Thought I've give Alien and Aliens a re-run after not seeing them for nearly 30 years. Both movies have stood the test of time reasonably well.

Both get about 7.5 - 8/10 from me.

Alien was outstanding and set the bar for sci-fi horror.
A similar and underrated movie is The Thing

Aliens was a lot of fun and sensibly was a different movie to Alien, it took things in a new direction and it really worked.

Would be great to have a sci/fi countdown list!

Finally watched Insidious last night, started off pretty creepy, but once the source of the creepiness is revealed it gets a little bit cheesy. Scariest parts are where you are anticipating something scary about to be revealed, rather than the actual reveal itself, enhanced by those creepy squealy violins. Ya gotta give it to those violins, they're made for horror movies!!!

Also on the DVD (yes I watched it on a physical disc!!! OMG!!!) there was a trailer for Tucker & Dale Vs Evil. Has anyone seen this?
It looks pretty darned funny, a parody of cliched horror movies where a group of beautiful teenagers think they are being victimised by a couple of hick serial killers from their "cabin in the woods", but the hicks are seemingly just innocent victim of circumstance think they are being victimised by the crazy teens ritualistically killing themselves, or something like that!
Seems to have pretty positive reviews, might have to check it out!

And with that, my next lot of movies on the cards to watch this next week or so :
- Tucker & Dale vs Evil
- 12 Monkeys (been on a bit of a Gilliam binge)
- Downfall
- Scent Of A Woman (both of these after the monologue thread)
- Young Guns II (nostalgia hit, don't think I've watched this since it was on TV in 92 or so)

Whatever happened to Lou Diamond Phillips? I think the last movie I saw him in was The Big Hit (which I really enjoyed, must watch that again).
I mostly remember him for being on the cover for the only G-rated action movie at the old local videostore back in the 90s. I never watched it and can't even think what it was called (I only remember he's sitting on a Harley Davidson or some sort of motorcycle) but it always cracked me up seeing that on the shelves.
Who in their right mind would watch a G-rated action movie!!!

Was the most pleasant surprise of a movie I have ever come across. Can't remember a movie making me laugh that much from start to finish. Thought it looked like a B grade movie at the start, but f**k. Really good

LDP has mostly done TV these days. Stargate: Universe and Southland both come to mind

The Maze Runner. The actual maze itself just wasn't interesting enough. Was expecting all sort of hell in there, instead of a couple of daddy long legs.

Chef. I LOVED it. Swingers is easily my favorite movie ever so to see Favreau in the actor/director/writing role (sorry, he didn't direct Swingers but you get the point) again made me happy. I was almost in tears during the food truck in Austin scene! f**k I miss Texas BBQ!

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

I'm not sure it's as good as the first but I love these movies and how they are done.
Just sucks that Clive Owen couldn't play Dwight again.

Sin City 2 just did not have the magic of the first one....I think they tried a bit too hard.

The good: Eva Green and to a lesser extent, Powers Boothe.
The bad: First 30 minutes was downright boring...got better from there. Bruce Willis is just wasted and I just cannot connect with Jessica Alba.
