Why Queensland have won eight straight

Those Qld players took the NSW money and did not refuse to play for NSW against Qld.

I think thats the misdirected issue in all of this.

And what about well before the 60's before NSW had poker machines?

Were Qld players lured to play for NSW before...and if so,why?

And how do you know that the attitude from the NSW side was arrogant and disrepectful?

And were the Qld players that were playing for NSW,arrogant and disrepectful towards their home state?

Who could blame players who were almost the equivalent of amateurs in the Brisbane Rugby League competition, heading to Sydney to become professional sportsmen. If you could put your hand-on-heart and say you wouldn't do just the same - to get paid to play a game you love - then you can probably accuse the Queensland players of the 60s, 70s and 80s of being hired guns.

The arrogance and disrespect is clearly demonstrated by NSW during this time being totally happy to continue routing Queensland by big scores, using Queensland players.

NSW had to be brought kicking and screaming into State of Origin because they were enjoying humiliating Queensland. It never occurred to NSW administration that a closer competition maybe better for the sport in Australia.

No ... they had the cash, they could poach players at will, and they could continue the embarrassment - and dominate the Australian team.

Clearly a demonstration of arrogance and disdain, which if had not been addressed by Senator Ron McAuliffe, would have resulted in the game of rugby league being a joke in everywhere except Sydney.

'Carry' was the wrong word, I apologise Daz. What I meant to say was 'lead', which Johns did as captain and Clive Churchill medalist.

Let's not get it twisted, Joey was surrounded by some quality players in his day - Buderus, Harragon, Kennedy etc. However, JT has been surrounded by quality players too and hasn't been able to produce the goods.

Obviously he doesn't have to achieve everything Joey did to become an immortal but winning that elusive second premiership would help his argument tremendously.

It won't matter too much in the end. The award doesn't exactly carry that much credibility and I'm sure JT will feature in the Hall of Fame in due time. However, I don't think he was as good as Joey.

Sure Pete ... Joey had some great moments in his career which have featured on the Channel Nine sports shows, complete with the anthemic music, and interviews with team mates and sports journalists, with more superlatives than a hospital has laxatives.

My point is that Andrew Johns was a great player, but the embellishment through the NSW-dominated Channel Nine media team is considerable. Much of Joey's weaknesses - in terms of his character flaws and periods of poor performance - is swept under the carpet.

A player should be remembered in terms of the full package and contribution to the game - but in the case of Johns the media continually have not shown him in this light.

Because Darren Lockyers terrible years of transition from fullback to 5/8 are constantly referenced aren't they

FMD Daz, you really expect the media to bash the great players of our game? What does that accomplish exactly?

Wake up

People like Dazzat do nothing to help the stereotype held by the rest of Australians...

It wouldn't matter how many Origin series the Maroons won, or if the NSW players served the Qld team breakfast in bed (excluding Greg Inglis) and then formed a guard of honour for the Qld team when they ran out on the field- people like him would still be carrying on with the belief that Qld were being hard done by, in some facet or another.

This projection of inferiority was noticeable in an article before Origin- it was the usual (predictable) war of words between Benny Elias and Chris Close. Although something Choppy said stood out to me (and no doubt plenty of other Blues fans who read it). Paraphrasing, Choppy said something like "You wait, NSW will win a series and go back to thinking we're a bunch of shit kickers".

Interesting thing is, nobody in NSW ever suggested Qld were shit kickers to begin with....

Knightmare ... yes ... it must be purely my imagination that the rugby league media is NSW centric. How conspiracy theorist of me.

In terms of Andrew Johns, I was suggesting not so much his playing exploits have been swept under the carpet, but more his personal weaknesses.

Imagine if Darren Lockyer had confessed to being a drug taker, been a serial referee abuser and been evicted from a Queensland camp for a racist slur. Not sure if he would have received an invitation from Channel 9 to be a commentator.

But oh Andy Pandy ... all is forgiven. What drug taking? What referee abuse? What racism?

At the time of these events occurring Johns got hammered by the media. Regarding the drugs he had a tell-all interview in front of two countries. I'd hardly call that sweeping his misdeeds under the rug.

