Those Qld players took the NSW money and did not refuse to play for NSW against Qld.
I think thats the misdirected issue in all of this.
And what about well before the 60's before NSW had poker machines?
Were Qld players lured to play for NSW before...and if so,why?
And how do you know that the attitude from the NSW side was arrogant and disrepectful?
And were the Qld players that were playing for NSW,arrogant and disrepectful towards their home state?
Who could blame players who were almost the equivalent of amateurs in the Brisbane Rugby League competition, heading to Sydney to become professional sportsmen. If you could put your hand-on-heart and say you wouldn't do just the same - to get paid to play a game you love - then you can probably accuse the Queensland players of the 60s, 70s and 80s of being hired guns.
The arrogance and disrespect is clearly demonstrated by NSW during this time being totally happy to continue routing Queensland by big scores, using Queensland players.
NSW had to be brought kicking and screaming into State of Origin because they were enjoying humiliating Queensland. It never occurred to NSW administration that a closer competition maybe better for the sport in Australia.
No ... they had the cash, they could poach players at will, and they could continue the embarrassment - and dominate the Australian team.
Clearly a demonstration of arrogance and disdain, which if had not been addressed by Senator Ron McAuliffe, would have resulted in the game of rugby league being a joke in everywhere except Sydney.
