This might surprise you but I straight up hate this movie and actually feel it's moral core is disgusting.
. The film manipulates the viewer into feeling for the German boy despite the fact the whole movie has numerous numbers of Jews going to their death. The perspective is messed up.
that’s an interesting take…
I don’t dismiss it as you are right on the whole… but I think the story is more about the contrast in looking at war and in particular the holocaust and this situation in particular through the innocence of children.
i don’t think it’s manipulation per say.. I think it’s purely about the old adage that children aren’t born with hate but have it bred in them.
I don’t think your average viewer is naive enough to not see that there was atleast some level of karma on the father with the tragedy of his son dying.
To me I think it’s perfectly fine to be sad about the Bruno’s death… that’s just being a human being.
it certainly doesn't minimise what happened to all those Jewish people… I just think the viewer is smart enough to understand what was happening at that camp without having it sledgehammered at them.
Funnily enough we were talking about Taika in another thread… I think Jojo Rabbit is probably a more nuanced film with I think the same message.
obviously a different type of film… a comedy… but I think it had the same message…