But over time people get over these things. If no one else gets hurt then I don't see why Johns should suffer forever for his mistakes. Wendell Sailor had his dramas but he has since been allowed to fashion a successful media career as well as jobs with the Dragons and Centrebet, all in NSW. Isn't he a Queenslander?

No he shouldn't suffer forever ... but neither should he be placed on a pedestal as an immortal (over many, many more worthy recipients who never abused refs, fellow team mates or drugs), and lorded as a spokesman for the code as a Channel Nine commentator.

Don't agree with Sailor's media career either.

You may not agree with Sailor's career but you claim Johns receives favourable NSW media treatment and yet Sailor, a Queenslander in a similar situation, has been given very similar treatment to Johns post-football.

Like I said, within reason (eg. killing someone obviously would have to be taken into account) people tend to move on from these things and I don't think a couple of mistakes should stop Johns having a media career post-football or receiving a football-related accolade such as being made an immortal (the criteria of which is based on on-field performance only, anyway).

I'm interested to know what is NSW centric about the adulation of woman basher Inglis? Or the "all is forgiven" wankfest over Kiwi $onny Bill who walked out on our game 5 years ago? Shane Webcke tested positive for a masking agent but I don't see people claiming he should be stripped of his accolades...

As somebody else here said (Jason Maher, from memory) you're only seeing what you choose to see. After all these years of following a winning Origin team, you're clutching at straws looking for reasons to keep on believing you're the underdogs, that NSW are "arrogant" or that you're being hard done by. The best you can do is some poor attempt at revisionist history trying to have us believe that Qld raised players before 1980 were Rugby League's equivalent of the stolen generation...

Everything I wrote there was factual. The most telling fact is that NSW had to be dragged kicking and screaming to play State of Origin.

The administration of the day was quite happen with the highly inequitable system thank you very much.

The least you could do Knightmare is acknowledge that it took a Queenslander to create what has become one of the best sporting competitions in the world. Won't hold my breath. I imagine instead, you'll compare my other writings as some comparison to the Holocaust.

Look at the crowds and TV figures for the Interstate series in its' last few years. NSW were hardly "perfectly happy" to carry on as they had been.

Fact is, Origin was introduced because Qld were sick of getting beaten, and fans in NSW had become apathetic about a series that was clearly lopsided. Hardly our fault that Sir Joh wouldn't allow pokies in Qld. And the fact that so many players from north of the Tweed were offered big contracts by the Sydney clubs should dispell this myth that Qlders were regarded as an inferior bunch of shit kickers by the fans, players or clubs in NSW. In one of the last few Interstate matches I believe they got 600 people to Leichardt Oval? Hardly NSW fans rubbing their hands together with glee.

The Origin concept was actually brought about by the VFL, then Rugby League's administrators adopted it btw...

Sure ... not blaming the NSW fans for not accepting State of Origin from the start, although they did take time to warm to the concept.

My point is that the Sydney-centric administration had to be brought kicking-and-screaming to the table, to accept State of Origin. Despite (as you say Knightmare), lack of interest, lack of finance and lack of anything around the interstate games as they were pre-Origin.

That Sydney-centric (damn anything north of border) attitude in the rugby league administration continued until the Super League wars when Arthurson and Quayle copped some back.

Ah yes ... the old days when you went to the pub and talked to each other rather than start at a poker machine screen. Thanks Sir Joh for holding out so long.

Answering the question

I think the biggest factor for the last 3 years at least has been

1. Mitchell Pearce

I think halves like Walace and Kimmorley should be shown some compassion since the forwards were being monstered. What's Piss' excuse?

2 major, and very simple reasons:

1. Once in a generation team from Queensland with a close to immortal quality spine. Have also been blessed with injuries during their reign in these key positions.

2. Inept, and often downright staggering selections by NSW selectors over the course of the 8 years. Major examples include dumping the obvious heir to Buderus in Farah after just 2 games, 15 different halves in just 8 series, the obliviousness and pig-headedness where Pearce is concerned, Merritt etc etc.

You mean Jamie Buhrer wasn't going to be a longterm origin player ?
