For tomorrow, I'm considering a 1993 Penfolds 407 or a 2001 Bannockburn Serre....I also have a 2002 Pierre Gimmonet Special Club as the bubbles course.
The 03 Knappstein Enterprise Cab Sauv is excellent. To describe this as full-bodied would do it an injustice. Nose full of dark chocolate , leather + tobacco, a palate of ripe dark fruits with a good earthy undertone, and very fine tannins. Delicious.
I've got a feeling that this coming vintage is going to be pretty ordinary. 41oC in Tassie is a very bad sign for everyone, let alone the BBQ in the rest of the country. Might need to stick with WA + Hunter for this year.
I dunno...talking to several local winemakers who say that at this time of year heat is only an issue if you're unprepared and can't keep the vines well watered. They reckon 2013 is shaping up to be a very good vintage. Probably not an 09 or a 12, but plenty good enough.
Speaking of 09, having a 2009 Lerida Cullerin vineyard pinot this evening. Pretty much a textbook Canberra pinot, and a textbook 2009 pinot. Incredible perfume, depth and richness on the palate. Might be made by the most arrogant people in the local industry, but they have done very well
I never used to like pinot, but I find I'm slowly moving away from really big reds as I get older. I started out loving Barossa shiraz, big and heavy...I still do, of course, but I find as I get older and drink more wines I much prefer cooler climate wines with a bit more elegance. I find them more interesting, I guess. My favourite shiraz these days is Canberra or some of the Victorian stuff out of the Pyrenees or Grampians, for example.
Im finding a similar chain of progression, Coonawarra Cabernets are my favourite, but cool climate SA GSM's and Tassie Pinots are more and more my "go-to" reds.
Matua Valley, Sav Blanc, if you like white... NZ wine found in most shops.
Bunnamagoo, Merlot, if you like a good red... Mudgee wine found here and there.
2007 Wallaroo Canberra District Cabernet...I've probably talked about these guys before, great value wines and they often have back vintages for the same price as current release, as was the case with this. For me it's at perfect age now, will hold for 3 years or so...tannin all but absorbed, loads of black fruits and spice, a nice soft elegance. The sort of wine where the bottle is often half empty in half an hour (or maybe that's just me? :sarcasm: )
Company brought Matt Skinner to town for lunch today, he showed us some of his picks for our promos and had a good old chat. Seriously knows his stuff, there are some ripping wines on there....SC Pannell Pronto Bianco, Revino Prosecco, Riposte Pinot Noir and De Bortoli La Boheme Rose were particularly impressive.
Found a new cheapie...well, didn't "find" so much as paid attention to for the first time. Jacobs Creek 2012 riesling has got a lot of press lately, came on at $6.90 today. For that money, it's ridiculous.
It is one advantage of the current glut + last years average growing season in some areas, high quality fruit going into lesser bottles. Will have to grab a bottle for Saturday.
Yeah, I've never had the disdain some do for JC products...the Reserve range are good to excellent wines at times. I've just never bothered with the normal stuff. This tastes like a high teens riesling dollar wise though.
While my mates have a few beers and watch Watchmen after dinner + riesling, I'm into a 2010 Laughing Jack Greenock shiraz. Looking forward to this one, Shaun Kalleske is a handy maker, and I can smell it in the glass from across the room!
Well, I definitely want to see what this is like tomorrow....partly because it's still opening up, partly because it's legitimately too big to drink in one sitting  As it stands, black and beefy, loads of oak, dark fruits, any spice you can think of, and you could stand a spoon up in it. 9/10.
