Discovered some back vintage treasures hanging out in a forgotten area of my downstairs storage that the previous manager must have squirelled away...currently drinking one, a 2006 Teusner Avatar...

There is some cracking stuff in there actually...something like 15-20 various 6 packs of wines, no idea who put them there as we have never kept stock in that area...but I'm happy enough. There is also stuff like an 04 Albert, some 02 Petaluma and Grosset Polish Hill rieslings, and some stuff I am yet to go through that looks to be Torbreck, Langmeil, Clonakilla, Shaw & Smith, Blue Pyrenees...looking forward to sorting through it actually!

This 06 Avatar is a stunner BTW...really complex, earthy and licoricy but it's still got all its primary fruit

Had a French night tonight...myself and my trainee went through a bottle of Hugel Gentil and a bottle of Domaine Bonnefond Cote Rotie. The Gentil is a Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurtztraminer and Pinot Blanc blend. Really delicious, fresh pear fruit and spice. The Bonnefond is (obviously) a shiraz viognier. Quite ripe but elegant, slightly savoury and medium bodied.

Might go to bed now, got a domestic OD game to go to in the AM

I do love Shaw & Smith, the M3 Chardonnay and the Shiraz are always stunning...but the 11 Sav Blanc is one of their less quality releases IMO.

Not their fault, it was a rubbish vintage and they did very very well to get the wine they got out of it. But I think some of the reviews (I saw someone give it 98 points ffs!!!) are way over the top

I agree. It was a tough year and I wasn't expecting much. Probably why I (and many others) rate it so highly...

Finally got around to drinking that Little Yering Pinot Noir, and can see why Mr Halliday carries on like a pork chop about it. Light with berry fruit flavours, with just the right amount of tannin on the palate in the finish. Bloody good drop.

I got yet another lesson in the way the two big chains talk up average products with good margin tonight (and my mob are just as guilty from time to time, which irritates me enough that I now put my own notes on a lot of wines). I had a bottles of Les Vins de Vienne Cotes du Rhone that I picked up a few months back from Dans. They gave it 92 points, it was 20 bucks or so and I needed to fill out a dozen so I took a punt.

Not worth it. It's a nice enough wine, don't get me wrong, but certainly nothing more than a mid 80 worthy quaffer and for 25 odd bucks full price you can do a whole hell of a lot better!

Got a bargain this arvo, liquorland has 30% when you buy 6 bottles or more. Picked up 5 x Petaluma Croser Vintage (Croser Vintage always produces IMO), 1 x Mumm vintage, 6 x Seppelt Sparkling Shiraz saved a bundle. TBH their list price is probably a bit higher than the cheap outlets (Dan Murphy's etc)

Mrs Johns will be happy, so in turn I'll be happy. Christmas all sorted.

Good effort mate, particularly if it gets you onside with the other half!

Assured to.

I just hope the weather improves. We get a beach house at brunswick heads the same week every year, heading down tomorrow morning. This year we were a bit late booking so we had to settle for one a bit further from the beach & pub. Not all bad though, it has a pool. Beers/Cocktails in the pool while listening to the cricket. Just hoping the weather can do the right thing.
