just silly to me. The movie tried a few new things but ultimately didn't go anywhere truly unique or ground-breaking.

The Marvel movies I really rate are The Avengers, and to a lesser extent Cap 2 and Iron Man... GOTG falls below those imho
