Out of curiosity only I tried some of the Aldi Bordeaux. A mate picked up 2 bottles. I had minimal expectations, however I was surprised, bordering on shock. For a $10 bottle, outstanding. Not a world beater in any sense of the word, pleasant & easy to drink. Value for the price IMO. Anyone else had a crack ?

St Hallett Rosedale 2008 shiraz....holy shit, I wish id bought a dozen. Black as the night, mulberry and blackberry and chocolate and coffee. Ridiculous value! On to a De Bortoli GUlf Station Shiraz Viognier...

I'm new to this thing, but really enjoying it at the moment. Started work for a wine company lately, so had a good chance to sample some stuff of theirs and try to grow my 'appreciation' a little more.

A couple I've been making my way through lately:

Zeppelin Big Bertha - 2009 Barossa Valley Shiraz. Really good drop, exceptional price (about $17) and some fantastic flavour's in what is a smooth red.
Barwang Regional Shiraz - 2007 Tumbarumba Shiraz. Quite a strong flavour yet smooth and maintains a good taste whether with or without food.
Brand's Laira Blockers - 2010 Coonawarra Cab Sauv. Really good drop, fantastic to have with food though. Really opens it up.
Jacob's Creek Reserve - 2004 Shiraz. Quite good, very sedate though. Was nice but expected a little more.

A couple I'm looking forward to enjoying:

Last Horizon Pinot Noir - 2011
Brand's Laira Stentifords - 2008
Brand's Laira One Seven One - 2009
Jamelle's Syrah
Partisan Black Label Grenache

Mr Riggs Piebald Syrah 2010...pretty f**king good. Not a syrah, in fact I'd be shocked if it didn't still have a smattering of viognier, but still very nice.

Got a bottle of 2006 Torbreck The Factor for Christmas...very happy man.

For tonight...deciding between a 2008 Frederic Magnien Gevrey-Chambertin and a 2009 Paradise IV Chaumont...

Went with the Gevrey. High acid like most 2008 Burgundy, but very tasty. Loads of cherry and stalky tannins, leather and truffle. Bit young but very nice

Sweet tooth screaming at me again, as is my very thin wallet. So I picked up a bottle of Buller Malmsey. Growing on me, a lot of brandied raisin notes. Not bad for a $9 bottle.

Still prefer Tokay/Topaque though.

Gentlemen and ladies, your thoughts. My red wine for NYE 2012/NYD 2013 - Mitolo Serpico Cab Sauv, 2004. Reviews suggest this is either the youngest to drink or in the peak of its prime.

Should be drinking fine, I would think...probably the first couple of years of it's best drinking, which I prefer as opposed to the back end of the window....It was a pretty warm vintage in 2004 IIRC which should make it approachable earlier anyway

I have had that wine before, not sure of the year though. The night is a bit fogy, however I clearly remembering enjoying every single drop.

I am considering cracking a bottle the beautiful bride got me for my bday a few ears ago.

Eileen hardy Shiraz 2004. Really looking forward to it. I have never tried it, or any vintage of this wine.

Have a thoroughly enjoyable & safe New Years everyone. :alcho:

I concur with Baz, that is a cracker wine from a cracker vintage Johnsy.

And I've changed my mind for tomorrow. The Mitolo survives for another year, in its place a 2003 Knappstein Enterprise Cab Sauv.

Cheers boys.

It will be cracked. The only thing stopping me is if a few "friends" turn up early. Really want to enjoy it with Mrs Johns & her olds. However one mate is a notorious tight ass. Always brings cheap wines (which is fine) but then expects me to crack a bottle of the ones I am saving for a more appropriate occasion.

if I do I'll let you know.

I did get a bottle of Kendall Jackson Zinfadel, from a co-worker for xmas. Wasn't too sure what to expect as it's considered a dry red, however really nice wine. Raspberry, plum with subtle spices. I didn't consider it dry at all.
