Not calling you (or anyone) a Marvel fanboy at all! But it seems like their movies get a huge amount of IMDB love, it was a catch all statement from me. I did a quick scan though and a lot of them have dropped down to the low 7's, high 6's which is about right... so I take that one back.

I still don't think GOTG is anywhere near 8.6 or belongs in the imdb top 250, I expect this rating to end up in the mid to high 7's.

Good movie which started out *great* but had too little plot and too many throwaway/undeveloped characters to really make it outstanding. Comments such as it being this generations Star Wars is just silly to me. The movie tried a few new things but ultimately didn't go anywhere truly unique or ground-breaking.

The Marvel movies I really rate are The Avengers, and to a lesser extent Cap 2 and Iron Man... GOTG falls below those imho

I've found that most of the Marvel movies don't stand up to repeat viewings.

Thor
Iron Man 2
Iron Man 3
Thor 2
Cap 1
Cap 2

All got worse every time I watched them. Thor, IM3 and Cap 2 still stand up as good movies though.
I'm expecting a similar reaction when I see GotG again.

Winona Ryder would have made it better, or you know, anyone that had solid acting experience.

Yep.
While Sofia Coppola doesn't completely ruin the whole film, she is in a big enough part to take it down a fair way. With a much better actress in that role the movie would be regarded much more highly I'm sure.

I watched Edge of Tomorrow.
This was a very enjoyable movie. The marketing campaign for it was terrible. Originally I wasn't eager to see it after watching the previews, but then I'd heard so many good things I had to check it out. Glad I did.

You're right about this.

I found that there is surprisingly little happening in those movies other than to set up the Avengers (apart from the original Iron Man), they felt like extended TV episodes.

Of your list, Cap 2 is the most solid standalone film.

I thought Iron Man 3 could have been something truly amazing but they totally butchered it. Again opinion is wildly divided on that.

Yeah true. Most movies do unless they are real classics though

I was subjected to the latest Transformers movie.

Simply put:
An overbearing 3 hour long Michael Bay wankfest over CGI. And sadly, the CGI he used was used poorly. The storyline was flimsy and weak and sadly left it itself open to yet another movie. The most expensive debacle I've ever laid eyes on.

Action movies should be sharp, punchy, by the seat of your pants. You Should NEVER be wondering "How is this movie still not over?"

he could have made it into 2 slightly better movies and it would have been much closer to passable than it ended up being.

Agree on Transformers.

I can tolerate a movie with stupid plot with cool action scenes if it is mercifully short (the first Transformers was ok), but the 3 sequels have been so incredibly long that their mind-numbingly stupid plots overcome everything else and it's all you're left with.

You can only watch things blowing up for so long before it becomes boring.

The first was good. It was novel and entertaining with a simple yet effective storyline.

The second was passable.

Its been utter dross ever since, and it keep getting drossier.

One transformer is a Bugatti (french car) that transforms into a samurai (even says Sensai), which alone is inconsistent and makes no sense.

I thought they were from another planet?

Watched Sin City : A Dame To Kill For at the cinemas last night, it was OK but didn't quite have the flow or impact like the first one did.

Teh b00bies were good though!

Also nice to see former Shortland Street actor Marton Csokas (Leonard the coffee trolley nerd in the mid 90s) notch another blockbuster under his belt albeit a short-lived cameo!
